MEGAN’S POV

My eyes gleamed with excitement as I kept staring at the pregnancy test results. The joy I felt knew no bounds. I was finally pregnant for my beloved husband, Alpha Austin. I was going to break the good news to him tonight over dinner—it’s our anniversary today.

Placing the result on the table, I reached for the cooking apron and wore it. “Three years of being his Luna and wife. Austin has always dreamt of this moment… our pup.” I rubbed my stomach tenderly.

He had always liked strawberry-flavored cakes… they’re his favorite.

“My Luna, are you sure you want to bake by yourself? We can do that if it pleases you.” Miss Adeline, one of the servants tried to stop me.

However, I shook my head in disagreement. “No… I’ll bake the cake. Since our marriage three years ago, I’ve always baked him strawberry cakes for our anniversary dinners.” I replied, suddenly my countenance changed, and I mumbled. “Even though he rarely shows up or eats the cakes that I’ve been baking.”

Hopefully, this year’s anniversary will be different. After all, I have good news for him. Well, I hoped he would show up because the past few years, he never did. In fact, he didn’t even remember. It’s either he worked overtime at the office or he traveled out of the country for business meetings… or so I thought.

The ticking sound of the oven smacked me out of my deep thoughts. I quickly put on the oven gloves and proceeded to take the cake out of the oven.

A few minutes later, I had already served the assorted cuisines I made with the strawberry cake on the dining table. Everything was set and present… well, except Austin’s presence.

I had set his bath and lit his favorite scented candles, prepared his pajamas, and set out his fur slides so that his feet wouldn't get cold. I waited for him to return, but there was no sign of him. The food was getting cold, and the three candles that were stuck into the strawberry cake had already melted away.

Tonight was supposed to be our special night, our anniversary dinner. He didn’t come home until midnight. I had already fallen asleep on the couch when the blaring horn of his car woke me up. I snappily glanced at the wall clock and realized it was 12:47am.

The door creaked open, and he walked in while on the phone. I rushed to him and helped him take off his suit.

Immediately, he hung the call up. I smiled broadly at him and said. “Austin, I have something important to tell you…”

“Can’t you see that I’m busy? The pack’s in need of a lot of cash. We’re out of time. I don’t have time for your jokes; go to bed.” His voice was rather cold and nonchalant.

My eyebrows furrowed. “Money problems? What is going on? Maybe I can help…”

“Help?” He scoffed mockingly. “Don’t be ridiculous, Megan. What could you possibly do? Be good, go to bed.” Austin dismissively uttered, placing his phone back on his ears.

I swallowed hard, but I didn’t stop. “Look, I made your favorite strawberry cake, just the way you like it. Why don’t you have a taste?” I urged, cutting a slice of the cake onto a ceramic plate and stretching it out to him.

He didn’t even spare a glance at it; he waved his hand at me, the plate fell from my hand and shattered into pieces on the ground as a gasp escaped my lips. I tripped and fell, and then my hands pierced into the broken pieces of plate. I winced in pain as my hands started bleeding.

“Megan, are you…” He was still asking me while stretching his hand out for me to hold onto but got interrupted by the clicking sound of heels against the polished floor.

“Austin! You really have to go pick Kayla up from the airport, or she'll be stranded.” That was Austin’s sister, Alice’s voice.

I was about to reach for Alpha Austin’s hand, but when he heard that Kayla was at the airport, stranded, he didn’t bother to glance at me or to help me up. “What? Kayla is coming back?” I could swear that in the three years that I’ve been married to Austin, I’ve never heard him speak in such a joyful manner before.

“She didn’t tell you? Probably she wanted to surprise you.” Alice squeaked in excitement.

Without reluctance, Austin turned to leave, but I tried to stop him. Doesn’t he remember? It’s our anniversary dinner. Just now he told me he was busy and didn’t want to listen to the good news I had to share with him, but for Kayla, he would risk driving at midnight despite his ‘busy’ schedule.

“Austin…” I called out with a shaky voice, and he paused. Then, he hesitantly turned his gaze back at me. “Happy anniversary—” That was all I could mumble.

His eyebrows fluttered. “A… Anniversary? Today is our…”

“What are you waiting for, Austin? Hurry, go and pick up Kayla. You know how delicate she is, don’t you?” Alice urged him.

All he did was glance at me and then storm out of the house hurriedly. Tears pricked my eyes, but I managed to blink them right back.

Alice burst into laughter as she bent over to me and held my jaw.

“Poor little housewife can’t even play wife properly. My brother, Austin, is the strongest Alpha in the pack's history. And you?” She sneered and continued. “Oh, Megan, you’re just an omega. A lowborn orphan. What makes you think my brother would waste his time on a worthless omega like you? You’re never good enough for him; only Kayla is worthy of being with him. If she hadn't traveled out of the country three years ago for a modeling career, my brother would have never married a gold digger like you. Anniversary? Bullshit! Who cares about your little charade? The only things that you’re good for are doing the dishes, cooking for us, and doing laundry. Don’t be carried away by that empty Luna title of yours because you’re not worthy of being the Crescent Moon Pack’s Luna. Suit yourself! Bye.” She waved at me with a smug expression before walking away.

Tears brimmed in my eyes. Kayla? Isn’t she Austin’s first love? The one he never forgot. For three years, I’ve hoped and wished that Austin would love me back, but those were just empty wishes. To others, I might be the perfect Luna and Austin’s beloved wife, but in reality, his heart was never with me. He just married me to spite Kayla for breaking off their engagement and traveling out of the country for her modeling career. Meanwhile, I have loved him since college, and marrying him was all I have ever wanted. I was willing to give up everything just to be with him.

Now, Kayla is back—his true love and childhood sweetheart. I took a deep sigh and rubbed my tummy. “Baby, do you think Mommy is overthinking it? Does your daddy still love us or not? Is he sad just because the pack is losing money?” I mouthed, forcing a sad smile.
