MasukKaia POV
I’m in my bathroom, doing my skincare routine. I'm putting everything in motion tomorrow. It’s time. The sooner I can get this done, the better. Then I can go back to Blackstone and be free of the suffocating presence or lack thereof in my life. I always thought Sinclair and I had similar but different lives. We both want to be wanted. We both had shit father’s growing up. We both want to belong. It’s the same circumstances but different forms. She was bounced from foster home to foster home and ultimately landing in a shit environment with her last foster family. Chad, Candy and the fucking dad, Conrad. They never treated her right. She was always the outcast. Then in my life, being given gift after gift, but no time with my own father. I rarely saw him growing up. The only time I could get his attention was if I did something bad. So, I would get in trouble…a lot. I did it on purpose so my dad would come and stay with me for a while. My mom died when I was young, but she wasn’t present when she was alive either. All I had left was my dad, and he barely tolerated me. Most days, I was left alone with no one to hang out with and no one to care about me. By the time I turned eighteen, he arranged for me to get married to my husband. I thought, maybe this could work. Maybe if he got to know me, he would like me and want me. But no. Another disappointment. He never wanted me. Not once. Instead, he rarely comes home. Only when I ask him to come and wait for a repairman or something while I went on a job, would he come. He would only come under this roof if I wasn’t under this roof. So, tomorrow, I will ask him to come and wait for the cable repairman. Then I will sneak in and do my thing. My phone starts ringing. It’s Sinclair. “Hey girlie. So, how is mated life?” I teased. “I wouldn’t know. You are his mate. Not me.” She said. “What?” I said. Even I hear the shock in my voice. I was certain it would be Sinclair. Why would he get paired with me? He doesn’t even like me. “Just as you heard. We saw each other and nothing. I am not his mate. You are, Kaia.” She repeated. “I may not be his mate either.” I said, still in denial. “Really? Thalia told me he even went into our room. By the way, your unique scent for him is coconut and jasmine.” She said flatly. I shake my head, willing myself to snap out of it. “Are you okay? I thought for sure you wanted to be mated to him.” “Kaia, I have told you over and over again, even before we turned, he was always looking at you. Not in a normal way. Like a man should look at a woman. He is interested. I’m sure of it.” She said. “That’s why I didn’t want it to be me. He didn’t look at me the way he looked at you.” “So, what do I do?” I said. My head is spinning. How could it be me? “Why not call him. Text him. Something. He was not happy that you weren’t going to be around for a few months. He asked me why and I told him it wasn’t my story to tell.” “I appreciate that. I don’t want to tell him anything about my current situation.” I said. I hear her sigh, “You know you can’t keep him in the dark forever, right? He’s your mate. He is going to find out. Besides, he already knows you are married. He will have questions. Better to come clean and see where things go.” Sinclair said. “Also, remember, you wanted to turn so you could have a mate. You have one now. Don’t screw it up.” “You’re right. I know you’re right. I did want a mate, and I do want a mate. I just didn’t think it would be this soon and Isaiah of all people. I know you say he looks at me, but he calls me a pain in the ass, Sinny.” “First, don’t call me Sinny. That’s a hard line.” She said with a chuckle. “Second, so what if you are a pain in his ass? Most women are a pain in their man’s ass, Kaia.” I laughed and the smiled as I said, “Okay, I promise I will reach out tonight.” “That’s my fierce friend. Let me know if you need me back there. I will drop everything and come help you.” She said. “Will do. By the way, did you find out who put those trackers in your car?” “Not yet. But I have the scrambler in and now that I’m back here, I am going to search for the car again for additional trackers. I will trace it back to the origin point and deal with it.” She said. “Okay. Good night, girlie.” “Night and good luck.” We hang up and then I go through my contacts and find Isaiah’s name. Actually, his name in my phone is ‘Stickler’ since he is so uptight. [Kaia: So…we’re mates. Now what?] I put my phone down and continued