Chapter 2

작가: Bowl of Rice
The sound of me messing with the lock drew Luther over.

He looked like he'd just come back from outside, carrying breakfast in one hand.

“Lily, the lock isn't broken. I'm transferring some data on the computer in there, and I didn't want you accidentally touching anything, so I locked the room.

“The project should be wrapped up this afternoon. I'll unlock it when I get home tonight. Don't worry about it.”

As he spoke, Luther gently steered me away from the office door.

“Forget about the lock. Come on, let's eat.

“I got pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and those cinnamon rolls you like from that little bakery.”

I nodded obediently and didn't glance back at the brand-new lock that had appeared for no reason.

There was definitely something in that room he didn't want me to see.

I didn't question him directly.

I didn't want to tip him off.

Instead, I sat down and finished breakfast with him, planning to investigate after he left.

Once we were done, Luther headed to work as usual.

When he crossed the balcony, I instinctively looked down, wanting to see whether those two strange shadows were still there.

But the floor was empty.

That was when I realized the curtains had been drawn completely shut.

The only light in the apartment came from the cold recessed lights overhead.

I was just about to reach for the curtains when Luther wrapped his arms around me from behind.

He kissed the top of my head, his voice as affectionate as ever.

“I'm leaving.

“I'll pick you up when I get off work.”

Then he left.

Once I was alone, I called a locksmith.

The person on the phone asked me to send over a photo of the lock so they could identify the model and assign the right technician.

After studying the picture for quite a while, the woman on the other end finally spoke.

“Ma'am, that's a high-security Grade C cylinder. You don't see those very often in residential properties.

“It's difficult both to install and to remove. We only have one technician who's certified to work on that model, and he's tied up at a bank today.

“I can book him for tomorrow.”

She hesitated before adding,

“And this particular model has an anti-tamper mechanism. If someone tries to force it, the internal system can lock up completely.

“So I strongly recommend that you don't try to break it open yourself. If you damage the mechanism, even our technician may not be able to get it open.”

She checked something on her end.

“Once he starts, you're probably looking at at least three hours.”

I froze.

The more complicated the lock sounded, the more certain I became that whatever was inside that office wasn't ordinary.

“Okay. Book him for tomorrow.”

I hung up.

Then I turned on the TV out of habit and started doing chores around the house.

“Good morning. Today is May 14. Welcome to the morning news. We begin with two international stories...”

Around noon, Luther called.

“Lily, what are you doing?”

His tone was casual.

“Did you eat lunch? Don't tell me you're filling up on snacks again instead of eating a real meal.”

My hand froze halfway into a bag of chips.

I gave a guilty little laugh and immediately changed the subject.

“I ate.

“I'm just curled up on the couch watching TV.”

I tucked the chips behind a cushion.

“What about you? Have you eaten yet? Why are you calling me at this hour?”

Luther sighed.

He sounded tired.

“My meeting just ended. I'm about to grab something quick.

“Lily, I probably won't be able to go grocery shopping with you tonight.

“I've got an online meeting a little after eight, so I'll need to take it from the office.

“And tomorrow... I'll probably have to go into work too.”

Hearing the exhaustion in his voice, I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

At the same time, a flicker of relief went through me.

If Luther had to work tomorrow, I wouldn't have to come up with some excuse to get him out of the house when the locksmith arrived.

“It's fine. We can go another time.

“The grocery store isn't going anywhere.

“Go eat something. I'll see you when you get home.”

He answered softly.

After we hung up, I stared at the mystery series playing on TV.

It was boring.

I could predict every twist before it happened, and before long I was struggling to keep my eyes open.

So I went back to the bedroom to take a nap.

Somewhere between sleep and waking, I had the vague sensation that someone was watching me.

The feeling was heavy.

Clammy.

Unrelenting.

I slept badly.

When I woke up, my heart was racing.

I checked the time, got out of bed, and pulled some meat from the freezer to thaw.

“What should I make tonight...?”

I started listing dishes under my breath.

“Maybe meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and roasted green beans.”

I paused.

“No. We had green beans yesterday. I'll do shrimp and broccoli instead.”

I typed out the menu and sent it to Luther, asking if there was anything in particular he wanted.

His reply came almost immediately.

'No. That all sounds perfect. Basically everything I was craving. I'll be home soon. Thanks, Lily.'

A second message followed.

'I haven't had meatloaf and mashed potatoes in forever.'

