Chapter 1

Author: Frost Whiteleaf
Sophia York dumped a large bag of groceries onto the coffee table and turned to my husband, Ivan Jefferson.

"Lily can't have any of these," she said. "Why don't you give them to your parents instead?"

Here we go again.

Over the years, more than half of the pastries and yogurts that I'd bought had disappeared for the same reason.

Ivan gave her a dismissive wave. "Why go through all that trouble? Since she can't eat them, you can have them."

And just like that, the groceries were carried into the living room and turned into Sophia's.

"Don't worry about all that junk food," Ivan coaxed, slipping an arm around my waist. "I'll buy you other snacks, okay?"

He never lived up to his word. Instead, he'd always tell me to put up with my cravings a little longer.

"I'm going to move the knife rack, Ivan. Lily won't mind, right?" Sophia's voice rang out from the kitchen.

Before he could feed me another blueberry, Ivan paused. Then, he turned around and immediately walked into the kitchen.

He tapped her on the head affectionately as he took the knife rack from her. "Feel free to arrange things however you like."

Before long, the countertop, spice jars, cooking utensils, and even my teddy-bear hand towel had all been rearranged to Sophia's preferences.

I personally arranged the kitchen when Ivan and I first got married.

Back then, he'd wrap his arms around me and smile dotingly while saying, "This is our home now, Lily."

The blueberry in my mouth suddenly began to taste bitter.

I opened the refrigerator and found the shelves had been rearranged too. The top shelf, where I had always kept my milk, was now filled with vegetables. The bottom shelf, by contrast, was completely empty.

Everything Sophia had cleared out earlier was now shoved together in a messy pile.

It felt as though everything in this house had to obey Sophia's wishes—including me.

Soon, the smell of food filled the room. Moments later, Sophia emerged from the kitchen carrying a pot.

"Come sit down, Lily."

She was wearing my apron, and my teddy bear hand towel was tucked in her pocket. If anything, she looked more like the owner of this house than I did.

There was a spread of food on the table, and my favorite, roasted chicken, was among them. She had even set out my plate and utensils for me.

When I reached across the table to help myself to some roasted chicken, Sophia tapped on my fork.

I knew what that meant. I wasn't allowed to have any.

"Try this instead," she said, placing a piece of poached chicken on my plate. "I made it just for you. It's good for you and the baby."

Ivan ladled some soup into a white bowl and set it down next to my hand. "Listen to Sophia. Just bear with this arrangement for a little longer, okay? You'll be able to eat whatever you want after the baby's born."

He was asking me to put up with this for a little longer once again. At this point, I didn't know when I'd ever be considered healthy enough.

I didn't feel like talking. So, I lowered my head and quietly ate my meal.

Ivan reached for a piece of the poached chicken, but Sophia quickly stopped him.

"Seriously? I prepared this for Lily," she said disapprovingly.

Ivan flashed her an awkward smile before helping himself to the roasted chicken instead.

I took a bite of my chicken. It tasted incredibly gamey, and the smell immediately made my stomach turn.

Was this what she had specially prepared for me to improve my health? No wonder she wouldn't let Ivan have any.

"It tastes bad," I declared.

My comment seemed to have caught Sophia by surprise.

She immediately took a bite herself. Laughing, she said, "It tastes fine to me. Maybe your taste buds are off because you're pregnant. Try taking another bite."

Chewing on a mouthful of roasted chicken, Ivan chimed in, "Exactly. Take another bite. Sophia's cooking is really good."

I hummed in response and tried my best to suppress my nausea.

When Sophia stood up to get herself a bowl of soup, I noticed that she was holding my bunny-shaped bowl.

Ivan and I had made that bowl ourselves when we visited a small town years ago. I still had a photo of it pinned at the top of my social media page.

I set down my utensils and stared at Sophia. "The bowl you're holding was a gift to me from Ivan."

Sophia didn't look apologetic at all. Holding the bowl in her hands, she replied, "Oh, I'm sorry, Lily. I didn't know."

There were plenty of bowls in our cabinet. She'd chosen plain-looking bowls for Ivan and me, yet she'd somehow picked this one for herself.

Sophia poured the soup back into the pot and pushed the bunny-shaped bowl toward me. "You can use this one, Lily. I'll get myself another bowl."

Ivan slipped an arm around my shoulders. "It's just a bowl. Don't be so petty. Sophia's not a stranger."

I glanced at the greasy bowl in front of me and the foul-smelling chicken on my plate. My appetite had disappeared completely.

Pushing Ivan's arm away, I declared, "Forget it. I'm not hungry anymore."

A trace of displeasure flickered across Ivan's face.

"Why are you being so difficult?" he whispered. "Sophia spent the entire morning cooking for you. Can't you show her some appreciation?"

Sophia reached over to stop him.

"This is all my fault. You're still pregnant, Lily. You still need to eat something even if your emotions are all over the place."

Ivan's expression darkened. "Sophia has spoiled you. I can't believe you need to be coaxed into eating now."

Sophia had taken over my home, deliberately used my personal bowl, and insisted I eat something that tasted incredibly gamey. Yet somehow, I was the unreasonable one.

The foul smell of the chicken hit me again, and my stomach began to lurch. Unable to hold it in any longer, I dashed to the bathroom and threw up.

My stomach cramped violently as stomach acid and the foul taste of chicken rose into my throat, leaving me choking for breath.

From the bathroom, I could still hear Sophia trying to defend me.

"That's just what pregnancy is like. Lily didn't do it on purpose."

