5.

Hugh’s pov.

“C'mon Adele looks like Alex. She has his brown eyes."

I had been arguing with my sister for the past 15 minutes, trying to convince her that Alex didn't have the power to change her baby's eye color, just so she'd look like him.

“No! I'm her mother. She should look more like me."

“Anita has your looks though.” I tried to console her.

“But it's not enough." She whined.

I was about to say something to her, when we heard a knock on the door.

I went to the open the door and I saw one of the Alpha's escorts.

“The Alpha would like to see you." He said Amy walked away.

I told my sister I would be back soon, and I walked to Alex's office.

I knocked on the door and went in. He was focused on whatever he was reading, I don't think he even noticed me walk in.

“Alex, you asked for me."

This seemed to snap him out of his trance, as he looked up sharply at me and then sighed.

“Yes, I did. Take a seat." He gestured to one of the chairs.

I took a seat across him and he continued.

“Sophia... Her father is dead."

I was shocked to hear that, and I did feel sorry for her. I was so confused as to what this, had to do with me. It seemed like Alex saw the confusion on my face.

“Her father was the Alpha of the White Wolf Pack. And before he died, he chose Sophia, over everyone else, to take over from him. This is my problem. She can't go on and do something like that. She'd die."

“Okay, where do I come in?"

“As my beta, since you have nothing better to do rather than talk to my wife and hug my babies for yourself all day, I'll be sending you to across the river, to her pack. "

“Are you serious? Why can't you go? You're the Alpha."

“I can't. You know my relationship with Sophia isn't the best right now. I doubt her people would want to see me at a time like this. Besides, I'm the Alpha, and I make the orders." He said with a finalizing tone.

I sighed and walked out of his office, I had no clue what Alex expected me to say or do there.

I just hoped I'll finish quickly and come back soon. I needed to find my mate.

After that day at the party, when I felt that way, I haven't felt it again.

I was so happy to realise that my mate was close to me, but then when I went to look for her, I trailed her scent, but It disappeared, just by the river.

But, I won't stop. I'll keep looking for her. I have to find her. I need her, by my side.

I spoke to my sister about it, and she was surprised to hear I had found my mate, but then when she heard that she disappeared almost immediately, she encouraged me, saying that I'll find her, one day.

The next day, very early in the morning, I found myself in Alex's office, so he could give me a detailed explanation, as to what my job there would entail.

“Sophia has decided to take over from her father as Alpha. Since the White Wolf Pack and the Blood Moon Pack are allies, it's our job to try to dissuade her from doing so. Well actually, your job."

“Why can't she be Alpha? I don't see what's wrong?" I honestly didn't.

“Are you mad? She's a woman. They'll kill her. Besides, she's not strong enough to handle this position. She could get hurt."

“There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. After she gets hurt, she'll recover from the pain and get over it. That's how people grow to become the strongest."

How could he say this?

“This is why Sophia hates you. You still meddle in her life and her affairs, like you love her. But you don't."

“I'm just trying to protect-" He started.

“A job, no one, asked you to do. It's obvious Sophia loved you. I know you care about her, but sometimes give it a rest. Let her do her own things. Even I can't tell my sister what to do. "

I grab my bag and walk away from the office, dropping by my sister's room. Knocking, I enter.

She's seated on the bed, with the twins in her hands. She's breastfeeding Adele and trying to change Anita's diaper.

As she looks up at me, I see the bags under her eyes. She looks so tired. All of a sudden, my young sister isn't looking her age anymore.

“Hey sis. What's wrong? "

“The twins didn't let me sleep all night. Constantly crying."

“Didn't Alex help you out?"

“He's busy with work. I can't ask that of him."

“Mira, before he's the Alpha, he's your husband. You need to remind him of that. He has to live up to his responsibilities. They're his children too."

“I'll be fine, Hugh.”

I was so mad I didn't know when I blurted out,

“Maybe if he focused on his own family as much as he needed to, he won't have time to meddle in other people's affairs and cause trouble."

My sister heard me and asked what I meant.

“Nothing sis. Well, I came to inform you that I'm leaving. Your husband, who seems to want to be the hero in every scenario, has sent me to Sophia."

I picked up my bag and bid my sister farewell.

I looked back at my sister. I couldn't just leave her like this so, I walked back and took Adele from her.

I put her to sleep and laid her in her cot. Mira did same for Anita.

“Now, please, get some sleep. You look like you're about to fall."

I tucked her into bed, and with a kiss of her forehead, I was out the door.

I decided to walk in my human for, hoping I'd find clues along the way, that would lead me to my mate.

Unfortunately, I had to change to my wolf form, to cross the river.

I did, and I walked further into the trees of Sophia's side of the river.

When I got closer to the village, I changed back and brought out some clothes.

Then, that tingling sensation came again. I couldn't believe it.

It meant my mate was close by. I was quite surprised she was from this pack, but that didn't matter.

