A peircing femine howl rang through the market bringing all the villagers in my pack to a dead stop. I nearly dropped the dead rabbit I was bartering for to provide my family with dinner tonight. All eyes were fixed on the lady standing in the middle of the market square. Her red hair indicated that she was a red wolf and her modest coral colored dress that went to her mid-thigh with gold trimmings and a high collar indicated that she was a royal messanger. Once she was satisfied that she had everyone's attention she began.

"Here ye, Here Ye," she announced shrilly, "The royal palace will be hosting an official Wolf Games the victor will win the title of Luna, a marraige to our Alpha, Alpha Berion the Loyal, and all the privledges that come along it."

This time I did drop the rabbit. The vender selling me his hunt complained but I barely heard him. I was too transfixed by the red wolf and what she might say next.

"All eligible female wolves are encouraged to attend and enjoy the royal hospitality of the Fang Gibbous pack." Excited whispers filled the crowd, but the messanger was not done yet. She seemed to be staring right at me as she finished message with one last devastating condition.

"All female wolves of mixed color are required to attend on threat of death."

I immediately broke eye contact and lowered my eyes to the floor. Threat of death? I've never heard of an Alpha needing to threaten anything to get enough suitors to join the games before. Especially not Alpha Berion. Even as far away as my home, the Waxing Tail pack, I had heard tell of his reputation. He was strong and handsome, a black wolf I think, or maybe a dark brown. He was known for being brave and feircely loyal, but also dripping with charisma. He can't be struggling with getting attention from female wolves so it surprises me that he would host a Wolf Game at all to pick his Luna. And what of his fated mate? Did he have one and planned on seeing her on the side because he didn't think she would be a good Luna. Impossible they don't call him the Loyal for nothing. I left the rabbit forgotten on the tiled ground of the market square and rushed home to bring the news to my parents.

My father used to be a great wolf artisan so though our home lay a ways from the market it was charming and well built. I burst through the door in a frenzy.

"Calm yourself. What is it?" I heard my mother speak into my mind using pack speech. I heeded her command and shifted into my human form to deliver the news she had missed. She barely let me finish before she was coming up with a plan.

"The new Luna? and of a Gibbous pack no less. This could change our lives." She spared a glance out the window at my 10 year old brother in playing outside with the other pups. My other two brothers had been sent to war, a price my family had to pay for the treason commiteed by my father. If only that fool could have stuck to hunting and weaving his tapestries my whole family might be here right now, but if I could become a Luna I would have the power to bring my brothers home from the war and stop my littlest brother from ever being sent. I hated to imagine him out there on the border where pine forest meets the desert fighting tooth and nail with enemy coyotes where I could no longer ensure his safety like I had been doing ever since our older brothers were sent.

"You have to go, Elma," my mother insisted, "And do anything you have to do if it means you can bring my sons home."

"I know, mother." I bowed my head in sadness at the mention of my brothers.

"It doesn't matter that you would be giving up your chance at a fated mate. I trusted fate with my mate and all it brought me was pain and suffering. Pack leaders make their own fate and so must you if you want to become one of them. You may not be very strong or fierce or exceptionally wise, but you have been clever at times and you can look half decent when you want to. Best of all you don't stir up trouble like your father and you always do as you're told." my mother elaborated as she turned from the bone broth she was stirring over our stove to look at me sternly. It didn't sound like the makings of a Luna to me, but my mother new best.

"I will mother." I had alsways been the obedient daughter ever since my father tore our life into pieces with his betrayal. I wish I could ask him why he did it, but he ran like a coward and no wolf has seen him for six years. She may come off as insensetive and demanding at times, but I knew my mother was just doing the best she could with everything she had on her plate. It didn't matter what she said this time my fate had already been decided by another.

"There's one last part of this announcement you have to hear," I told my mother lifting my head and brushing my hair out of my face. My calico red, white, and black hair.

