The building looked similar to ours , the difference were the toys found on the lawn next to the front porch and the dog sleeping beside the front door. Father never let us adopt a pet, he  always told us that they constituted as nuisance, I always wanted a cat , a small pet to love , on our 1st year anniversary, Brian, my boyfriend then ,got one for me, father wouldn’t just give in. He later had to return it .

I walked anxiously towards the door, the dog lifted its head , barked and laid down back. I made a sigh of relief as I knocked .

No answer. I knocked harder fortunately, a pretty  girl opened.

“ Hello, can I help you?” She questioned with a smile on her face while I stared at her features.

My heart raced and my  palms became sweaty when I noticed the birthmark at her shoulder blade . I had one , Stan had one. Father always boasted about the natural identification mark , God had somehow bestowed on his lineage.

“Hey, are you alright?” I heard

“Yh “ I whispered.

“I’m looking for a , Mr. Pronto .. um.. Mr.Felix?” I asked , realizing that if my intuition was right he wouldn’t continue with our family’s name.

“Oh! You mean daddy” she answered brightly

“Daddy?” I whispered under my breath, as I felt the tears choke.

She ran up a stairway and left the door opened. I stepped in , taking an appraisal of the living room .

The portrait was just there, staring at me . It felt like a slap on the face, there was my birth father , standing next to a woman that wasn’t my mother , with a young girl and boy , which I can assume to be the children. That should be mummy, Stan and I.I stared in disbelief, I felt suffocated, the tears I held , rolled slowly down my face. Should I tell mummy?what about Stan?. I thought to myself .

The footsteps brought me out of my train of thoughts. I looked up and there he was. The man I’ve always known as father, staring at me with his new daughter at his side.

“Baby girl, this is Sophia’ he stated

‘Baby girl’ I muttered with a scoff

“Sophia, this is Trisha, my daughter “ he stated with no guilt in his voice or eyes

“We can speak outside “ he continued as he placed his hand at my back directing me towards the door

I shuddered in disgust as I stepped away ,

 “Outside?” I questioned

What’s wrong with inside?” I asked

“ I know why you’re here, Sophia and if you want answers you’ll have to do what I say “ he replied

I stared at him while the thought of telling his new daughter the truth about her father rushed in.

“Please” he said to me .

I walked outside with my arms folded across my chest I looked at him for my answers

Trust me when I say, I was better of not knowing the truth.

At that point , I realized my father had always been selfish

“ How do you leave a family you started alone, penniless, dejected because you got tired?” I questioned him in anger

“ You wouldn’t understand “ he stated

“Then explain to me” I said

“Explain to me , father “ the word tasted like sand on my tongue

“ I don’t know how else to say this , but I loved you all, I still do, but I just couldn’t stand the sight of you guys. So I left. To start over “ he stated while putting his hands in his pockets

“ You guys?” Mother stood by you, every single night you came home drunk, she understood the financial burden even when we all know it was your fault the company went bankrupt!” I screamed at him.

“ Why? , she needs all the love now, she needs you now the same way she was there for you. Here you are  having fun with your new family meanwhile, mother is very ill,, Stan needs his father and.. .” I stated angrily

“What about me?” I questioned with tears in my eyes.

“I’m just 17, daddy please , you have to come back home, mummy needs you. We all miss you” I pleaded

“I’m sorry, Sophia” he said

“I can’t, you and your mother will have to figure that out without me. “ he stated

“I wish you well” he continued when I made no response

“Well I don’t, I sincerely hope , nothing works out for you, I hope you keep on repeating the same mistakes over and over again. I hope they do what you did to us , in the most painful way. I hope you die alone, with the same pain I feel now” I spat angrily.

I stormed out, with the feeling of betrayal bartering at my chest ,refusing to look back at the man I once knew as my father while the tears flowed freely with the decision to not tell Stan or mother about my discovery.

Presently..

The clatter of the utensils, drew me out of my thoughts. I wiped the few tears that escaped during my reminiscing.

“Sophia ” Paris screamed in her usual delight as she hugged me from behind.

Paris and I have been best friends for three years. She’s the best thing that’s happened to me for these few years .

“Hi Paris “ I said with a smile on my face

“ Please tell me you aren’t doing a night shift today” she stated with a pout on her face

“ Why would I say that, I need the money “ I said with a sad smile

“ We haven’t gone out in ages, please let’s have fun” she pleaded

Paris..” I began

“Sophie , please . I’m relocating soon. We won’t see as much. I’ll miss you badly. I just need one night for both of us to have fun and make memories. “ she stated

I sighed because she wasn’t lying.

It’s been long we’ve actually had real fun. I’m always in the bakery shop, working. I honestly needed a break.

“ Alright. Just one night doesn’t seem like a bad idea." I said with a grin

She shrieked in delight and looped her arms with mine.

