The light in the room flickered, a low hum coming from the small backup generator somewhere within the building. I wheeled myself into the cellar, glancing at the several stack of files in the room. An awful thought danced through my mind. ‘a single torch and this entire room would be set ablaze.’ A smile crept through my lips, I have always loved chaos.I wheeled myself towards the direction of the wooden desk fastened to the wall on my left. I pulled open the drawer, removing all the files in it. It was with great difficulty as my sitting position didn't allow me to maneuver much. I felt the false bottom of the drawer at last and I whisked it open before pulling the dusty file resting in there.
Just as I placed back everything the way I met it, my phone rang. I bulged my eyes before placing it on silent before wheeling myself out of the room and locking it. The small security device attached to the wall beeped and turned red, indicating that it was safely locked.
I wheeled myself as fast as I could, but a wheelchair wasn't necessarily designed to go fast and furious. However, I reached my room without any issues. “Hello,” I whispered as I picked up the call.
“Hailey, did you get it?” A strained voice answered from the otherside.
“Yes,” I replied, a smile dangling on my face. “It will soon be done, won't it?” I couldn't hide my eagerness.
“Very much so.” Throgan’s voice didn't sound as relieved as mine and I wondered what was happening.
“Are you alright? You sound scared. Isn't this going to fix it all?”
“Oh,” he forced a chuckle. “I am just stressed. I want to get this over with.”
I didn't reply and he hung up the phone anyways. Something churned within me and I knew something was wrong.
My entire life I have been an estranged child and I have had to live through being shunned and scorned. My family; the Andolopus family, has been the most powerful family for a while now, running chains of business across the entire country. My father was a stoic man with zero interest in weakness or affection.
Although most of the world didn't know that we were a rather old family, trailing from the sixteenth century. A family of werewolves that have been existing within the human world without actually letting ourselves known. Of course there are humans that know of our existence, but we try to keep that circle as small as possible.
When I was born, my father had expected me to be his chosen one, so it was to his shock when he realized that my bone was too brittle to support my own weight, and I was a female. The only reason I wasn't given a lethal injection was because among all his concubines my mother was one he loved very much, so he granted her the wish to keep me alive.
I grew up abandoned by most of my family, considering my mom died just three years after my birth, I was usually left alone to be attended by maids. When I came of age, there was also something vital that I lacked. And that was a wolf. When young wolves reach the age of thirteen, it is also called the age of turning. I didn't turn and that meant I was human.
It was a surprise because that situation was rare. Even though my mother was human, werewolf genes were superior to that of men, so a werewolf always gave birth to a werewolf, but here I was a human amongst wolves, literally. It worsened my situation and everything got worse. My life, however, changed when Throgan came into my life. An heir to a growing business whom I met at one of the few parties I was allowed to attend.
He was part of a small wolf family, and a natural alpha as people said. From the moment we met, we were pulled together and he gave me all those things that I lacked– attention, love, compliments. I sincerely would have just fallen for him if he just regarded me, but he gave me more and I felt all I could do was give him my all too.
Steps echoed from the corridor audibly in my ears. I had better hearing than most people so when a knock came on my door, I wasn't surprised. “Come in,” I smiled.
Throgan pushed open the door, glancing at him with an expressionless gaze. It wasn't the reaction I expected, but I will take it. “You look stressed,” I commented.
He offered a weak smile. “Where is it Hailey?” He demanded immediately.
I ran my eyes across his body. He was in a corporate suit and his tanned skin maintained the same sun kissed glow that swayed my heart. However I maintained a deep frown. “Where is what?” I demanded. “What's with the cold attitude?”
“There is no attitude, just get the files out, I need to have them with me,” he snapped his fingers, his face contorting out of irritation.
“Throgan?” I called softly. “You are scaring me, what's going on?”
Throgan shrugged and just walked past me, raising my pillow where the files lay gently. “You know,” he said as a matter of factly. “You are goddamn pathetic,” he smiled softly.
I shook my head, not recognizing the man standing in front of me, my heart was thumping faster than I thought it could. With my weak bones, I am afraid its oscillations will shatter my ribs, so I clutched my chest. “What is wrong with you?” My voice shook.
“Oh, goddamn it. Will you stop whimpering for a goddamn second?” He yelled and I flinched.
