CHAPTER SIX

LAUREN’S POV

“Shock,” I shot back immediately. “It's called shock, Julian. Have you heard of it?”

His eyes narrowed. “Shock doesn't stop basic human reflexes. You stood there like a stone.”

“Maybe I'm just used to the pain of being around you,” I spat.

He opened his mouth to reply, his fingers digging harder into my unburned arm, but a sharp ringtone cut through the air.

Julian froze. He glared at me for a long second before pulling his phone from his pocket. He glanced at the scre

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE LAUREN’S POV “Do you like it?”I turned slowly. Julian was approaching me. He wore a tailored black tuxedo that fit him flawlessly. It was the first painting auction night, and it had been a massive success. Everything had sold. Everything except the single painting I was currently staring at.“It’s a fake,” I said softly.“I know,” Julian replied, stopping right beside me. His arm brushed mine.“But it feels soulful,” I murmured, taking a small sip of my champagne. “Even though it's not the real thing... it just feels safe.”“I know,” Julian said again. His voice was lower this time. “I thought about you when I saw it.”I paused. I turned around, intending to ask him what he meant by that, but the words died in my throat. He was already staring at me. He reached out and took my free hand. His thumb traced over my knuckles before he lifted my hand to his lips, kissing the back of it so sweetly it made my chest ache. Then, I felt the cold slide of metal against

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWOLAUREN’S POV By the time we got on the plane, I felt like my nerves had been peeled open.Less than twenty-four hours. That was how long we had before a bomb somewhere in Julian’s world decided to finish the job Serena had started.Silas had stayed back to make sure none of the cars were anywhere near the apartment complex by the time it went off. That should have made me feel better. It did not.I sat stiffly in one seat of the private jet like if I moved too much, something else would explode.Across from me, Julian sat with his tablet in hand, calm as sin, scrolling like he was not a man flying away from a possible car bomb.I stared at him for a while. Then I stared out the window. Then I stared at him again. He did not look up once. After a few hours, I got tired of my own thoughts and went to the bathroom just to feel like I was doing something. When I came back, he was still on that tablet.I stopped in front of him. “Are you married to that thing?”He did n

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE LAUREN’S POV Towards the end of the meeting, I stopped pretending to listen. The men were still talking, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. My phone was hidden low in my lap under the table as I searched things I never thought I would ever search in my life. *Noiseless bombs.* *Silent explosive device detection.* *Can a bomb be hidden in a car without scanners finding it?* Every answer made me feel worse. Some said custom devices could evade normal checks. Some said the only real protection was controlling movement. Limiting exposure. Keeping the target away from the vehicle. Which was exactly what I was trying to do. I scrolled faster. Nothing useful. When I finally looked up, the room was quiet. I blinked and glanced around. Empty chairs. The meeting had ended. My heart skipped. Then I turned left. Julian was still there. Still watching me. Like he had been doing it for a while. I froze with my phone still in my hand. “W

  • His Wrong Wife, His Right Obsession    Lauren’s Suggestion

CHAPTER TWENTYLAUREN’S POVI spent half the day with Serena’s phone in my hand and dread in my throat.Nothing.Nothing useful. Nothing clear. Just gaps. Deleted chats. Deleted files. Empty spaces where answers should have been. She most definitely formatted the phone before deleting the rest of the files. “She really cleaned this thing out,” I muttered.I sat on the edge of the bed and went through it again anyway, like maybe the truth would suddenly grow a conscience and show itself. It didn’t.By afternoon, I was in the car park.I checked one car. Then another. Then another.Inside. Outside. Underneath. Doors. Trunk. Tires.Nothing.No wires. No device. No clue. Just my own panic getting louder.By the time I got to the sixth car, a security man finally approached me with a confused frown.“Madam… are you looking for something?”I straightened too fast. “Silas.”He blinked. “Pardon?”“I need to speak to Silas.”He stepped back immediately. “Yes, madam.”I was already dialing bef

CHAPTER NINETEENLAUREN’S POVI did not pick the phone back up immediately.I just stared at it on the floor like it had grown teeth and bitten me.Silas said my name once. Then again, quieter.“Lauren.”I bent down with stiff fingers and grabbed the phone. Then I kept reading.I should have stopped.I didn’t.I scrolled through message after message, every word feeling like a slap.Serena: *She is such a doormat.*Jake: *That’s why she’s easy.*Serena: *She’d make a good wife for some boring poor man.*Jake: *I only keep her around because she listens.*My throat burned. There were messages about sex. About hotels. About sneaking around. About a stupid vacation Jake once told me was to visit his aunt outside town. His aunt.I laughed, and it came out broken.Silas took one step closer. “Lauren.”I swiped again.Pictures. Deleted now, but restored. Flirty texts. Times. Dates. The tears started before I even noticed them. Hot and humiliating. I wiped at them angrily, but more kept fall

  • His Wrong Wife, His Right Obsession    A Restored Affair

CHAPTER EIGHTEENLAUREN’S POVThe next day, I went shopping because Serena’s closet made me feel like I was wearing someone else’s skin.Which, to be fair, I was.I stood in front of a rack of dresses that looked like they came with their own warning labels and muttered, “Absolutely not.”The salesgirl smiled too brightly. “That one would look amazing on you, ma’am.”“It would look illegal on me.”She laughed like she thought I was joking.I wasn’t.I grabbed skimpy dresses that weren't too revealing for me but revealing enough for Serena to wear, tank tops, crop tops, and one bumshorts that looked expensive enough to pass for Serena without making me feel half naked. I was planning to stop by my parents’ place after and tell them Serena was with Dante Rossi and they could deal with the disaster they created.I was holding two tops when someone suddenly wrapped both arms around me.“Oh my God, Serena!”I froze for one second, then forced a smile.A woman pulled back and stared at me w