  • Hold Me Before the Sun Goes Down   Chapter 8

When Luther was twenty-eight, I was twenty-five.Back then, the world still had color.Life moved forward the way it was supposed to.We even argued over stupid little things, like whether the toothpaste tube should be squeezed from the middle or rolled up from the bottom. But for the next seven years, time stood still for me.I lived through the pain of losing him again and again. My mind withered. My soul dried up.Until today.Until the year Luther turned thirty-five.At last, I finally turned twenty-six.I sobbed in his arms until my whole body hurt, until it felt like I might throw up everything inside me.Luther simply held me.He let my nails dig into his skin.He lowered his head and looked at the girl in his arms who had finally agreed to grow older.A few strands of gray now showed at his temples.I had no idea how long I cried. It felt as though I were finally shedding seven years' worth of tears all at once. When I woke again, I was in our bedroom.Daylig

  • Hold Me Before the Sun Goes Down   Chapter 7

Countless times, Luther ended up covered in cuts after I'd attacked him with scissors.Countless nights, he sat alone in the living room smoking while I slept. And eventually, when he looked into my empty eyes, he understood. It wasn't that I couldn't move on.I didn't want to.I'd locked myself inside May 14.Inside the last day when I still believed he was there. So Luther stopped trying to force me back into reality. That night, he sat beside me on the bed as usual and gently stroked my hair. His voice was soft, almost like a sigh.“Okay, Lily. No more treatment.“If you believe we're still living on May 14, then we'll stay on May 14 forever.”From that day on, nothing in our home ever changed. The calendar always showed May 14.Dinner was always the same familiar dishes. He left the house every morning, pretending to go to work, then came back at the same time each day to keep the illusion going for me.There was only one thing he changed.Whenever the false news r

  • Hold Me Before the Sun Goes Down   Chapter 6

Everything I'd thought was strange about Luther these past few days hadn't been my imagination.I'd simply been seeing everything reversed in a mirror. He hadn't suddenly switched from being left-handed to right-handed.The man I'd been watching in the mirror had been moving his left hand all along. The birthmark on the inside of his right thigh hadn't disappeared either. In the reflection, it had simply appeared on his left. And those two strange, overlapping shadows I'd seen on the floor...There had been two Luthers. My head snapped up.I stared at the man standing behind me in the mirror.Outside the mirror, Luther had his arms wrapped gently around me.Inside it, he was holding my reflection in exactly the same way. Then I heard him crying behind me.Hot tears fell against the hollow of my neck, almost burning my skin. His chest shook with broken, desperate sobs.He took my hand and slowly led me out of the office and into the middle of the living room.Somehow, mo

I stared at him, my eyes wide with disbelief, my heart pounding. Was he taunting me?Or was he really that insane?Almost against my better judgment, I raised a trembling finger and dialed 911.Ring.Ring.The call connected almost immediately.“911. What's your emergency?”A calm, professional woman's voice came through the phone. It felt like someone had thrown me a lifeline.I blurted everything out at once.“There's a stranger in my house! He's pretending to be my husband!“My address is Unit XX, Building XX, Valley Heights!”I stumbled through the address, my chest heaving as I waited desperately for a response. But the other end went strangely silent. There was only faint static.Panic surged through me.“Hello? Hello? Why aren't you saying anything?“Can you hear me? I need help!”Finally, the woman spoke again. But something was wrong with her voice now.It sounded distorted, like a recording skipping over itself.“Hello... hello? Ma'am? Can you hear me?”

A scream tore out of me.I jerked my wrist free from Luther's ice-cold grip and stumbled backward. Then I yanked the paring knife from my sleeve and held it in front of my chest. The blade trembled as I pointed it at the shadowy figure before me.“I knew it. I knew it!“You're not Luther! He never eats with his right hand. He has a butterfly-shaped birthmark on the inside of his right thigh, and you don't! He's even an inch taller than you!“You're not him!”My voice cracked with fear.“Who are you? Why are you pretending to be him? What did you do to him? Tell me, or I'll kill you!”My whole body was shaking.I gripped the knife so tightly my knuckles turned white. But in the darkness, Luther only let out a long sigh.He didn't answer me.Instead, he spoke in that same gentle voice that now sent chills down my spine.“Lily, couldn't we just keep living like this?“Why did you have to find out?“Why did you have to fall in love with Luther Miller?“He wasn't as good to

  • Hold Me Before the Sun Goes Down   Chapter 3

After getting his reply, I got up and headed into the kitchen. The TV was still on in the living room, little more than background noise. As I started prepping dinner, I found myself going over all the strange things Luther had been doing lately.I was so lost in thought that I barely noticed when the news anchor suddenly cut in with a breaking report.“Authorities have identified the body of the man who drowned in Lake Yandee last week.“The deceased has been identified as Luther Miller, male...”My mind went completely blank.Behind me, the front door opened quietly. Then Luther's gentle voice drifted in.“Honey, I'm home.”My entire body started shaking.I spun around and pointed the kitchen knife at him.“Who the hell are you?”Luther looked startled. Then he glanced at the television and seemed to understand. He explained that the man on the news merely happened to share his name. The age didn't match.Neither did the occupation. It was just a coincidence.I nod
