Chapter 142

|| Elinda's POV ||

The air inside the palace had been heavy, and my own heart had been even heavier. Mercus's footsteps had run along the hallway before he stood in my room. His face had been pale, his eyes black with concern.

"Elinda…" he had begun, his voice husky, as if the words would break the tenuous silence that surrounded us. "Alexis has been taken. Alberto's men have arrested him."

I had stopped in my tracks, the words cutting through me. "What do you mean, taken?" My voice had shaken with an effort to sound firm. "Where is he now? What happened?"

Mercus's face had grown darker, his eyes flashing in anger, "Alberto had him imprisoned somewhere. They're taking him to the palace. It's a trap. The council's involvement in it had been unmistakable this time."

"Why? Why now?" I had asked, inching closer to him, my breaths growing faster. "Alexis. he hadn't done anything wrong!

Mercus had paused before he spoke, clearly weighed down by the harshness of reality. "It did

    Chapter 144|| ELINDA's POV ||The healer leaned on the edge of the bed, slumping her shoulders and gazing at the floor. She hadn't said a word in several minutes, and I sat patiently, aware that too much intensity would send her into shutdown mode all over again. Finally, after a strained, shaking breath, she began to speak."Kai. he's got my son," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He took him months back. I don't even know where they are keeping him anymore. That is why I did what he told me to do. That is why I placed the spell."I could sense its heaviness weighing me down inside my chest. My fists clenched at my sides. I had believed there was more to it, but hearing her confirm it made it so—and unacceptable."He used you," I breathed, taking a step forward. "He used your love as a mother against you."She nodded, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "He knew I was capable of Spellcraft. He threatened that if I did not obey, if I ever refused, he would."She couldn't go on. He

    Chapter 143|| Alexis's POV ||The air in the dungeon smelt of mold and rusted metal. My wrists were bruised from the cold metal encircling me like a curse, and the stone beneath me sucked all heat from my body. My mind thudded with weakness, my body icy from the position I had been held in for hours, or perhaps days. Time meant nothing to me. But what plagued me more than pain or darkness was the question—what would Elinda do now to save me?Would she even try?I tried to wash the doubt away, but it clung to me stubbornly.The last thing I wanted was for her to keep hurting because of me. But deep inside of me, a weak hope whispered anyway—She'll come. She has to.The thud of footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. I straightened up, my heart racing. The clanking of heavy boots grew louder, then ceased. I listened to keys entered into the lock door.Three men emerged, towering, masked, and intimidating. I recognized them at a glance. They were the council's dogs, loyal who were t

    || CHAPTER 141 |||| ALEXIS'S POV ||No matter how many times Mercus and I reviewed the surveillance tapes, interrogated guards, or pursued leads, we made zero progress. It was as if the mole among us vanished into thin air.The more dead ends we hit, the more failure's burning heat seeped into my heart.I couldn't continue this. I couldn't risk another breach.And so, when the opportunity to broker a trade with the Shallow Creek Pack arose, I made a decision."You're the heir of the Alpha," he had growled. "You don't fly trade goods like a damn worker boy.""I also don't sit idly by and allow someone to bleed us dry for us ," I snapped, shutting the truck's rear latch. "I'll do it myself. Fewer hands, fewer opportunities for frame me."Eventually, Mercus agreed in, but not before leaving a bad taste in my mouth. We left together for the border, but when we neared the drop point, Mercus noticed something unusual on the eastern border. He went to check, leaving me to watch the truck and

    CHAPTER 140 || ALBERTO'S POV ||I didn't remember when exactly the walls started to close in—but they had, slowly and suffocatingly. The walls of my bedroom were creeping in on me, and the shadows were darker than they should be. They whispered her name. Clara. Her memory wasn't haunting me as much as suffocating me. Her scent remained on the sheets. Her laughter echoed in the silence. Even the damn curtains reminded me of the dress she'd worn the night we'd first danced under the moonlight.I couldn't breathe. I needed air.So I went and did what broken men do. I ran from the scene of my reminder of what I'd lost. Without a word to a soul, I snuck out of the pack house, my jacket slung over one shoulder, and my pain streamed behind me in the wind. The bar stood in front of me for the broken. Its neon sign glowed overhead, bathing the sidewalk in its dull pink light. It was warm and dark inside, filled with laughter I couldn't share. I sat alone at the other end, away from couples

    Chapter 139|| ALEXIS'S POV ||My door knocked early—too early for anything good. Mercus pushed his way in before I could even make him come in. His face was white, his jaw clenched." You need to see this," he said, clutching a tablet.I pulled back the curtain, letting in the sickly pale grey of dawn. It was security cam footage. I blinked watching our Beta—Jonas—arrive in the transport yard at midnight.He wasn't where he was supposed to be.The video caught him opening the rear of the truck, which had been wedged with Lycan blood vials. My gut plummeted as he reached into his cloak and stashed something among the other crates."Son of a—"I never got to continue. I was furious. I stormed out of the room."Where is he?" I commanded.Mercus stood in behind me. "He's been instructed to be in his quarter. I checked twice."I didn't hesitate to respond. I climbed the stairs two at a time, boots thudding against the chilly floor. The cold of the morning did not disturb me. Jonas had be
