Chapter 4

Author: Canal
The middle-aged man sitting on the couch stood up. He rubbed his hands together awkwardly and gave me a fawning smile as he said, "Beau, it's been a long time."

The moment I saw his face, I froze.

It was my father.

Or rather, it was the man who had beaten my mom to death with a belt and a metal rod during the mandatory waiting period for their divorce.

Jason sounded cheerful and proud as he said, "Surprise! I pulled a lot of strings before I found out your dad had been released from prison. He said he really missed you, so I brought him here."

Jason turned to Jewel. "Jewel, didn't I handle this perfectly?"

Jewel walked over and put an arm around my waist. "You really did put a lot of effort into this. Beau, we shouldn't pass down the older generation's grudges. He's your only family, after all."

I shook off Jewel's arm, trembling uncontrollably as I stared at the man. "Get out."

My father sighed, his eyes red. "Beau, I know what I did was wrong. I spent every day repenting all those years inside."

Jewel nodded beside him. "The dead can't be revived. We have to move forward. Haven't you always wanted a family? Now that your father is back, you should learn to let things go."

Jason nodded even harder. "Exactly. I'll decide for everyone today. You two should make peace as father and son!"

My father fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a voice recorder. "Beau, I really came here to apologize. Look, I even kept what your mom left behind."

My mind went blank. The voice recorder held the lullaby Mom used to hum when she put me to sleep. I had always kept that recorder locked in the safe at our apartment.

Only one person could have taken it.

I turned to Jewel. "You gave him what Mom left me?"

Jewel's face didn't change, and she didn't look guilty at all. "I returned it to its rightful owner. It can also help break the ice between you two."

Returned it to its rightful owner.

She had handed a victim's keepsake to her murderer.

I shook with rage and lunged at my father. "Give it back!"

My father clutched the recorder and refused to let go. "Beau, this is all I have left to remember your mom by! You can't be this heartless to your own father!"

During the struggle, he suddenly let go and shoved me hard at the same time. Then, a sharp crack sounded. The recorder fell to the floor, and my father stepped right on it.

The case shattered, and the pieces inside scattered across the floor.

My father quickly pulled his foot back, looking apologetic. "You… You were grabbing at it too hard. I didn't mean to break it."

I stared at the broken pieces on the floor, my mind completely blank. That was the last trace of Mom's voice she had left behind for me.

I dropped to my knees and picked up the shattered parts with trembling hands.

However, Jewel grabbed my arm and yanked me up. "Enough! Beau, haven't you embarrassed yourself enough? Broken things can be replaced. Are you really going to drive away a living person over an object?"

Jason wiped his tears beside us and bowed to my father. "Walter, I'm sorry. Beau isn't emotionally stable today. I apologize on his behalf. You should go home for now. I'll arrange another meeting another day."

My father sighed, shook his head, and left the apartment.

I collapsed onto the floor, and Jewel crouched beside me, her voice softening. "Alright, stop crying. I'll have someone fix it for you tomorrow."

But it was not something that could be fixed. The memory card inside had already been snapped in two. I gathered the fragments and staggered toward the door. "We're done, Jewel."

Jewel instinctively took a step toward me.

Jason suddenly called out to her. "Jewel! You promised you'd go to the concert with me. I already picked up the tickets. We planned this three months ago."

Jewel stopped.

I also walked out without looking back.

Later on, I bought a plane ticket to Southton. After packing my things, I took a cab straight to the airport.

My phone buzzed with a message from Jewel. [Rules are rules. I have to go to the concert with Jason today.]

[I'll make it up to you tomorrow.]

[Calm down for now. Don't joke about breaking up.]

I did not reply.

I checked the weather forecast for the south. Tomorrow was supposed to be clear and sunny.

At the very least, there would be no more rain soaking me through. There would be no one left who would never turn back for me.

I rested a hand over my stomach, and my breathing slowly steadied.

The plane soon passed through thick clouds.

