Chapter 2

Author: Canal
Only after the human stampede was over did a passing cleaner help me up.

I went to the emergency room alone and sat in the observation unit.

On the bed beside me, a young woman was gently saying to her sick boyfriend, "The water's cooled down. Take a sip, okay?"

My throat was painfully dry. With the hand that did not have an IV in it, I opened my phone and saw Jewel's messages: [Beau, where are you?]

[The schedule is clear. Parade at three, roller coaster at four.]

[How long are you going to keep delaying everything? Jason had to search all over for you and did not even get to watch the entire parade.]

A fever had once kept me from keeping up with her. Back then, she had said the same thing. "Resting isn't part of the schedule. Stop messing things up at the worst possible time."

I swallowed the bitterness and replied: [I'm at the hospital.]

After I closed the chat, I saw a new post on my social media feed. Jason had posted a photo of the two of them.

He and Jewel were wearing matching headbands and holding ice cream cones with bites taken out of them.

The caption said: [Someone says she doesn't eat sweets, but she still behaved and finished one with me.]

I did not like sweets either, but when I asked her to get some cotton candy with me, she flatly refused. "Standing in line is a waste of time. I don't do inefficient things."

Half an hour later, the observation unit's door opened.

Jewel and Jason walked in one after the other.

Jason's eyes were a little red as he rushed to my bed and literally threw himself on me. "Beau! Why are you in the hospital? You scared me to death!"

Half his body landed on my right arm, and blood immediately started backing up into the IV tube. I gasped and shoved him away on instinct.

Jason stumbled into Jewel, and she steadied him. Then, her face darkened. "Beau, what are you doing? Jason's here because he was worried about you. Why are you taking your temper out on him?"

I raised my left hand and showed her the back of it. "There's blood backing up into the tube now."

Jewel immediately stopped. She stared at the red section in the tube, and panic flashed through her eyes.

Jason immediately bit his lower lip, and tears welled in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Beau! This is my entire fault! I was so worried I didn't notice the IV! I'm so clumsy... You can hit me or yell at me! I won't complain!"

Jewel sighed and patted his back. "It's not your fault. Stop crying."

Jason pressed his lips together and said, "If you don't want to see me, I'll go."

He then turned and ran out of the observation unit.

Jewel watched him leave with a faint frown, but in the end, she did not follow him. She pressed the call button and had a nurse adjust the IV needle.

After the nurse left, Jewel pulled over a chair and sat beside me, sounding impatient. "Why didn't you tell me earlier that you were sick? If something was wrong, why couldn't you just say so? Why did you have to go this far just to get attention?"

I looked at the IV bag. "I told you, but you didn't take it seriously."

Jewel froze, then softened her tone. "I thought you'd be fine after taking the medicine. Not to mention today's schedule was quite packed, and every activity had a set time. I was only trying to keep us on track."

She reached out to touch my forehead. "It won't happen again."

I turned away from her hand.

Last month, I had literally curled up in bed due to extremely bad stomach cramps, but she had left me home alone because she had to go to Jason's welcome home dinner.

When she came back that night, she had said the same thing. It won't happen again.

My phone screen suddenly lit up.

It was a message from the bridal boutique. "Hello, Mr. Chauvin. The suit you ordered for your engagement has arrived. Would you be available to come in for a fitting this weekend?"

Jewel casually picked up my phone. She glanced at the screen and replied yes for me. Then, she said, "I'm not working overtime this weekend. I'll go with you to the fitting. We can make up for the anniversary we didn't finish today."

I took the phone back and stared at the message, finding everything so laughable.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" When Jewel noticed my silence, impatience crept into her voice. "You spent half a month choosing that suit. Now that it's here, what's with that face?"

I closed my eyes. "I'm tired."

She stopped talking, but she did not leave. Instead, she reached over and tucked my blanket in.