“ You’ll have the best night of your life, I promise “ she said to me with the brightest smile , while I hoped she was right

  • His Prize    Chapter 78

The next morning, I woke up feeling like I was walking on clouds. Leo was still asleep beside me, a peaceful expression on his face.I gently got out of bed and made my way to the bathroom to wash up, after which I moved to the kitchen to make some coffee. As I waited for the brew to finish, I stared out the window, feeling grateful and at peace.Leo came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist."Good morning," he whispered, his voice sending shivers down my spine.I turned around, smiling."Good morning," I replied, leaning in for a kiss.“Would have loved to shower with you.” He told me as he breathed my scent in. I laughed and pecked his lips.“Another time.” I said as he nodded. As we sipped our coffee together and munched on the breakfast made by the chef, I knew that this was just the beginning of our happily ever after.I could hardly believe it myself, but the moment felt too big to keep to myself. The ring was still sparkling on my finger, and I couldn’t wait to tell P

As we pulled away from the kiss, I gazed up at Leo, feeling like I was floating in the air. He smiled back at me, his eyes shining with happiness."We should celebrate," he said, his voice filled with excitement, after the waiters applauded and wished us well.I nodded, still feeling dazed. "Yes, we should". Over a bottle of wine and a delicious meal, we talked about our future, our dreams, and our plans. As the night wore on, I felt like I was getting to know Leo all over again. He was still the same kind, caring, and thoughtful person I had fallen in love with, but now he was also my fiancé.After dinner, we walked along the river, enjoying the cool night air and the sound of the water. Leo put his arm around me, pulling me close, and I felt like I was home.As we stood there, looking out at the city lights, Leo turned to me with a serious expression."Sophia, I promise you, I will always be here for you," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "I will always support you, always

And in the midst of it all, Leo and I were planning our next step. Together. By the next week, most of my items had been moved to his place. The soft hum of the car's engine was the only sound filling the space as Leo drove. His hand rested gently on mine, his thumb tracing the soft skin of my hand absentmindedly.Leo glanced over at me as he drove into his driveway, his eyes soft but full of concern. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.I smiled, though it felt fragile, a little shaky. "I’m fine. I promise."His eyes didn’t leave me, as if searching for a hint of doubt in my words. "You know you can talk to me about anything, right?”I nodded and smiled at his kindness. "I know. It's just... sometimes the past feels heavy. I don’t know if I’m ready to let it all go yet." I turned my face toward the window, watching the world pass by. "But... you make it easier. You make me feel lighter."Leo reached over and brushed his thumb across my cheek. "You don’t

The day had been quiet, the kind of peaceful where your thoughts have a chance to settle and take root.Leo and I had spent most of the afternoon together, quietly enjoying each other’s company. A conversation had been brewing in my mind for some time now. It wasn’t something I’d planned to bring up, but it felt like the right moment.I closed my novel and turned to Leo, catching him looking at me with that familiar, soft smile—the one that always made my heart skip a beat. But today, there was something else in his eyes, an unspoken question."So," I began, my voice a little tentative. "I’ve been thinking a lot about… well, everything." I took a deep breath, steadying myself. "About us, and the future."He shifted slightly after dropping his phone, turning to face me fully. "I’ve been thinking about that, too. What’s on your mind?"I hesitated before speaking again. "I think it’s time we talked about moving in together."Leo raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at his lips, but there w

“Grace told me she named you Sophia, like royalty. I wanted you to bear the family’s name, but Grace refused. She chose to take you as hers. To make sure you never question your identity. I didn’t think it was possible, Gregory didn’t like the idea of being a father before the wedding. Somehow, we all chose to love you.” He continued as he touched my hair.“I would have loved to meet her.” I told him as I smiled warmly at him.“You have her hair and freckles. Grace had a curly head just like me and Thalia and her mom, had straight brown hair.” He blurted out as I tucked my hair behind my ears, feeling self-conscious.“Why don’t I remember you then?” I asked in confusion.“Because I stopped coming when you were still little.” He replied.“Why?” I asked.“Grace, relocated and kept you hidden. We had a fallout. I hated Gregory’s gambling addiction. I hated how useless he was when Grace was pregnant with Stan…I was scared that I'd lose you or Grace, and it would be too late for me to do a

“I don’t understand.” I said as I hurriedly tried to match his pace. His long legs made his strides difficult to follow.“That’s why I’m here.” He said to me as he abruptly stopped. I halted just in time before I could crash into his back.I sighed and frowned at the underlying hero complex I perceived from him.“Why are we here?” I asked him softly. He pointed to the tomb stones at our front.“Thalia Maxwell and… Desmond Maxwell.” I read out loud, before I turned to him in confusion.“These are your parents.” He stated as I stared in disbelief at the graves before me.“How?” I asked with a whisper as I gripped my necklace tightly.“Grace was your aunt… not your mother. Albeit, she did everything a mother should. She was good at that-proving a point.” He told me.“What point?” I asked.“You see, your mother, Thalia was a free spirit…never sat at one place for long. She loved adventures, and it wasn’t a surprise, when she told me, she had met a man and fallen in love with him.” He said