with my skincare routine. My phone buzzed and it’s Mr. Stickler. [Stickler: How about you tell me where you are, and I come find you and bring you back to the pack?] Ugh. Of course he would try that. [Kaia: No can do. I’m busy over here. I am finishing up loose ends.] Suddenly, the phone rang and it’s Stickler himself. “Hello.” I said, casually. “Kaia, what exactly is keeping you away for a few more months?” Isaiah asked. “Before you turned me, I believe it was your dad that informed you and Aiden that Sinclair and I would be leaving to get things done here. My situation is taking longer than Sinclair’s.” I said. “You said a whole lot and told me nothing. What is so important that you can’t come back?” He asked and I could hear the frustration in his voice. “Family business. I don’t want to bore you to death. Between you and me, I’m the fun one.” I said with a smirk. The phone is on speaker, and I am finishing this damn skincare routine that is taking three times longer than normal because of all these interruptions. “You’re idea of fun is causing trouble!” He said, exasperated. “There is no better kind of fun, Isaiah.” I said. I finally finished getting ready for bed. “Now that the stage is set here, tomorrow the fun begins and so does the countdown of when I get back. Wish me luck…mate.” I finished before hanging up. I go to my bed and lay down. I’m staring at the ceiling, and I don’t even realize there is a smirk on my face. That’s the first time a man, not related to me, has called me. Sure, the conversation frustrated him and it wasn’t all lovey dovey, but that was our first conversation…as mates. Something about it is giving me butterflies. I need to take care of this problem here and close this chapter. Then I can open a whole new one with Isaiah. Maybe it will be a better ending. Wouldn’t that be nice?Kaia POVYesterday was the funeral. Everyone was sad. It’s expected. It seemed split, though. It seems there was some sadness over Amber’s death, but most of it was over Adrian. We all know what he suffered during his time with Amber.Isaiah told me what he and Adrian talked about. It’s understandable why he was so heartbroken. He said some kind words about Amber, and as the funeral was ending, her aunt showed up.Apparently, Isaiah helped Adrian locate her. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but she was quiet. Later, she and Adrian went to talk. When they came back, she looked somber. Adrian must have told her everything, and she must feel bad about her niece’s actions. We put her in a room in the pack house until we can hear from Sinclair. Once she confirms his location, she will update us. It seems strange that it is taking this long, though. I would have thought she would have had information by early afternoon.I’m walking towards Isaiah’s office to see if he has heard from Sincl
Isaiah POVI’m talking to Aiden in my office when Kaia walks in. She is wearing black stretch pants and a black maternity dress shirt. She is ready for the funeral as well. She also has her phone in her hand."Guys, I updated Sinclair. She said she is closing in on Ronan. She needs predictive software. He's bouncing between three different locations, and she wants to understand the pattern.”Aiden answered before me. “Done. Tell her to get it, and I will reimburse the cost.”She sent the message, and within a minute, Sinclair responded. Kaia smiled at the message.“What did she say?” I asked.“She said that she will hopefully have something by tomorrow.”“That fast?” Aiden asked, surprised.“Once she figured out the best way to track that bastard, it became easy for her. We will get him.”From behind us, we heard Adrian. “Sinclair found him?”Kaia answered. “Almost. Hopefully by tomorrow.”“Then I’m not leaving until we know for sure,” he said determinedly.Aiden stood up. “Adrian, yo
Sinclair POVI’m in the woods, letting Mali run. We are feeling the air whip through our fur. I’m smiling. I feel carefree. I feel…content.I see a pond. It looks serene. Honeysuckle vines are climbing up trees, and bushes are everywhere, releasing a sweet smell. The pond looks like glass, and I can see the clouds reflected in the sky above it. It looks almost too perfect.I hear rustling behind one of the trees. Mali takes a defensive stance.‘What is it, Mali?’‘I don’t know. Something doesn’t feel right. This whole place doesn’t feel right.’The rustling continues, and in the distance, a man appears. He looks pained…hurt. I stay still. He comes towards me. But then, there is another person with him. A woman. She has a black ring around her neck. What the hell is this? They don’t seem to notice me. I don’t want them to notice me either.‘Mali, let’s go.’But Mali doesn’t move. She tilts her head, looking at the man and woman in the distance. She is very interested in the scene unfol
