The air in the arena tunnel was freezing, but my blood was boiling hot.

I didn't look back as I pushed through the heavy double doors, leaving the bright glare of the ice behind. My sneakers squeaked against the wet concrete floor of the corridor.

I just needed to get to the locker room, grab my duffel bag, and get out of this building before my resolve crumbled.

"Maya! Stop."

The voice was a low, dangerous rumble that echoed off the concrete walls.

Heavy, aggressive footsteps threw the double doors open behind me.

I didn't stop. I forced my legs to move faster, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

A hand caught my upper arm.

It wasn't a gentle touch. It was a firm, inescapable grip that spun me around and pinned my back flat against the cold concrete wall of the tunnel.

Ryder towered over me, still in his full hockey gear. Up close, the sheer size of him was terrifying. The heavy shoulder pads made him look twice as wide, his chest heaving under his jersey as he breathed in sharp, ragged gasps.

"Have you lost your mind?" he growled, his face inches from mine. His eyes were dark, burning with a mix of fury and genuine panic. "State? You’re going to work for those bastards?"

"Let go of me, Ryder," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

"No," he snapped, his grip tightening just enough to let me know he wasn't going anywhere. "Explain it to me. Now. My dad literally pays your tuition, Maya. If you need money, you come to me. You don't sell our playbooks to the one team that wants to ruin us."

"Your dad pays my tuition because he felt guilty!" I yelled, the truth tearing out of my throat before I could stop it. "And I am sick of being your family's charity case. I am sick of watching you..."

My voice cracked. I bit my inner lip, trying to blink away the hot tears threatening to spill over.

Ryder froze. The anger in his eyes suddenly flickered, replaced by something raw, exposed, and deeply pained. His gaze dropped to my mouth, then back up to my eyes.

"Watching me what, Maya?" he whispered, his tone losing its harsh edge, turning dangerously soft. He leaned his forehead down, almost touching mine, his breath warm against my cold skin. "Tell me."

"Watching you pretend you care," I whispered. "While you go back to her."

He let out a low, ragged sound. His hand on my arm slid up, his calloused fingers cupping the side of my neck, his thumb resting right over my racing pulse.

"I have to, Maya," he muttered, his eyes searching mine with a desperation I had never seen in him before. "You don't understand. If I don't stay with Bianca, my father's deal falls through. My entire draft profile..."

"I don't care about your deal, Ryder," I said, pulling my head back to break his touch. "And I don't work for you anymore."

I shoved against his heavy chest. He let me go this time, stepping back with a hollow look on his face.

I turned and walked away, not stopping until I reached the exit.

But as I stepped out into the freezing morning air, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from a restricted number.

Restricted: You think escaping to State will save you, Maya? Ask Ryder about the contract his father signed last week. You're just a pawn to keep him in line.

My blood ran cold.

I stared at the screen, a new, terrifying question locking into my mind.

What did Ryder's father do?

The dining room of the Spence estate felt like a cold, vaulted museum.A crystal chandelier hung from the high ceiling, casting long, sharp prisms of light across a polished mahogany table that could seat twenty people. Soft classical music drifted quietly from hidden ceiling speakers, competing with the muted patter of snow against the double-paned floor-to-ceiling windows.I sat to Mark’s right, wearing a tailored navy silk dress that Mark’s personal stylist had delivered to my guest suite earlier that evening.Beside me, Mark sat with relaxed, golden-boy posture, his dark gray suit jacket unbuttoned, his arm resting casually over the back of my chair. At the head of the table, Richard Spence cut into a rare filet with slow, methodical precision, his silver hair reflecting the warm chandelier light."The conference commissioner confirmed the agenda for nine o'clock tomorrow morning," Richard said, his deep voice effortlessly commanding the room as he set his silver fork down. "The e