“What's going on, Throgan..?” He mimicked my voice making it sound more pathetic than it actually did, or maybe it sounded like that and I never noticed. “I can't believe that old Andolopus had a child as pathetic and useless as you. I mean sure, you are crippled, but you cannot be crippled of mind too,”
“Oh, she is, I can assure you, little girl is a cripple at the core of her very soul,” another voice said as a woman walked into my room.
“Baby,” Throgan said, grabbing her by the waist. “You don't need to waste your words on one such as her.”
I just sat there on my wheelchair watching the person who had given me solace, lock tongue with none other than my sister; Tracy. I watched as he traced his hand along her neck and she responded with a soft moan. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her tone getting thinner with every touch. Her breasts rose to the rhythm of their kiss and when he pushed her away, she bit her lip.
That was my sister, the one who had always taken time out of her busy schedule to bully the hell out of me. The one who always took every toy I wanted to play with. I didn't know when tears started to stream down my cheeks.
“Oh, don't worry Hailey,” Throgan released Hailey and strutted towards me. “I will still get married to you, and I will make sure you have a red wedding,” he smiled. “I didn't believe you would actually get the files for me. I mean how stupid can you be to think that I won't destroy your entire family if I was given the chance?”
“But… you said…” the words shook from my mouth. “You said… you loved me… that you wanted to be with me and …” I stopped, breaking into sobs. “You said this would give you an edge, just a little edge to get yourself a reputation…”
“Oh, you are so stupid, I can't even bring myself to pity you,” he shook his head, grabbing my chin firmly. “You just broke at least four companies from your father's grip, what you did today is to form a crack that will eventually break the Andolopus family!” he shook his head and walked away, with my sister giggling behind him.
If he had glanced back a bit before moving away, he would have noticed a wide smile that revealed even my gums..
My wheelchair rolled causing a creaking sound that echoed through an entire apartment. I laid on the ground, breathing heavily, my hand clutching my chest tightly. There was a high pitched frequency that kept on beeping in my ears as the room spun around me. I didn't know how long I laid there, I probably had fainted. I pushed the body on my lap away with great effort. I got up and stared at my bloody hands and the body that laid on the marbled floor. I didn't know what to do with myself at the moment, my thoughts were hazy and my body ached all over. I knelt down, tears running down my cheeks as I pushed the body of the man I once loved over to reveal his face. There were two bullet holes in his body, one was between his eyes and the other was on his chest. When I laid my eyes on him, I frowned. There was something wrong with his face, it seemed like his skin was skewered in a way. I placed my hand on his face and then touched his face and my frown deepened. His face seemed to be
I sat quietly in my room, tossing pictures of me and Throgan inside the fire. This wasn't the first time I have been fooled by a man and it won't be the last time. Most of the others didn't really hurt, but this one did. I actually did love Throgan. I loved his fire, his passion and his looks. I wanted him and I knew it deep down within me. It was hard to get any action if you were a cripple and it was even harder to love anyone. A salty tear dropped on the picture I was holding in my hand, it felt like I should at least keep this one. It was a picture we snapped with an older couple's mobile phone who thought we were taking pictures of them, but it was just a selfie of both of us. I looked silly in the picture and he was rather mischievous. I didn't even know he had it printed and I still remember my surprise when he brought it to me. I tossed it into the fire and I watched it all burn up. I turned away from the fire and then rolled myself to the table, a pack of cigarettes were
My attendant pushed me out of the house as gently as she could, however I still winced. She stopped for a while and glanced at me. “Mistress, you don't quite seem like yourself today, are you okay?” Her soft eyes searched for any hint of discomfort on my body. “I am fine Enid. I really am fine.” I forced a smile but deep down, I knew I wasn't. Yesterday's encounter was still taking its toll on me and worse was that, it was today the results of my actions yesterday will be exposed. Although it certainly put a smile on my face, I still clutched my heart. Enid wasn't really convinced but she didn't push any further. We entered the car and then headed towards the Andolopus Hardy headquarters. It was a tall obsidian monolith structure that stood apart from all others beside it. The entire building served as the heart of the multiple chain of networks that was owned by both my dad and his best friend; Mr Florentine Hardy. Although, they weren't just best friends. Mr Florentine was my fat