Before I could process what I was doing I had pushed him away so hard that my chair toppled over spilling me out onto the floor. The crash immediately brought all attention onto us and I could feel my face heating with embarrassment. I looked up at the offending wolf and saw blood trickling down his shoulders. My hands must have taken the form of razor sharp claws as I pushed him away in anger, easily tearing through his skin. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't stay here on the floor with everyone's eyes on me. A waitress held out her hand to me and I took it, rising to my feet. "Quick thinking, ma'am," she said looking at me with clever grey eyes, "He almost bit you.""Yes. Thank you," I said breathlessly. I think my heart might beat straight out of my chest. "She attacked me!" Boison exclaimed noticing the blood dripping down his arm and putting his hand over it to staunch the bleeding. "Relax," said another commanding voice. All heads swiveled over to the Vampire King, "It'

I almost wish I hadn't worn my new blue dress this afternoon because I can't possibly one up it at dinner. In lue of that I went with a long skin thight black dress I deemed both elegant and sexy. Dani wore blue. In fact, I've never seen her wear the cheerfull yellow that her name suggests. We walked together to the door of the mansion where a guard stood at attention to greet us. The wolves in waiting pulled open the heavy doors for us and the guard announced loudly,"From Cabin B, Elma and Dandilion!"A massive dining table had been brought out turning the throne room into a very fancy dining room. Dani and I were lead to our seats where I quickly scanned the other particapants at the table. The first thing I noticed was that I had the great misfortune of being sat directly next to the Alpha's second cousin. His place tag read the name Boison. I also noticed Oakly had not yet been sent home. Damn. Luckily Rayven and Jules were still in attendence along with another seven wolves who

"The dress looks perfect on you," the Alpha remarked, "I hope you don't mind me saying that I have amazing taste." I chuckled a little. "You are too generous, Alpha. You have spoiled me." "I'd like all my guests to feel that way." I frowned, I didn't want to talk about all those other wolves fighting for his affection. "Your grandparents. They were... charming. An intriguing bunch, they carry much wisdom.""Intriguing is the word for it alright. They'd be more charming if they stopped bickering all the time. If you can put up with them then you can put up with anything." "I imagine they all used to be very different wolves once.""You would be correct. Grandfather Walter used to be the Alpha once, he's the one who can't speak,"I nodded for him to continue. "His time was one of great unrest as I've heard it told. One day when he was out on a hunt with only a few of his closest warriors he was ambushed and surrounded by the enemy. He knew they would be able to fight them all off

Another grandparent type wolf stood at the door, her blank eyes a ghostly white. I stood up quickly, but the wolf across from me looked a little disappointed at the interruption. "We are ready for you now," she croaked."Thankyou ma'am," I said and left the room without another glance at the Alpha's treacherous second cousin. I followed my blind guide a couple more yards down the hall until we entered a slightly bigger office with a table in it not unlike a conference room. How the blind wolf knew this was the right place was beyond my understanding. The blind wolf and I took our seats at the table where three other old wolves sat already. These must be the all of the Alpha's grandparents. "Introduce yourself she-wolf," demanded the elder that had led Rayven inside earlier."My name is Elma," I stated shortly. Customarily a wolf would follow this with a family name or pack name, but I decided to keep mine short. A moment of silence."What did she say?" asked one of the wolves who in

I have a lot of respect for elderly wolves for their wisdom and experience, but damn, they are not fast. It feels like the first wolf who got called in for an interview with the Alpha's grandparents started hours ago but we are still only a couple wolves in with what must be twenty more to go. I sat on a bench kicking my feet and watching varius servants hurry by. I might rather be one of them right now because at least I would have something to do besides sit here in my growing pool of stress."They must have a lot to say in there." Rayven commented from beside me, "That's good because we'll each get our fair shot and won't be hurried out or anything.""What do you think they're talking about?" I asked absentmindedly. I hoped none of the first suitors chosen do so well that I am hardly given time of day."Probably the war? What else to elderly folks talk about? The war or other old wolves." "Shush, don't call them old. We're trying to make a good impression here." I shook my head di

The next two days passed in a blur as the she-wolves recovered from the first challenge. Notably we were down a few in number who hadn't fared well in the birthday party challenge and even one wolf who found her fated mate in a palace servant and they had reportedly ran away together. Good for them. I spent my days practicing, training, and trying to learn everything I could about pack politics and the Alpha I sought to impress. He had a charming personality and when he wasn't talking and checking in with all of people living on his grounds he liked song and dance. He kept his mother close along with the strange gentleman I had smashed into at the first challenge. I hoped I wouldn't have to spend much time with that unsavory character if I won the title of Luna. I had almost forgotten about the Alpha's previous promise until one day when I discovered a package laying on my bedspread. "Did you put this here?" I asked Dandilion. My roommate had been particularly dreamy and lost in her
