CALLIE

Now, I was trying to hide from Andy. Back then, the universe had done a magnificent job of keeping us apart. We were never aligned to begin with, so it was easy. However, this day, just when I decided to let go of my feelings for him, the universe seemed to have awakened with a vendetta and thought, “Let’s ruin Callie’s day in very specific ways!”

Because suddenly, it felt like Andy was everywhere.

In the hallway I was walking through.

In the elevator I just stepped into.

At the water fountain I reached for.

And now, as I turned a corner too quickly, I collided with what felt like a solid wall. I wished it had been a wall, but no—it was Andy.

My shoulder bumped his chest, and I stumbled back, mumbling an apology before I realized who it was. My heart stopped for a second. He still looked very good. Ugh. That stupid dark hoodie, the stupid messy hair, the stupid calm face. He looked handsome.

I cursed internally as a crinkling noise made us both glance down. A small packet

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 25: ANDY

ANDYI couldn’t give up. Callie didn’t give up on me for a long time. Since sophomore year, even when I was too oblivious to notice, even when I brushed her off without meaning to, she kept showing up. She stayed. That kind of heart... how could I not try, too? She never gave up on me. So I couldn’t give up on her. My screen lit up, and I wondered whether turning it off would be the right choice. However, I decided to hold onto the call despite my initial hesitation. My dad appeared, looking like he’d just stumbled out of a magazine shoot. “Well, would you look at that,” Dad gasped, clutching his chest. “My son! Calling me! Not a message, not a missed call—I’m on a live video call with my boy!” “Hi, Dad,” I said, trying not to smile but already failing. “What’s the occasion?” he asked, setting the phone down at a weird angle, something only old parents on Facebook could manage. “I need help,” I admitted. His expression turned serious, and it looked like he was about

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 24: CALLIE

CALLIE Why does Andy look so hurt?I shouldn’t care. I shouldn’t even be thinking about it. But the way he stood there… lips parted, eyes pleading like he was going to burst—like he’d just realized something big and now didn’t know what to do with it.He likes me?Just like that? There was no warning or build-up. Just—"what would you say if I said I like you?"And now he looks like I’ve kicked his heart in.God, why now? Why does he get to be sincere now? Why does he get to say that now—after everything?I hugged the books to my chest and tried to keep walking. I didn’t want to think about his voice or the way my own heart skipped a beat hearing it. Because if I did, I knew I’d cave. And I can’t cave. Not again.I rounded the corner. And there was Thomas. Leaning against the wall, arms crossed, waiting for me. My eyes narrowed. “Were you listening?”He clicked his tongue. “No.”He paused.“But you can tell me what he said.”I stared at him, trying to figure out if he was serious. He

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 23: ANDY

ANDY Callie. Callie. Callie. It was getting ridiculous.I used to think she was the ridiculous one—showing up out of nowhere with all that sunshine and bold declarations like she wasn’t afraid of anything. Like I didn’t shoot her down a hundred different ways with my silence. But now, every time I see her, I can’t seem to look away. It’s stupid. I’m stupid. She bumped into me earlier. And I swear, it took everything in me not to reach out and steady her longer than necessary. That tiny candy packet on the ground? She looked so horrified that I almost laughed, but she was so cute, too. Then she went and ate it just to prove a point. I knew she doesn’t like artificial strawberry, by the way. Her whole face said so.God, I’m an idiot. Is this how she felt the whole time? Is this what it’s like—liking someone who won’t look at you the same way?Because it sucks. And now she’s keeping her distance. She appears tired, like she doesn’t want to try anymore. And maybe I deserve that. But it

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 21: ANDY

ANDYI didn’t know what to do.I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark, elbows on my knees, hands buried in my hair. Since it was the weekend, the city buzzed outside my apartment window, more alive than ever. All I wanted was for the entire city to quiet down. Callie’s words echoed in my mind, relentless. She was giving up? She wasn’t going to bother with me anymore?I squeezed my eyes shut. Why did that hurt so much? My chest felt like someone had tied a belt around my ribs and kept pulling. I couldn’t even bring myself to call her name. I’d hurt her. Or maybe I just didn’t deserve her in the first place. Why was it so hard for me to trust people?I rubbed my face, hoping to scrub away the thoughts crowding in. Growing up as an Astor truly wasn’t ordinary. Somewhere along the way, I learned to keep my circle small. But damn it, Callie—she wasn’t like anyone else.So why couldn’t I just believe her?Why did every inch of me freeze when she said she liked me? Why did I panic? Why… was

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 20: CALLIE

CALLIE I cried the moment I got home. The second the door clicked shut behind me, I dropped my bag and leaned my back against the wall, the tears spilling freely now. It was the weekend—thank goodness. I couldn’t bear to show up on campus tomorrow pretending I was fine.I told myself I wouldn’t come home unless I absolutely had to, that I’d stay strong and keep my head up, and that I’d hold it all in like always. But tonight, I needed my mom more than anything else. The bus ride was long and silent. My chest ached, and no amount of pressing my lips together or blinking fast could stop the sting in my eyes. It wasn’t just about Andy. It was everything. It was me, it was this dumb heart of mine that just didn’t know when to quit. When I reached our neighborhood, the familiar streetlights looked dimmer, like even they knew what I was feeling. I dragged myself up to the door and knocked softly. The lights inside flickered on, and then the door opened.“Callie?” My mom blinked at me in s
