“Have you taken note of everything?” the older woman asked after we had toured the whole mansion for more than thirty minutes. It was quite a rush, considering how huge this place was. “Yes, ma’am,” I replied. “Then I will leave the child entirely in your care. I am sorry, but I really can no longer handle her attitude,” she said. Her words felt like a warning to me. “Y-Yes, ma’am,” I simply answered. “Your job is to look after nothing but the child.... her meals, her studies, her playtime, what she should and should not do, and everything else. Just focus all your attention on Kai. Is that clear?” she instructed. “Yes, ma’am,” I replied, but slowly her words made me think. “Is Kai really the child’s name?” I asked. “Yes. Her full name is Kai Lancaster. She is Mr. Alexandro Lancaster’s only daughter. It will be easier if you just call him sir Alex,” she said. “I see. Then.... who is this Emily that sir Alex mentioned earlier?” I asked further. The older woman glanced around first, then leaned closer and whispered, “Emily was sir Alex’s late wife. It has been nine years now. She died on their anniversary.” My mouth fell open slightly as I nodded, listening to what she said. “Is that so? How sad for sir Alex and Kai. Maybe that is why the child acts this way, because there is no one properly guiding her?” I guessed. “That is exactly why it is your responsibility now... to watch over her, take care of her, and give her love,” she replied. Taking care of such a stubborn child was definitely going to be a challenge for me. “Go on, Isabel. Head to Kai’s room so she can eat and do her lessons.” I quickly said goodbye to Kai’s former nanny and made my way to the child’s room. Standing in front of her door, I knocked three times and slowly pushed it open. “Kai?” I called out as I peeked inside. But the moment I took my first step into the room, a bucket of white paint was suddenly dumped right over my head. I rushed back outside, trying to wipe myself clean with my hands. That child really has such a terrible attitude! I heard Kai burst into loud laughter from inside her room as she watched me covered from head to toe in paint. “Just barging in without knocking properly! This is what you get!” she teased me. I wanted to march right in and give her a piece of my mind, but then I heard her father’s voice.... sir Alexandro. “Kai Lancaster,” he called out in a firm, authoritative tone, making Kai freeze in fear. “What did you do?!” “I-I don’t like her—” “You have gone too far with your behavior.” Everything fell silent, and I glanced at the child who had nothing more to say. She lowered her head in shame. “You are grounded. Do we understand each other?” “Y-Yes, Dad.” Kai went back inside her room and slammed the door shut. I wanted to follow her, feeling sorry for how she was being treated. I knew what she did was totally bad, but I think that there had to be a reason behind her attitude. “Isabel,” sir Alex called my name, and I looked up at him, feeling embarrassed. “Go clean yourself up and change your clothes. We will talk after that.” “Y-Yes, sir,” I answered before walking away. *** I HEADED to sir Alex’s office on the first floor after I had showered, changed, and fixed myself up properly. After knocking three times, I entered the room. “Good afternoon, sir,” I greeted him, but sir Alexandro just stared at me with a serious expression. “Sit down,” he said briefly, so I took a seat across from his desk. It felt so awkward when it was just the two of us. He looked so stern and serious! “I did not get to interview you earlier because I was..... I had too many things on my mind,” he began. I felt nervous. Did that mean I wasn’t fully hired yet? “So your name is Isabel Ramirez, and you are.... thirty years old?” he asked. “Yes, sir.” Sir Alex adjusted his position, resting his elbows on the desk and clasping his fingers together. “Where and when were you born?” he asked next. “In New Jersey, on October 10, 1996,” I replied. Sir Alex frowned deeply. “Where exactly in New Jersey?” I tried hard to recall what my mother had told me. “I-I can’t remember the exact place, sir. I am sorry. My mom said I lost my memory after getting into an accident while riding a bus,” I explained. “When and where did this accident happen?” he asked again. “I think I was twenty-six years old at the time. It happened around 2017.... about nine years ago now,” I answered. I noticed sir Alex swallow hard, his eyes blinking rapidly. He quickly turned his attention to his laptop for a moment before looking back at me. “Do you have any documents or proof regarding this accident?” he asked. “None, sir.” Sir Alex let out a deep breath, looking as if he was deep in thought. I grew more nervous, he looked like he was about to lose his composure any second. “Where are your parents now?” he asked once more. “At home, sir. Why do you ask? Is there a problem?” I questioned him back, since his questions seemed to go far beyond what was written in my resume. “N-Nothing. Anyway, you may leave now. Go and attend to Kai,” he simply said. I nodded slowly, still confused. “Very well, sir. Thank you,” I replied, standing up and walking toward the door. Just as I closed it behind me, the guard who had let me in earlier suddenly appeared. “Is Sir Alex inside?” he asked. “Yes, he is,” I said. He nodded, knocked three times, and stepped inside. Before he fully disappeared through the doorway, my eyes caught sight of the black folder he was carrying, filled with papers. One document was sticking out, and I clearly saw the name of what looked like a company. Lancaster Syndicate. I frowned. Syndicate? What kind of business does Sir Alex really run?ISABEL“Nanny Isabel!”Kai jumped to her feet the moment she saw me and ran straight over, wrapping her arms tight around my legs.“I thought.... you left me for good,” she said quietly.“I would never do that to you,” I promised, stroking her hair and patting her back gently.“It’s so good to have you back.”I looked up to see sir Alex standing at the top of the stairs, hands in his pockets, a soft, warm smile on his face.“Daddy! I’m going to be so happy for my birthday now! Nanny Isabel is home!” Kai beamed up at him.“Birthday?” I asked in surprise.“She turns eleven this coming Wednesday,” sir Alex answered. I nodded slowly.“Come on, Nanny Isabel! I have so many new toys in my room! You can even sleep there if you want!” Kai tugged eagerly at my hand. I followed her gladly, desperate to escape the weight of Sir Alex’s gaze.I FINISHED WASHING the plates from our snack. Kai had fallen asleep long before I did.“Thank you.”I nearly jumped out of my skin. Sir Alex was standing rig