Ivan let out a cold snort. "I think she's throwing a fit on purpose. She's just vying for attention."

I leaned against the toilet. I couldn't explain what I was feeling. If two people were in love, perhaps they wouldn't have to beg for the other person's attention.

Even after a long period of time, Ivan never came in to check on me.

I rested a hand over my stomach and made up my mind. I booked a flight to return to my family home seven days later. I didn't need to stay here and put up with this any longer.

Ivan really wanted to push through for dignity's sake and find something else to eat. However, he'd transferred my money away while I was pregnant. With a heavy heart, he asked hoarsely, "Lily, could I have a slice of bread?"I handed him a slice of packaged bread. His eyes lit up, but the next second, I said, "Open that for Benjy. He's playing a game right now."Ivan's heart ached. He was still hungry, yet I only had eyes for Benjy.Benjy wasn't holding back either. He was really playing a game on Ivan's phone.Ivan sighed. He'd put up with it. This was just karma, after all.The melon pressing against his stomach was causing him some dull pain. No, his stomach really did hurt. His butt clenched, and he rushed for the toilet. There had been laxatives in the noodles. He collapsed limply on the toilet.I stood in the doorway with my arms crossed.I said snarkily, "You've really been spoiled, to get diarrhoea just from eating noodles."Ivan was now aching all over. Benjy quickly got into character. He invited Ivan to sit on the couch and stuffed a melon under the latter's shirt."This is your "baby". Take good care of it," he instructed.Ivan nodded and cradled the melon as if he really were pregnant.Benjy then took Ivan's phone out of his pocket and confiscated it."Phones emit radiation that's harmful to the baby, so you shouldn't use one for now."I added, "That's right. Nothing's more important than our baby, so be good and live with it.""Live with it". What familiar words.Ivan smiled wryly. So, being told to "live with it" felt this stifling. Many different snacks lay on the coffee table, and among them was the chilli con carne Ivan had brought over just now. After couching by the doorway for an entire afternoon, Ivan's stomach had long since started growling. With thoughts of the treatment I'd suffered in mind, he tentatively picked out a slice of plain bread. He was just about to take a bite when Benjy slapped it out of his h

Sophia tried to hide the sticky note, but Ivan snatched it up."That report indicating my malnutrition is under my pillow. If you don't want our child to starve to death in the womb, leave me alone."Ivan was stunned. Then, his eyes bloodshot, he rushed into the bedroom like a madman.Every value listed on the report fell below the average range. The doctor had written a note that read, "If this nutritional deficiency persists, there will be a risk of miscarriage."Ivan looked at all the downward-pointing arrows glaring up at him from the report, then grabbed Sophia firmly by the collar."Didn't you say you were a professional? Why would Lily be malnourished? Answer me!"Sophia was so frightened she took on an unusually tearful tone. "No… it wasn't me who caused it."Ivan recalled how slender my shoulders had been when he hugged me. He remembered how he would scold me for being insensible when all I wanted was to buy a meal, and how he transferred my money away.Had I only le

When Ivan woke up, he instinctively tried to hug me only for his hands to grasp empty air.Overcome with inexplicable panic, he hurriedly got up to check the items in the bedroom. My pajamas, cosmetics, and suitcase were all accounted for. There didn't appear to be any clothes missing either. He sighed in relief. It seemed he'd been overthinking things. In the dining room, Sophia had prepared a separate portion for me as usual.Ivan looked at the three-person meal on the table and recalled his unanswered calls, irritation rising."I don't know where Lily's gone. She's not answering my calls," he stated.Sophia stopped chewing and said with a smile. "Don't worry. She told me that she was going out to buy a few things this morning, so she's probably just not used to the food at home."Ivan thought back to the takeout container in the trash can, feeling a mix of frustration and disappointment. "She just loves eating that sort of junk. Even though your cooking is great, she's still

The past few meals had been so unpleasant that I was practically starving. Hence, I decided to order takeout. I got myself some beef tacos, and I specifically instructed the restaurant to go easy on the oil and spices. My food arrived fairly quickly. Thankfully, Ivan and Sophia weren't home when the delivery arrived. The moment I caught myself feeling relieved, I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. How pathetic. I couldn't believe that I had to sneak around just to eat a meal. The beef tacos were delicious, and a hundred times better than anything Sophia had made for me. Tears streamed down my face as I ate, but I wasn't sure why I was crying.…Later that afternoon, Ivan spotted the empty takeout container in the trash. "Why did you eat something like this again, Lily?" he asked disapprovingly. "Sophia would be so upset if she found out. I went through a lot of trouble to convince her to come back. How could you do this?""I don't care about any of that. Besides, t

Sophia froze for a moment before putting on a wounded expression. "Of course you and Ivan are the ones who run this household. I'm just a guest," she cried."What kind of guest has this much say in everything? Do I need to ask for your permission every time I eat?" I demanded.Upon hearing this, Ivan slammed his utensils down on the table."Enough!" he roared. "I know you're not in the best mood because of your pregnancy, but Sophia has been taking care of you for the longest time. She even prepares a separate meal for you. She's doing all of this for free, and you're still complaining about it?""For free?" I shot back. "The ingredients she uses for four dishes and a pot of soup cost 200 dollars. All of those ingredients were paid for with my money, Ivan."Sophia immediately stepped in to de-escalate the situation. "Alright, alright. Don't be upset, Lily. I'll keep the meals relatively simple from now on. I won't spend so much money on ingredients anymore," she said.Ivan fl
