LOGINAva’s POV
It has been exactly one week since Ethan proposed to Ivana. The company had become unbearable for me, and I just had to resign. I had been looking for some other company that would not just retain my salary rate, but would also appreciate the value of my work. It would sound funny, but my success now was also going to be my revenge, and I didn't intend to take it lightly on Ethan, especially for how he ditched me. Going through my phone randomly, I came across an email that hid in the spam session. Strange. I had made myself available for top positions online once, and I'm getting to see this email now? “Glint,” I whispered the company’s name only for Mrs Cordelia to clear her throat from the entrance of my room. “May I come in?” She asked politely. “Of course,” I quickly put my phone aside to pay attention to her. She was carrying a medium-sized box, but from the look on her face, I could tell that she was unsure of the content. “I didn't place any order, though,” I furrowed my brows. “It's not from you, Ava. His was the parcel I went to get on the day my father died. Miss Ivana called not too long ago, and she said that it was for you.” I nodded for her to leave it on the vanity. “Did she tell you what is inside?” “No. She just said that I should make sure it gets to you.” “Alright, then. You may leave.” I glanced at the box with uncertainty. If the package was meant for me, why was I getting it now even though it has been more than a week since my dad's death. Also, why would Ivana care to send me a package if not because it could be the end of me. I quickly picked my phone up and went through the invitation from Glint. After my research, it turned out to be a nice and well renowned company, which always came after Ethan's company during the award of recognition event that is held annually. The email dated three days ago, so I could not possibly look desperate if I showed up at the company today. I quickly changed into a corporate gown, black heels to match, and tied my hair up to a bun. “You are most welcome, Miss Ava Scott,” the men at the security post bowed slightly. Stunned wasn't enough to describe how I felt. Perhaps, the Scott's legacy went before the faces of each Scott, but this… this felt a bit different. All the staff welcomed me as if my presence here wasn't new or as if they had been pre-informed that I was going to be coming today. “Please, Ma'am, you may take a seat,” the man in his late twenties spoke politely after whim I assumed to be his secretary walked me to his office. I shook my hand before I did and instructed that two cups of coffee should be brought. “It's really not necessary,” I tried to dismiss the offer, but he insisted. “So, you are welcome to one of the high ranked companies in New York and I'm pleased to announce to you that you just found a huge favour in the sight of the CEO,” he smiled. “I'm sorry, but are you not the CEO? I mean, you make it sound like you are two different persons,” I smiled with slight uneasiness. He leaned further into his chair with a blank smile. “Well, the outside world doesn't know this yet, but consider the evidence of how well you are welcomed into Glint. I am only a humble servant to the CEO himself. Nothing more.” With that, he offered to show me around when he saw how disappointed I was in hearing that he wasn't the CEO. Not that it mattered, but I just felt disappointed. I couldn't help but notice that the company had so much resemblance with that of my dad's, which made it even more difficult for me to forget about my father's betrayal. “Here,” he placed a large envelope into my hands. “It contains properly documented files of your allowances, your salary, and the benefits you'll be getting while working in the company. We hope you like what you see and you'll come back when you've made up your mind to join us officially.” “Don't you think you're forgetting something? Like an interview or something?” I couldn't hide the astonishment this time. “You brought your father's company for five years straight, Miss Ava Scott. Those years are proof of your competence,” he smiled. “Besides, this phase just began. Stay tuned for more.” I glanced from the envelope to him, with my jaw slightly ajar. Really, what was going on? He led me back to the office where I didn't spend so much time before I left the premises to go back home. ‘This phase just began. Stay tuned.’ The words kept ringing in my head until I got home. I tossed the envelope close to the box before deciding to take a shower, only for me to come back to see that I had missed several calls from Ethan. “We need to talk,” his text read, and although he has been an asshole since the past weeks, I still couldn't deny the urgency in his text. I scoffed. Perhaps, he had just realised what kind of devil Ivana could be, and it was too late because I wasn't going to welcome him back no matter how much he begged. I picked the envelope up to go through its contents, but an abrupt knock made its way to my door. “I'm sorry, Ava. Mr Ethan said he's here to see you.”Ethan’s POVI had drowned my fury and frustration in the shower last night before slumping on my bed, still, the impact of yesterday’s discovery still lingered at daybreak. I winced when I tried to stretch on my bed which was how memories from the club made its way back to my head. I managed to do the little I could, then got out of bed to see what sort of mess I looked like now.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, checking my face carefully for a bruise. There were just a few I could manage, so I left staring and went ahead to prepare for what I had to achieve today. There were two things that stood out perfectly from yesterday’s chaos—Layla no longer deserved the slightest interaction from me. Not just because she had helped Ivana, but because her persistence could grow into an obsession to have me by all means. She wouldn’t be different from Ivana when it happens.Secondly, I had to always keep an eye on Ava and do everything in my power to hinder Ivana’s attack from getting to her.
