CHAPTER FIVE

LAUREN’S POV

My blood turned to actual ice in my veins. "Serena?"

I stared at him. Julian looked like a dark, terrifying god standing in the middle of a trash heap. The flashing neon lights of the cheap slot machines reflected in his cold, calculating eyes. He shouldn't be here. This was my world, the dirty, hidden underbelly of the city, not his sanitized penthouse in the sky.

I had to say something fast. If he figured out I was dealing cards down here to make my own money, t

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREELAUREN’S POVI yanked my shirt up from the floor with shaking hands and glared at Julian through the mess he had made of me.“You disgusting bastard.”He set the gun down on the desk like it was nothing. “I’ve been called worse,” he said.“By people still alive?”His mouth twitched. Not a smile. Worse.I shoved my arms into my sleeves and nearly missed one because my fingers were trembling so badly. He stood there and watched me put on my jeans like he had all the time in the world.“You’re sick,” I said. “Do you know that?”Julian picked up his whiskey again and took a slow sip. “Repeatedly.”I stared at him in disgust. He wore a white shirt, first five buttons undone and black pants. “Did you kill them?”His gaze lifted to mine. “Your parents?”“Yes, my parents.”“If I had, you’d know.”I folded my arms over myself, partly because I was cold and partly because I wanted some sort of barrier between us. “So this was what? Entertainment?”“This was a test.”“You p

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONELAUREN’S POV I sat across from Elena Ian in a sterile, overpriced café in the center of the city. Elena asked to meet and while it was the hardest thing having to pretend like Serena to her friend, I got information from her. Apparently, Serena has a male friend who was always there for her and helped her through her marriage with Julian. This man knew her since high school. He might actually be Dante Rossi. And if I was right and he was indeed Dante then, he probably set Serena and Julian up for marriage for an intention best known to him. Well, I have to first confirm if that friend is Dante.I walked into the penthouse an hour later. The place was dead quiet. I kicked off my shoes in the hallway, the cool marble floor chilling my bare feet. I started walking toward the bedroom. Then, I heard it. A low, dark chuckle coming from the study.I stopped. My pulse ticked up. I turned around, walked toward the heavy oak doors, and pushed them open.Julian was sitting in

CHAPTER THIRTYLAUREN’S POVThe car ride to Julian’s headquarters felt like a trap closing in slow motion. I sat in the passenger seat of his black SUV, fingers twisting the hem of the black pencil skirt Nancy had laid out for me this morning. Julian hadn’t said much since breakfast, just that one filthy promise about the couch in his office. But his hand kept brushing my thigh every time he shifted gears, like he couldn’t stop touching me even when he was pissed about whatever he thought I was hiding.I kept replaying the lighter in my head. Jake’s lighter. The one I’d seen in Julian’s jacket pocket last night. “You’re quiet,” he said, voice low as we pulled into the underground parking garage. “That usually means you’re plotting something.”I forced a laugh. “Or maybe I’m just wondering if I’m dressed right for whatever this meeting is.”He parked, killed the engine, and turned to me. Those dark eyes pinned me in place. “You’re dressed like my wife. That’s all that matters.” His th

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE LAUREN’S POV I woke up to Julian’s arm heavy across my waist. Then my brain caught up. The lighter. Jake’s lighter. Sitting in Julian’s jacket pocket like some twisted trophy. He killed him. Or he had him killed. That was the only thing that made sense. Jake didn’t just decide to off himself right before I showed up with the cash. Not after all those threats. I didn't want to think too much about it so I went back to sleep. When I woke up again, Julian was putting on a shirt. His gaze slid to me, warm and careful. “Morning,” he murmured. “You sleep okay?” I forced a smile. “Just wondering if Nancy made coffee yet or if I have to bribe her again.” Julian chuckled. “You don’t have to bribe anyone. You’re the wife. Act like it.” Wife. Right. I got up and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Julian came in when I spat the water in my mouth out, the restroom suffocating with his cologne. He picked up his Saline Solution, stretching his hand before me, hi

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT LAUREN’S POV *Time’s up. Meet me at the address I sent you in one hour with the cash, or I go straight to the office and ask for Julian Cross.* I dressed quickly in the darkest clothes I could find in Serena’s sprawling closet—a plain black hoodie and a pair of faded jeans that I had bought myself. No makeup. No jewelry. I shoved Serena’s phone into my pocket and slipped out of the master bedroom. The penthouse was dead silent. I crept down the hallway, keeping my footsteps incredibly light until I reached the private elevator. I bypassed it and took the service stairs instead, descending three flights before catching a regular elevator to the underground garage. I ordered a rideshare a block away from the building, constantly checking over my shoulder to make sure Silas hadn’t materialized from the shadows. The address Jake had sent was on the far edge of the city, in a neighborhood and a bleak, desolate place. The rideshare driver dropped me off at the cu

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN LAUREN’S POV The private flight back to the city was suffocating. Julian had spent the entire nine hours sitting across from me, a glass of scotch in his hand, reading through files on his tablet like he hadn’t just shattered my entire reality against a bathroom door. He knew. He sat at that desk, drank his coffee, went to meetings, and watched me with those dark, calculating eyes, knowing exactly what Serena had put under his floorboards. When the private elevator finally chimed and the polished steel doors slid open to the penthouse, the silence between us snapped. "You knew for three months," I said. Julian didn't stop walking. He stepped out of the elevator, tossing his keys onto the glass console table near the entrance. He shrugged off his suit jacket, draped it over a chair, and rolled up the sleeves of his dark shirt. "Three months and four days, to be exact," he replied, his tone casually indifferent. He walked over to the built-in bar and