ISABELI moved to greet other mourners, but my eyes kept drifting toward Mama and sir Alex. They were talking quietly. Mama wiping tears from her eyes, while sir Alex listened calmly and spoke gently to soothe her.I let out a long breath. It was better this way, I told myself; having Mama keep him company meant I wouldn’t feel so awkward standing near him.“Isabel.”I turned at the sound of my name.“Anthony! It’s been so long! How are you?” I smiled at my childhood friend.“I’m doing fine. What about you? I’ve missed you ever since you left our town. We haven’t had time to catch up.... and then this happened, losing your Papa.”My smile turned sad as I looked toward his open casket. I missed him terribly.“That’s why I had to leave and find work—to help pay for his treatment. I never thought that after just a few weeks away, he would be gone,” I told him softly. He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and patted my back.“It hurts so much, but maybe it’s for the best? He’s not sufferi
ALEXANDROI was busy checking the papers when suddenly, I got a call from my driver. I quickly grabbed my phone and answered it.“I’ve dropped her off safely, Boss. I’m heading back to the mansion now,” my driver reported over the phone.“Someone told me that my daughter was crying nonstop. Didn’t Isabel say goodbye?” I asked sharply.“It seems she didn’t, sir. She mentioned Kai was still asleep, so she didn’t bother waking her. I also noticed she brought all her bags with her.”I gritted my teeth, my fists clenching tight. I f*cking knew exactly what this meant... Isabel had no intention of ever coming back.“Understood,” I just said, hanging up. I gripped my phone hard and dragged a hand over my face, burning with anger.I didn’t want to chase after her.... but she left me no choice. She does not get to walk away from me like this!I stood up immediately and headed for the parking lot. When I got inside my car, I started the engine and drove straight toward her home.AN HOUR LATER,
ISABELI went down to the ground floor to see who had come in. I was right, it was sir Alex. He leaned against the armrest of the sofa, his skin flushed and his whole body glistening with sweat.“Good evening, sir Alex. K-Kai has been looking for you since—” I cut myself short when he turned to look at me. I grew flustered, realizing right away that he had been drinking. Then I noticed it.... a faint smudge of red lipstick on his collar. My mind wandered, I could guess exactly where he had come from.“I’ll go get you some water,” I said, turning to leave.“D-Don’t bother,” he mumbled, making me stop in my tracks. When I looked back, he was staring straight into my eyes.I swallowed hard.“Alright, sir,” I answered softly.“Alright?” he repeated, his tone sharp with irritation. “Is that all you can say? Just ‘alright’?”Fear and confusion tangled in my chest. Had I said something wrong?“Pardon, sir? I don’t understand what you mean—”“How can you not understand? After all these years?
ALEXANDROI was about to head out to check the unloaded shipment when my phone suddenly rang. Glancing at the screen, I saw Karylle’s name and number."Hi," I answered when I picked up."Привет, малыш. Как ты? Я так сильно по тебе скучала!"(Transliteration: Privet, malysh. Kak ty? Ya tak sil'no po tebe skuchala!)(Meaning: Hey, baby. How are you? I've missed you so much!)I took a deep breath and didn’t dwell on what my fiancée said.Yes, Karylle is my fiancée. I decided to marry her because I was so lonely, and I wanted to give my daughter a new mother. But Kai doesn’t like her."You’ve been gone for over a month, and this is the first time you’re calling just to say you miss me?" I asked dryly. Karylle laughed, as if I was just joking."Baby, are you mad at me? You know how busy I am with the underground business. You can come visit me here if you want—""We’ll talk when you come home. I’m swamped right now," I cut her off."But baby—" she tried to explain, but I’d already ended th
ISABELI stared blankly ahead, my mind tangled with worries about how to ask sir Alex for such a huge sum of money. Every possible scenario played through my head, heavier than the last.“Nanny Isabel, why do you look so sad?” Kai asked suddenly. I only then noticed both father and daughter watching me.Flustered, I looked down and forced a smile. “I-It’s nothing,” I replied quietly."Are you sure? Because you look—""T-This is nothing, really..." I answered her quickly, trying to giver her a bitter smile “Are you certain?” sir Alex pressed. Although I wanted to ask him right now, but I just nodded slowly in answer. He kept his gaze fixed on me, intense and unreadable, until I finally turned away and walked off.I can't!I don't even know if he'll help me.The pressure felt heavier than ever.I SPENT MINUTES pacing and thinking of what to say. I walked back in forth in the kitchen, until I spotted him walking out of the mansion. I hurried to catch up.“S-Sir Alex,” I called out his n
