Ava’s POV

“Scrub harder!” she yelled, and I had no choice but to obey.

I pressed the brush harder into the floor, though it made little difference. The head maid stood over me with her eyes sharp, judging me. My knuckles were red and starting to bleed, but she didn’t care. She sipped her steaming tea like a queen watching a servant perform.

Technically, that was exactly what I was.

“Missed a spot,” she snapped, then kicked the bucket at me. Cold water splashed across my legs as the metal edge struck my elbow and pain shot up my arm.

“Even a bastard should know how to clean… Oh wait, that’s what you are.” She cackled at her own joke, her laughter raspy and smug.

I said nothing. Speaking earned slaps. Eye contact earned worse. So I bit the inside of my cheek and kept scrubbing, ignoring the sting in my joints and the ache in my bones.

The scent of roast meat floated down the hallway. Full Moon Festival preparations were well underway. For most of the pack, it would be a night of music, feasting, and celebration. For me, it meant more work, more chances to be “accidentally” shoved, stepped on, or touched by drunk male wolves who thought I was fair game.

Footsteps echoed from down the hall.

“Miss Rhinehart,” the head maid said, straightening.

I didn’t have to look up to know who it was. I still did.

Ella. My half-sister.

Same father. Different mothers. Different worlds.

I stood and gave a small bow, just like I’d been taught, just like a servant.

“Oh hi, Ava,” she cooed sweetly, her eyes scanning me like I was filth. “What are you wearing to the festival tonight? Probably a pretty dress?” She tilted her head, smiling cruelly. “Oh, wait. You don’t have one, do you?”

Before I could move, she shoved me hard. I hit the floor with a dull thud, my hip catching on the bucket, pain shooting through my side.

Her heel dug into my hand as she stepped over me.

“You’ll be scrubbing while the rest of us dance. Try not to cry too much. It makes the floor slippery.”

I didn’t cry.

Not when I was scrubbing. Not when Beta Joshua, my father in name only, walked by without glancing my way. Not when the warriors used me for target practice during training. Not even when Ella twisted my wrist last week for spilling tea on her expensive skirt.

I only cried when I was alone. But even that had stopped.

My room, if you could call it that, was a supply closet with a cot shoved into the corner. I curled up on it, watching as the last streaks of sunlight filtered through a crack in the wooden wall.

The festival will start soon. Music, dancing, and food. Maybe they’d toss me scraps. Maybe not.

I turned over and stared at the ceiling. Mould crept in from the corners. The wood was cracked and rotting. My claw marks were still there, scratched into the wall from the nights I was lashed and left alone, hoping someone would hear me.

No one ever did.

I used to think my mother would’ve saved me if she were still alive. She would’ve taken me away, somewhere quiet, where no one called me "bastard" or looked at me like dirt. But she was dead. And I was the mistake she left behind.

Being an omega didn’t help either. It made everything worse.

“You’re too weak,” Joshua had said flatly the one time I asked why I wasn’t allowed to train with the others. There had been no anger in his voice, there had been no emotion at all.

I curled tighter on the cot. Outside, I could hear distant music and laughter.

It was my birthday.

No one had said a word. Not that I expected it. But part of me still wanted to be noticed.

I should leave. Run far away. But where would I even go?

I’d asked myself that question too many times. Rogues roamed the woods. I had no allies, no money, no food.

Staying here was safer. It was cruel, but it was familiar. The devil I knew.

Maybe I’d find my mate. He’d take me away, love me, give me the life I deserved. That was all I had to hold onto.

So I told myself I’d stay. Like always.

I drifted into an exhausted sleep. Music sounded loudly beyond the walls but just when the noise faded into my dreams, the door slammed open.

Sarah’s voice filled the air. “Lazy girl! Get up. The Alpha Hall needs cleaning after dinner. And wear something that doesn’t stink like a wet dog.”

She threw a gown at me, stained, and reeking of sweat.

I stood slowly. My legs were trembling. Hunger? Fear? Both.

The cracked mirror on the wall showed a version of me I barely recognised, tangled black hair, hollow cheeks, fading bruises on my jaw and collarbone. But the eyes stopped me.

Golden but dull.

My mother’s eyes. The ones they all hated.

I left the closet in silence and made my way to the Alpha Hall. It was dimly lit, mostly empty. I stepped inside with the bucket and cleaning supplies, hearing the faint echo of the guests ' laughter passing by.

Then I felt it.

A hand on my wrist, gripping it tightly.

I gasped and twisted, but the grip held firm. “Let go of me! Leave me alone!”

I was yanked behind a tall pillar, then shoved into a corner. My back hit the wall with a hard force. A shadow loomed in front of me and my heart raced in fear as his face came closer to mine and his reeking breath hit my nose.

“I’ve been waiting for you, sugar,” he said, voice dark and filled with lust.

Light from a gap in the curtains hit his face and my stomach dropped.

One of the warriors. The one who always stared too long, who made lewd comments when no one was listening. He had tried to make a move on me and professed love so many times but I refused him.

But something was wrong this time…

“Did you miss me?” he smirked.

