Cynthia's POV

“Grandma,” this came out of my mouth in a slow whisper.

The clothes I had left behind were well-arranged in my wardrobe and embedded in leather, as if she knew I wouldn't return anytime soon and I might need them when I did.

I looked through my clothes. Then the realization dawned on me. I had lived well before I met Daniel—I threw myself away for Daniel.

My head turned around and I was willing to be just the best for him. Do whatever he wants and in return, be loved.

Thinking back, the gloominess in my heart started dissipating for some reason. He was absolutely not the best and it was a good thing I was no longer with him. Some relief was finally settling in my heart.

Then my eyes drifted off to some papers at the corner of my wardrobe.

I swiftly retrieved it.

It was clean and situated in a well-enclosed environment. Slowly, I brought it out.

Opening it, my heart was overwhelmed with shock. Grandma was just the best among any guardian I had ever had.

She left me some money, with a letter which read “Cnythia. I don't know how many years this might stay here, but I'm sure you'd come back here someday to a least look at your grandmother’s stuff or your stuff and go back down memory lane. Inside this envelope is your little inheritance I've left for you. You know as you go on in life, you'll realise that it can be very tough. But when that happens, just know that there's someone who adores you so much than you can imagine.”

I didn't know I had tears in my eyes until they dropped on the paper.

“Use this money however you like. I'll be rooting for you from anywhere I am baby. Grandma loves you now and always.”

By this time, my leg had gotten weak and I had fallen on the floor. Crashing in so many tears. As I held my chest, instead of pain, I felt appreciation. I felt the love. “Thank you Grandma I also love you so much. But I didn't come back to down in memory lane, I came back to live here, life is really tough as you said.” I whispered, my lips quivering.

I stood up from the ground, the note still in my hand, and I looked down at the money.

It was not so much, but enough to set up something for these residents.

My whole being thanked Grandma so much for leaving this behind for me.

I might have thrown away Daniel’d cheque but truly I had nothing to survive with.

In a split second, I removed the cover from my bed and began dusting it.

At first, when I got into this mansion, I wasn't planning to dust or clean anything. But right now I have some, swam into my soul, ready to live again.

First I would start working. When I was coming, I saw a cafe by the roadside. I'd start part-time there, study the environment, then think of what business to start with grandma’s money.

Just then, I felt a dull ache in my lower abdomen. I stopped midway, caressing my still flat tummy.

I was going to build a life for us. It might not be as big as Daniel’s but I'd surely build a happy environment for my baby.

I felt some ease resolved in my chest as I began cleaning.

A few minutes later, I was done cleaning.

But then something happened. Something that amazed my whole being—a phone fell from my shirt pocket when I bent to clean under my bed.

I was overwhelmed. But I lost my phone. It turned out my other phone was in my pocket. Either way, I still couldn't use it as I had Bnk nobody’s number on this one, except my other way. Who do I want to call anyways? Maybe Hailey.

I put the phone down on my bed and finally left to take a shower. How grandma’s home appliances were still working was something that amazed me to my bone.

I didn't have to struggle with water and the rest. But the first water that came out was very dirty and consisted of insects.

Grandma’s cold shower had spoiled leaving only the warm shower, which was to my advantage as the weather was obviously cold.

A few minutes later I was done bathing. I put on my pajamas and went downstairs.

I came out to the living room, everywhere sparkling now.

I felt great that I cleaned it. Grandma's mansion was great and bright enough for me and my baby yet to come.

Once I get a job and later start my own, we might be able to get ours soon.

I looked around, and I felt boredom sweep my soul immediately. Grandma had no television or whatsoever I made a note at the back of my mind to get one soon. The money was enough to get and I'd still have enough left.

I was feeling sleepy now and went into my room for the night.

But as soon as my back touched that bed, my eyes opened wide, sleep completely gone from my eyes as my chest tightened—recalling how I used to sleep happily in Daniel's house.

A few minutes later, I drifted off to sleep.

——————

I woke up to the alarm ringing wildly in my ears. I didn't know the alarm was even working anymore yesterday when I set it. But it turned out, it was still working perfectly fine.

I came down from my birthday, my mind calm and body, feeling well rested.

First I must apply, after I've gone to the grocery store.

My eyes almost welled up with tears, but I held them back with all my strength. I wasn't going to cry for Daniel anymore, it ended yesterday.

I sniffed it all in, working into the bathroom.

Once I was done bathing, I put on one of my clothes from the wardrobe, combed my hair, and was ready to go out.

*****

When I got to the cafe, I dropped my application with the boss.

She seemed very nice and I believed I might get the job.

Once, she said I could resume work tomorrow.

It wasn’t a big win, but I was very happy I got accepted.

After thanking her so much, I stood up to leave for the grocery store.

In a few minutes, I was done and returned home. To start preparing myself for my new part-time job.

Then I got lost in thought. How people’s lives could really change in just a blink of an eye.

Just a few days back, I was a design manager at a big prestigious company, but here I am today about to work a part-time job at a cafe.

This hit my chest hard, the tears I said I wouldn’t drop again started dripping down my face.

Just then my phone started ringing. My body jolted up with my eyes darting to where I had kept it earlier. Who could be calling me? No one had this phone number except one person.
