Chapter 19: Frenemies

My heart leaped into my throat as I sprang to my feet, every muscle in my body tense and ready for action. I reached for the nearest weapon I could find—a heavy iron poker from beside the fireplace—and held it at the ready, my senses on high alert.

The footsteps drew nearer, growing louder. And the cabin door swung open, revealing a figure silhouetted against the early morning light. For a split second, I froze, my mind racing as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. And then, I recognized the person and felt relieved.

It was my friend, Jake.

"Sean?" he called out, his voice tinged with concern as he stepped into the cabin. "Are you okay? I heard about what happened and came as soon as I could."

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding, relief flooding through me at the sight of a familiar face. "Jake, thank god you're here," I said, my voice trembling with emotion as I moved to embrace him. "We're in trouble, man. Big trouble."