Ava’s POV“Work?” I raised my eyebrows. It was a Friday night and according to the timetable I was rather familiar with, Lukan was meant to have closed a couple of hours ago.“I’ve got a meeting with a few Alphas and their delegation coming from another region in a couple of hours,” Lukan replied, checking his watch. I couldn’t wrap my head around how he managed to handle everything all at once without putting his health in jeopardy and crashing out. He worked harder than anyone I knew and it got scary at some point because he never took a break. “Can I ask you a question?” I asked.“Sure, you can.” He said. “You work harder than anyone else in the office,” I began. “If you barely have enough time to sleep and unwind, how do you take care of your health?” “You’re worried about me, is that it?” Lukan smiled. “If you’re not taking care of yourself, someone has to do it for you,” I replied, feeling emboldened all of a sudden. “I’ve got the best doctors money can buy, Ava. If there

Ava’s POV“Seeing as you were so adamant about wearing the dress, did it give you the desired result that you desperately wanted?” Lukan asked, trying to sound as neutral as possible. “Are you asking if it made them notice me a lot before the previous times?” I tossed my eyebrows. “Yes, that’s exactly why I asked,” Lukan confirmed. “I need to know the latest details.”"I don't know, Lukan. But I took Renee’s advice and I apologized to Jake in the office today and after talking for a while, he offered to take me out on another date, a proper one this time around.”“Jake said that himself?” Lukan raised his eyebrows. “He did, much to my surprise. And I was caught off guard.” I confirmed. “I have to admit that I was caught off guard as well,” Lukan said. “I hope you won’t be mad about what I’m about to say next, but—““But you accepted the offer and you’re going on a date with the Wayland brothers before they leave tomorrow evening.” Lukan said. I opened my mouth and snapped it shu

Ava’s POV“About?” Lukan asked as he pulled out a bottle of water from the fridge before shutting it. “Last night,” I replied. “Is there anything to talk about, Ava?” Lukan asked again. “I mean, you made your decision out loud to leave me hanging and I understood it without any complaints.”“You don’t need to sound so cold towards me, Lukan.” I sighed. “I wanted to handle the situation in the best way I thought possible and you didn’t want to give me that freedom to do so.”“I was trying to help you but it was pretty obvious that you didn’t want my help.” He said. “The words you said suggested that I might go back to them,” I frowned. “Do you know how embarrassing that must have been for me?” “To be fair, if you hadn’t left like you did, we could’ve retraced our steps if it got to you so bad.” He said. “If we had been on the same page, we wouldn’t be fighting right now, would we?” I retorted.“You acted that way and you nearly made us lose our leverage, don’t you get it?” He said

Ava’s POVI walked out of the room feeling excited and extremely proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to tell Renee and Valerie about this news. A few weeks ago, aside from the fact that I absolutely hated all three of them, there was little to no difference between me and a piece of furniture but now, I was about to go on a proper date for the first time in a year and it was with the last people I had it with. Who would’ve thought this would ever happen? Well, it wasn’t anything romantic. It was a casual date amongst co-parents of the child I was carrying. I had been right after all, I only had to trust myself and watch everything fall into place just like I had predicted and maybe, I wouldn’t have to go back like the agreement stated. Even though we didn’t see eye to eye on everything at the moment, I would still have to tell them about the latest developments surrounding my decision. They deserved that at the very least and maybe building a relationship would be the first step to s

Ava’s POVI felt the blush creep up to my cheeks as Lukan said those words. He was always going to see me as his little sister and needed to be protected round the clock and purely out of embarrassment, I left the room before any of them could ask me to wait behind. They could hash out the final details of what they had left to say but I couldn’t sit in the room anymore before I sunk to the ground in embarrassment. I don’t know how long it was but the Wayland brothers came knocking on my door but I didn’t have the courage to open the door. They knocked for a couple of more minutes before they left and just when I felt I would have peace, my conscience wouldn’t let me rest. I had to treat them right before they left and having a last conversation wouldn’t hurt anyone. If anything, they had acted with class all through their stay here and it was only right if I did the same thing. Letting out a groan, I dragged myself out of bed and wrapped a robe around my night dress before I went

Ava’s POV“This isn’t what it looks like, Ava. We’re here because we all care about you and the baby as well.” Jake said. “There are other ways of showing how much you care, Jake. I’m sure you’re well aware of it and this isn’t part of it. I don’t like being ambushed.” I snapped. My hormones were going crazy right now and I was livid beyond words. “When was the last time you had proper rest, Ava?” Lukan began, after a couple of seconds of silence. I opened my mouth and snapped it shut. “I sleep every night, Lukan.” I cringed as soon as the words left my mouth. That was the lamest reply I could come up with and I knew that as soon as the words left my mouth. The four of them fixed their eyes on me, their faces mirroring one expression; disappointment. “Okay, fine. I don’t know because I’ve been forgetting things a lot these days but if I can just call Renee and ask her—““About that, you don’t need to. I spoke to her before I came here for dinner and I saw your calendar for the