After Jewel left Southton, she never appeared again. Her apologies scattered into the wind at that street corner, and the sight of her bent figure disappeared from my life with them. Half a month later, her lawyer came to see me. "Ms. Jewel Rivers has transferred half of all her assets into your name. She said you deserve it. She can't put a price on eight years, so this is all she can offer as compensation." I signed the papers. "Tell her we're even." The lawyer put away the documents and took another case file from his bag. "Jewel brought in the firm's strongest team for Walter and Jason's case as well. Walter was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for home invasion, robbery, and assault. Jason was sentenced to seven years in prison as an accomplice and instigator." I nodded without speaking. Before leaving, the lawyer asked me, "Mr. Chauvin, aren't you going to ask how Mr. Rivers is doing now?" "She'll live," I said in an indifferent tone. The lawyer gave me a bitter

With every question I asked, the paler her face became. Jewel's lips moved, but she could not say a word. All the details she had thought could be brushed aside now came back to haunt her, transforming into living nightmares. Jewel swayed as she mumbled, "That's not what happened... I just thought you'd never leave me… I thought you understood my rules…" I smiled. "Yes, I did. I understand your refusal to turn back, your obsession with efficiency, and your cruelty. So… I learned." I tossed my empty coffee cup into the bin beside me. "When Walter crushed the recorder at the apartment, you said I could buy another one if something breaks, and I shouldn't drive away a living person over an object… "Now, that's also how I feel about you. A broken relationship should simply be thrown away." Jewel's face turned even paler. "Beau, don't say things you don't mean. I had someone restore the recorder." She hurriedly pulled a clear sealed bag from her pocket. Inside was the old re

Last month, I had forgotten to log out of my streaming account on the tablet. An IP address from a login on Broadband Avenue in Southton became the clue Jewel used to find me. Southton had a long rainy season… My mom and I had once lived there for a short time. I started a new job there. There were no schedules planned down to the minute and no pressure to stay perfect at every moment. My stomach cramps never returned either. Just as I walked past a coffee shop on the corner, I stopped and ordered a hot latte. Holding the paper cup, I felt the warmth spread across my palms. Then, the moment I turned around, I saw Jewel. She had lost a great deal of weight. Her usually perfect hair now clung messily to her temples. Her voice was terribly hoarse, trembling despite her desperate effort to hold it steady. "Beau." I took a sip of my latte and spoke calmly. "You're in my way." Jewel gulped as she said, "I've been looking for you for a whole month. You quit your job and bl

Some time later, a scream woke Jewel up from her sleep. She rubbed her aching temples and realized the scream had come from my room. She frowned. She had clearly warned Jason to sleep in the guest room and not touch any of my things. Jewel walked toward my bedroom. The door was partly open, and the lights inside were off. In the dark, the sound of tearing fabric mixed with men's rough panting carried clearly through the doorway. Walter was in my room with several burly men. "Beau, you ungrateful bastard! You turned your own father in and sent me to prison for years. Today, I'm going to kill you!" Jewel stopped dead. That was the father she had welcomed into the apartment earlier that day, the man she had urged me to forgive and make peace with. Jason screamed, filled with terror. "Let me go! I'm not Beau! Look at me!" A sharp slap rang out as Walter struck him hard across the face. "Quit the act! Jason gave me the spare key and told me you'd be home alone tonight. He's

Jason's questions toward Jewel landed on her one after another, and she froze. Why? The answer was so cruel that even she was shaken. Because I had always accommodated her. Because she knew that no matter how fast she walked, I would always chase after her from behind. In her pursuit of absolute efficiency, she had imposed her rule of "never turning back" on me alone. Because she felt secure, she had acted without restraint. Jason, however, was an outsider. She knew perfectly well that they were only friends, so she had never felt the need to enforce her strict rules on him. And because he was my best friend, she had casually given him a little extra consideration. Familiarity had bred contempt. Arrogance had clouded her judgment. She suddenly regretted not turning back that night, but she still straightened her back as she sat in her seat and looked toward the stage. "I didn't handle the boundaries between us properly and gave you the wrong idea. From now on, we shou

Jewel took out her phone, and the last message was still the warning she had sent me. However, there was no reply. She locked the screen in frustration. Just then, the arena erupted in deafening cheers. A countdown for the Kiss Cam appeared on the giant screens beside the stage. The camera swept quickly across the audience before stopping on the front row. Jewel and Jason's faces appeared clearly on the giant screen. The people around them immediately began chanting. "Kiss! Kiss!" Jason looked at the screen, his face red and his eyes shining with open anticipation. He turned toward Jewel, closed his eyes, and lowered his head slightly as he leaned closer. "Jewel..." His voice sounded shy. Jewel stared at their enlarged faces on the screen. At that moment, she suddenly remembered the apartment floor a few hours earlier. She remembered the look in my eyes as I knelt there, picking up the broken pieces of the recorder. There were no tears. No screaming. Only dead silen
