When Emily read the text message from Ryan's lawyer, she put the phone back in her bag. It is time to put herself first. The old Emily would have suspended going to the hospital and rushed to see what was wrong with Ryan. “We are going to the hospital,” Emily said. “I am happy you decided to put yourself first,” Sophia responded. They stepped into the car and drove to the hospital.

Emily did her best to push aside what she felt in her stomach. She could no longer hold it the minute she stepped into the hospital reception because of the scent of germicide. She immediately had the urge to vomit, and she stopped moving immediately and stood still. Sophia understood instantly. “Thank God we are already at the hospital so that they can confirm what exactly is wrong with you,” Sophia said as she held Emily.

Emily walked off immediately and sat down on an empty chair because the feeling was getting intense and Sophia followed her. “Don't worry, I will be fine,” Emily said. “That is what you have been telling me since,” Sophia responded.

Sophia walked off and went to the reception to speak with a nurse about seeing a doctor. “My friend has been dizzy since yesterday and it is associated with an intense urge to vomit. The nurse was nodding as Sophia explained. “She hasn't fainted, has she?” She asked Sophia. *No, she hasn't,” Sophia responded. Emily walked off from her chair and went to meet Sophia at the reception. “Are you in pain?” The nurse asked Emily and she said no.

After she had entered her data into the system, she asked her to sit and wait for a doctor. As Sophia and Emily sat and waited for her name to be called, she was uneasy and it was noticeable. “Do you think it is something to be afraid of,” she asked. “We just have to be optimistic and hope for the best,” Sophia replied as she held Emily's hand.

“Emily Carter,” a nurse called out, after about ten minutes. “I am the one,” Emily said as she stood up and walked to her. “Follow me,” the nurse said with a smile. “Is it okay if my friend comes along with me?” Emily asked the nurse. “Why not?” She replied. So Sophia went along with Emily and the nurse to the doctor's office.

“When did you start having this urge to vomit?” the doctor asked as he examined her. “Just a couple of days ago,” Emily responded. “How frequently does it come?” The doctor asked again. “It happens in the morning and late at night but especially when I perceive food or peculiar smells,” she responded. “Do you feel dizzy sometimes?” The doctor asked as he wrote down everything Emily said. “I do. Almost every time,” she she replied. “Are you craving anything unusual?” He asked. “Not really, but I just noticed I no longer desire coffee,” she answered. “Okay, I will do a few tests,” the doctor said as he looked up. As soon as he said that, Emily got nervous. “What sort of tests do you want to do?” She asked. “There is nothing to be scared of. We just don't want to jump to conclusions without proper confirmation,” he said.

The nurse that called Emily's name in the reception, took a sample of her blood to run further tests. “When was the last time you saw your menstruation?” The doctor asked. As soon as Emily heard that question, she was still becauyshe had lost track of it. She has been  occupied with the investigation and everything that has been going on. “I have forgotten the exact time,” she answered. “After the test results are out, we will be certain what it is ,” he said as he observed her for a few minutes and told her to go home and wait for the test results because some of the results might take time. He didn't want them to wait at the reception.

As they made their way out of the hospital, Sophia gave Emily the side eye and said “What do you mean you can't remember when last you saw your period. “I can't remember. You know a lot has been on my mind.” Emily said. “I know,” Sophia replied.

Emily felt her phone buzzing and she reached for her bag to see who it was. She brought out the phone and saw that it was Ryan's lawyer. She pressed the mute button and put the phone back in her bag. “Are you not going to answer that?” Sophia asked. “I don't have the strength for that now,” she replied.

They got into the car and Sophie drove off to the apartment. When they got to the apartment, Emily tried not to think about what the results would say. She couldn't get her mind off the doctor's last question. When was the last time she saw her period? She sat and pondered. She lay on her bed counting sheep for time to pass by. But time went by so slowly. Eventually, she fell asleep.

She was woken up by the sound of her phone. It had buzzed for two minutes. The hospital called her, and they were ready with the results. Emily could feel her heart beat fast as she picked up the call.  “Hello good evening,” she said. “I would like to speak with Emily,” the nurse said. “This is Emily Carter speaking,” she said. “Your test results are ready, we would like to return to the hospital,” the nurse said. “Why do you need me to come back to the hospital? Can't you give me the result over the phone?” She said with a frown. “We normally discuss the results with our patients face to face,” the nurse responded. “I hope there is nothing wrong,” Emily said. The nurse hesitated and asked her to come to the hospital whenever she could and ended the call. Emily went to Sophia's room and shared details of her phone conversation with the nurse to Sophia. “They want me to come back to the hospital, not urgently but when it is convenient for me. From the way she sounded, it seemed like it was something serious.”