After Jewel left Southton, she never appeared again. Her apologies scattered into the wind at that street corner, and the sight of her bent figure disappeared from my life with them. Half a month later, her lawyer came to see me. "Ms. Jewel Rivers has transferred half of all her assets into your name. She said you deserve it. She can't put a price on eight years, so this is all she can offer as compensation." I signed the papers. "Tell her we're even." The lawyer put away the documents and took another case file from his bag. "Jewel brought in the firm's strongest team for Walter and Jason's case as well. Walter was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for home invasion, robbery, and assault. Jason was sentenced to seven years in prison as an accomplice and instigator." I nodded without speaking. Before leaving, the lawyer asked me, "Mr. Chauvin, aren't you going to ask how Mr. Rivers is doing now?" "She'll live," I said in an indifferent tone. The lawyer gave me a bitter

With every question I asked, the paler her face became. Jewel's lips moved, but she could not say a word. All the details she had thought could be brushed aside now came back to haunt her, transforming into living nightmares. Jewel swayed as she mumbled, "That's not what happened... I just thought you'd never leave me… I thought you understood my rules…" I smiled. "Yes, I did. I understand your refusal to turn back, your obsession with efficiency, and your cruelty. So… I learned." I tossed my empty coffee cup into the bin beside me. "When Walter crushed the recorder at the apartment, you said I could buy another one if something breaks, and I shouldn't drive away a living person over an object… "Now, that's also how I feel about you. A broken relationship should simply be thrown away." Jewel's face turned even paler. "Beau, don't say things you don't mean. I had someone restore the recorder." She hurriedly pulled a clear sealed bag from her pocket. Inside was the old re

Last month, I had forgotten to log out of my streaming account on the tablet. An IP address from a login on Broadband Avenue in Southton became the clue Jewel used to find me. Southton had a long rainy season… My mom and I had once lived there for a short time. I started a new job there. There were no schedules planned down to the minute and no pressure to stay perfect at every moment. My stomach cramps never returned either. Just as I walked past a coffee shop on the corner, I stopped and ordered a hot latte. Holding the paper cup, I felt the warmth spread across my palms. Then, the moment I turned around, I saw Jewel. She had lost a great deal of weight. Her usually perfect hair now clung messily to her temples. Her voice was terribly hoarse, trembling despite her desperate effort to hold it steady. "Beau." I took a sip of my latte and spoke calmly. "You're in my way." Jewel gulped as she said, "I've been looking for you for a whole month. You quit your job and bl

Some time later, a scream woke Jewel up from her sleep. She rubbed her aching temples and realized the scream had come from my room. She frowned. She had clearly warned Jason to sleep in the guest room and not touch any of my things. Jewel walked toward my bedroom. The door was partly open, and the lights inside were off. In the dark, the sound of tearing fabric mixed with men's rough panting carried clearly through the doorway. Walter was in my room with several burly men. "Beau, you ungrateful bastard! You turned your own father in and sent me to prison for years. Today, I'm going to kill you!" Jewel stopped dead. That was the father she had welcomed into the apartment earlier that day, the man she had urged me to forgive and make peace with. Jason screamed, filled with terror. "Let me go! I'm not Beau! Look at me!" A sharp slap rang out as Walter struck him hard across the face. "Quit the act! Jason gave me the spare key and told me you'd be home alone tonight. He's

Jason's questions toward Jewel landed on her one after another, and she froze. Why? The answer was so cruel that even she was shaken. Because I had always accommodated her. Because she knew that no matter how fast she walked, I would always chase after her from behind. In her pursuit of absolute efficiency, she had imposed her rule of "never turning back" on me alone. Because she felt secure, she had acted without restraint. Jason, however, was an outsider. She knew perfectly well that they were only friends, so she had never felt the need to enforce her strict rules on him. And because he was my best friend, she had casually given him a little extra consideration. Familiarity had bred contempt. Arrogance had clouded her judgment. She suddenly regretted not turning back that night, but she still straightened her back as she sat in her seat and looked toward the stage. "I didn't handle the boundaries between us properly and gave you the wrong idea. From now on, we shou

Jewel took out her phone, and the last message was still the warning she had sent me. However, there was no reply. She locked the screen in frustration. Just then, the arena erupted in deafening cheers. A countdown for the Kiss Cam appeared on the giant screens beside the stage. The camera swept quickly across the audience before stopping on the front row. Jewel and Jason's faces appeared clearly on the giant screen. The people around them immediately began chanting. "Kiss! Kiss!" Jason looked at the screen, his face red and his eyes shining with open anticipation. He turned toward Jewel, closed his eyes, and lowered his head slightly as he leaned closer. "Jewel..." His voice sounded shy. Jewel stared at their enlarged faces on the screen. At that moment, she suddenly remembered the apartment floor a few hours earlier. She remembered the look in my eyes as I knelt there, picking up the broken pieces of the recorder. There were no tears. No screaming. Only dead silen