Isaiah POVWhen I got the text from Adrian, I knew something was terribly wrong. Kaia saw, rather felt, my anxiety.“What’s wrong?” she asked.“Adrian said the mate bond snapped with Amber and that her wolf was gone. Doctors and nurses were in her room, treating her.”She sucked in a breath. “She’s gone, isn’t she?”“I think so, but Adrian hasn’t confirmed. I told him to call Aiden.”“You should call Aiden. Adrian isn’t thinking straight.”She’s right, so I called Aiden.“Hey, bro. What’s up?”“Adrian needs us. Can you get to Ironclaw?”“What happened?” Aiden asked seriously.I told him about the text messages and what Kaia and I are thinking. He growled low. “Son of a bitch. I’m on my way. Is Sinclair still searching for Ronan?”“Yeah. She opted to stay behind to continue her search. We are going back next week to bring her back,” I replied.“Okay. I’ll call her and tell her I want daily status updates on Ronan. That bastard is going to pay.”“Damn right he is,” I said. “I’ll meet yo
Adrian POVI stood there, trying to understand what he just said. “What do you mean, gone? She was doing better. How is she now gone?”He took a deep breath and started explaining. “Her vitals went into cardiac distress and oxygen deprivation from one moment to the next. That’s usually an indicator of a blood clot. Ultimately, she suffered a cardiac arrest. We were trying to locate the clot in time, but we were too late. I’m so sorry for your loss, Alpha.”My world just stopped. She’s gone. Not gone like, moved away, and it’s for the best, gone. No. She is GONE. Dead. I will never see her again. Even if I didn’t want to see her again, there would never be an option for that to happen later.I feel the room around me spin. My legs are going weak. I haphazardly make out the doctor grabbing me and guiding me to a chair. My body feels dead inside. Thor is whimpering in my head.“I hate that I loved you.”Those were my last words to her. Oh, Goddess! That’s the last memory either of us had
Adrian POVI didn’t go back to the hospital after my last conversation with Amber. I just couldn’t keep pretending. I couldn’t keep sitting there and talking to her while my very soul felt like it was being crushed.I feel bad for being harsh with her, though. I don’t hate her, but I no longer love her either. I hate the things she did that led to all of this. It’s been two days since I last saw her, and I decided that today, I would apologize to her for my harsh words. I will tell her that I do not love her, but I don’t hate her either. I just don’t have the energy to care anymore. The rejection will need to be clean and swift. I am contemplating calling her aunt. She was the only person in her family who was nice to Amber. I can at least make the arrangements for her aunt to come get her and take her away to heal after the rejection.‘You’re kinder than most, just doing that for her,’ Thor said.‘It’s the only kindness I can give, Thor. Her cruelty far outshines mine.’‘Agreed.’I g
Kaia POV The bailiff calls for everyone to rise as Judge Michael comes, walks in and takes his seat. He calls out the case. “Your Honor. This is the divorce case for Black vs. Black.” He said and handed the folder to the judge. “Be seated.” Judge Michael said. “Mrs. Black, you are seeking a divor
Isaiah POV “He was offering you an apartment. I’m not jealous, I’m territorial. I don’t share what’s mine.” I said. Kaia looked at me with a raised eyebrow. “You could hear the conversation from there?” “I may have the position of a beta, Kaia; but I was born an Alpha. Alpha’s have better hearin
Isaiah POVFuck. Kaia is really responsive. I have a raging hard on, but I will take care of that later. Right now, what I really want is to feast on my mate and see her come undone again. She is fucking sexy when she comes. Her eyes roll to the back of her head and the way her back arches is like l
Isaiah POV She did all of this to make them pay. Well, she is a clever one. No one is going to see it coming. Part of me is proud as fuck of my mate for coming up with this plan. Then she said something I wasn’t expecting. “I need to stay a virgin until I get this divorced finalized. If I’m marked