The lower library of the Spence estate was silent as a tomb.It was 2:00 AM on Wednesday. Outside the heavy leaded-glass windows, the cold autumn rain had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle that slicked the stone terrace.I stood near the shadow of the massive oak bookshelf, wearing soft fleece pants and an oversized black sweater that swallowed my frame. My bare feet made no sound against the thick Persian rug. In my right hand, I held my encrypted tablet, its screen dimmed to the lowest possible setting. My chest rose and fell in slow, deliberate breaths.Every fifteen minutes, the exterior motion sensors outside the library terrace flickered with a faint green LED sweep. I had spent the last forty-eight hours studying the estate's security schedule—learning the exact three-minute window when the roving night guard cycled through the east garage patrol.I stepped quietly toward Richard Spence’s private mahogany desk. The air smelled of old leather, cigar smoke, and expensive fur

The State Athletics training facility was eerily quiet at 6:00 AM.Outside the high glass windows of the central concourse, a cold autumn rain slicked the asphalt, blurring the distant twin towers of Westbridge across the river. Inside, the only sound was the low hum of the floor buffers and the rhythmic thump-thump of my own heartbeat pounding against my ribs.I stood inside the small tactical observation booth overlooking the empty ice rink.I wore my gray State Athletics fleece over a silk blouse, my hair pulled back into a tight, professional knot. My tablet rested on the high counter beside a half-empty mug of black coffee. On the screen, a series of encrypted system partitions ran silently in the background, pinging the local gateway for any sign of third-party monitoring. The unredacted Spence Holdings ledger—the file I had stolen from Vance's office during Ryder's three-minute window—lay buried beneath three layers of password protection.Five days left.Five days until Ryder’

The Spence family estate in the high hills of Westbridge was a fortress of glass, steel, and pale limestone. It was 1:00 AM.Mark guided me through the grand entryway, his hand resting warm and steady against the small of my back. A uniformed housekeeper stepped forward silently, taking Mark’s blazer and my satchel with a polite bow before vanishing down the hallway."I had the guest wing prepared for you, Maya," Mark said softly, his voice echoing gently off the vaulted marble ceilings. He stood close, his light blue eyes shining with that familiar, golden-boy warmth. "It’s completely private. No reporters, no telephoto lenses, no distractions.""Thank you, Mark," I said, keeping my posture relaxed, forcing my voice to sound soft and genuinely grateful. "Your family’s hospitality is... more than I expected."Mark smiled, a warm, dimpled expression that brightened his entire face. He stepped closer, reaching out to gently adjust the collar of my blazer, his fingers brushing against my

For a heartbeat that felt like an eternity, the press room was suspended in absolute, frozen shock. Then, the silence shattered into a roar of overlapping shouts, flashing cameras, and frantic typing.Mark stood frozen on the elevated stage, his hands hovering inches from my waist. His light blue eyes were wide, his usual calm, impenetrable golden-boy composure momentarily splintered by sheer, unadulterated astonishment. A slow, dark flush crept up his neck, settling into his cheeks as a triumphant, possessive smile spread across his handsome face."Maya..." Mark breathed, his voice barely audible beneath the deafening din of shouting reporters. He didn't hesitate. He stepped into me, his long arms wrapping securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his broad chest in a firm, protective embrace that claimed me in front of every camera lens in the country. He leaned down, pressing his lips against my temple, his breath warm and steady against my skin."You just changed everythi

The blinding glare of flashbulbs transformed the State Athletics media room into a sea of flickering white light.Over fifty journalists sat crammed into the folding chairs, their laptop screens glowing, reporters murmuring frantically into held-up recording devices. Beside me on the elevated stage, Mark stood tall, his posture crisp and relaxed, looking every bit the triumphant captain who had just led his team to a 3-1 victory over their fiercest rival. The heavy mahogany pod-desk sat in front of us, equipped with four black gooseneck microphones.Behind the front row of journalists, standing near the heavy double exit doors, Richard Spence sat in a leather armchair alongside Director Geller. Richard’s face was smooth and relaxed, but his sharp blue eyes were locked onto the stage, monitoring every gesture, every breath."Ladies and gentlemen," the State University media director announced into the podium mic, his voice booming through the overhead speakers.