I was so caught up in my excitement, I didn't notice the coastal guards, until I felt a gun at the back of my head.

“Drop your bag, and slowly turn around." I heard a voice say behind me.

I obeyed and when I turned around, I saw 4 other guards there, pointing guns at me too.

“Identify yourself!"

“Hugh Jacobs! Beta, Blood Moon Pack." I shouted.

They dropped their guns and moved away from me.

“I have business with your Alpha."

They let me go, not before showing me the way to her house.

I happily found my way there, happy that my mate, my love was close by.

The feeling kept getting stronger. I got to her house and knocked on the door. I turned around to watch some kids run past.

By the time I turned back, I saw two heads poking out of the door. It was two young boys.

“Okay...Good morning. I'm Beta Hugh, from the Blood Moon pack. I'm here to see Sophia."

They looked at each other and then looked back at me. One of them stretched his hands out.

“The troll fee. You need to pay the fee before you pass. Else, the big old hungry troll will eat you up! "

“Listen kids, I don't have time for-"

“Kids?! The troll fee just doubled!"

He stretched his hands further and I just handed him a hundred dollar bill.

He looked at it, and then stretched his hand back.

“Your fee was doubled. Remember?"

I placed another bill in his hands and immediately, the door was shut in my face.

It opened again, and this time, the both of them came out, holding the door ajar for me.

“You have been allowed to pass. Enter."

I just shook my head and and walked into the house. An older woman came down the stairs, and I couldn't have been happier to see an adult.

“Sam, Sunny, what did I say about letting strangers into the house?" She said looking at me.

One of the boys spoke up,

“You didn't say anything about not letting them in, if they gave us money."

They waved the hundred dollar bills I gave them and smiled widely at their mum. They looked like a handful.

She just shook her head and turned back to me.

“I'm Aunt Kathy. Who are you?"

“Hugh.... Hugh Jacob. Beta, Blood Moon Pack."

I stretched out my hand to shake her, but she didn't take it. She just looked at it, and looked back at me.

“Have a seat. Tea, coffee?"

“Uh, water. Just water would be fine, please."

She left me and went into the kitchen and the boys followed her.

I couldn't believe I was sitting in the house of the former largest wolf in all 5 packs.

Everyone knew him and feared him.

Aunt Kathy came back with my water and she placed it on the table and sat on the chair away from me.

I took a sip of water and placed the glass, back on the table.

“So, what's your business here...in my home?"

“I was sent, by my Alpha. He sends his deepest condolences to your family, for your loss. He-"

“My loss? That loss would never have happened of he hadn't taken Sophia away from us! It's all his fault! I don't know what you have come out do here. But, just hope that Sophia is in a good mood when she returns, else, it's going to be hell for you."

She walked away, with my water. I was so shocked at how much she hated Alex. Well, I couldn't blame her. Even I am mad at him.

A few moments later, those clowns, I mean the kids came out and stood right in front of me.

“Mum says you're a guest and to show you to your room."

I picked up my bag and followed them. I dropped my bag beside the bed and laid down. I was honestly tired and I just wanted to sleep.

I hoped that Sophia would be in a good mood. I needed to resolve this issue, so I could leave and go looking for my mate.

I eventually fell asleep and was awoken by a knock.

One of the boys came in.

“Sunny, what do you want?"

He laughed.

“I'm Sam. Sunny's the other one. I came to tell you that Sophia's back."

Hearing this, I stood immediately and followed him downstairs.

Her back was turned to me and she was talking to someone.

As soon as she turned to face me, I had my confirmation. I felt that sensation again, and this time it was stronger.

Sophia was my mate. I didn't know if I should be happy or not.

On one hand, I was happy I finally found my mate, but on the other I wasn't because she hated me.

When she looked at me, she realized it too and the look of shock quickly turned to a scowl. A very deep scowl.

I was too scared to whisper the words, 'mate', for the fear of her.

But it seemed like they caught on to what was going on, because the look on Aunt Kathy's face said it all.

“You... Who are you?" Sophia asked pointing at me.

“H-Hugh...Hugh Jacob." I swallowed hardly, and realized my palms were sweaty.

She looked at Aunt Kathy and she just took a deep breath, holding her temple.

“What are you doing here? You're in-." She stopped talking.

She walked closer to me and it took every will in me not to move back. I don't know how she could be so intimidating.

“You're from Alex, aren't you?"

I was so surprised as to how she knew. She saw the look ok my face and move away from me.

“Don't be so surprised. I smell him all over you, it's sickening."

She went to rest on the table, turning her back to me..

“I don't know why he sent you here. I don't even want to know, but I want you out of my house, by morning."

As soon as she said this, she walked away and Aunt Kathy ran after her. I was so dumb founded.

Sophia was mate. My mate is an Alpha.

Which meant I was supposed to support her.

But then I was here on an assignment, to stop her from doing what she wanted to do.

But then, she hated me. Maybe even more than she hated Alex.

This was going to be a rough ride.