Ethan's POV Her words felt like a sharp dagger to my chest, and the more I tried to act fine, the more it cut deep. We made it back to the busy room where I gave her a fair amount of space. She kept drinking and dancing with random men… doing all sorts of things while sending unreadable glances at me. She had gone crazy.“You good, man? You've barely taken your eyes off her and she's… a mess,” the bartender pointed out, eyeing Layla.“Right,” I hissed, letting my gaze follow her swaying hips against the wasted man dancing with her. “We're good, though. Thanks.”I forced a smile then took the drink he poured out for me. I had barely gulped down the clear liquid before a scream erupted from her direction. The stranger had already pinned her to the counter not so far from where I sat and her struggle was futile against his grip.“Get your filthy hands off me!” She yelled. The people around her began to chatter. Soon enough, everyone began to make way for the lunatic. They took out thei
Ethan's POV “I do,” I searched her face for anything to give away what's going on in her mind, but failed miserably. She was really skilled at masking and worse, being innocent.“Great.”I waited for her to say something else, but she quickly changed the topic and that was it. We toasted to new beginnings and better endings, then with her remarkably persistent attitude, she made me laugh at some jokes. Finally, all the burden and high alertness melted into the present moment. We made our way to the club as planned and surprisingly, I wasn't as cautious as I was earlier. I let her take the lead and do whatever she wanted. It was all I could do for her anyway. “It's weird to say this, but you would be the one to drink a lot tonight if you don’t promise to stop being wary,” she teased, gesturing for two shots to be served.“Oh, really?” “Yeah, and I mean it.”“I think I should be sane enough to drive us back home because something tells me you're gonna be so wasted tonight.”It was h
Ethan's POV It's been two weeks since the pictures were destroyed and two days since James made his second biggest launch. Apparently, that was the day his reputation as well as Ava’s was supposed to crumble. It was also the two weeks since Layla acted impulsively and four days since I finally yielded to Richard's words. Everyone in my life had moved on except me. He could be right. It was time for that to change. The clicking sound of her heels against the marble floor announced her presence, before her soft voice did. “Hi, Ethan,” she waved, grinning as though my face were the sun. “How are you?” “Great!” She sang, holding up a folder. However, if it wasn't just a folder, she threw her arms open for a hug. Innocently reaching for the folder was my best shot at saving both of us the awkwardness, so I did. A small frown settled on her face, but quickly left when I stared down at the document in awe.“What did you do?”She giggled, deliberately taking steps in my direction.“Why n
Ava’s POVIt’s been a few days since that night, and also a few days that had all other workers giving me all sorts of looks like they had been there to witness how everything went. James hadn’t given so much attention to them and I decided to do just that. Nothing mattered except the immense happiness he made me feel and the fact that he felt the same.“Alright, Ava, I think it’s high time someone told you,” Cordelia lay her fork down to fully focus on me. “You’re not even scared anymore to deny what you feel for him. That is a cue to find out what is really going on with him,” she pressed further.I sighed. Her fear was understandable especially since she had really bonded that much with me. But I’d told her time and time again. James was nothing like Ethan and he wouldn’t hurt me the way Ethan did.“I think it's fine if we just move at his pace. There's no need for the rush, you see?” I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin in an attempt to appear as calm as possible. “A lot i
Ethan's POV Her line disconnected before I could say another word to her. Stealing one more glance in the direction where I saw Ava, I sighed and hit the accelerator. Thankfully, I brought the envelope with me so I drove directly to Layla's apartment.“Open up, Layla. It's Ethan.” I left a voice message while I was parked in my car.“Did you bring it?” Her voice was a hushed whisper when she ran towards me in the hallway “I did.”“Good. Please give it to her. I can't explain everything to you right now, but please—”“Relax, Layla. Let me handle this, okay?”I held her gaze long enough until she took a deep breath and nodded. I glanced at the door while stroking her arm lightly to reassure her before meeting her cousin.“Alright. Let's get going before she suspects something.”“Oh yeah,” I chuckled. “If you've looked this way the whole time, she must be thinking hell is about to break loose and who knows? You might be bringing the devil in with you,” I teased, making her grin.I smi
