Chapter One

Benson

As I sit here at the window, behind the long shaft of my rifle, waiting for the unlucky man to exit his apartment building, I’m flashing back to how life was before I got here.  How many years I spent before now behind a similar shaft, taking those shots as no one else could.  Country after country, city after city, shot after shot.  I have so many notches on my belt, is it something to be proud of?  As an ex-military sniper, yes, why yes it is.

I glance up from the scope, taking notice of everything going on around, why is this fool not exiting the building?  I was given exact location, precise time, direct instructions all with advance pay to get the job done.  I’m a highly recommended hitman for hire in the metropolitan area.

I hear a little commotion and look down through the scope, I do not see him.  I move my head over to take better notice.  A group of ladies walking down the sidewalk.  “Hurry up women, pass.”  I think to myself out loud.

I place my eye back on the scope and concentrate as the door opens to the apartment building.  The moment has come, is it him?

YES.  Finally.  The man, in a black winter button up coat, black jeans and a ballcap, emerges from the building.  I zoom in, scope locked onto my eye, my finger gripping the trigger.  He turns his head as he steps down off of the brownstone stoop.  My grip becomes tighter as I pull the trigger, taking the shot.

I hear screaming as I look up from the scope, out the window.  The ladies who were walking down the sidewalk have come upon the man’s lifeless body at the bottom of his Williamsburg brownstone steps.

I dismantle my rifle, place it back into my bag and head off as my duty is done.  The fact that I just took out one of the biggest names in Williamsburg, in New York City, it has been quite the accomplishment.

I walk into my apartment, place my keys onto the table by the door and gently put my sniper back into my closet, ready for my next call.  I glance around, quite the accomplishment I have for myself here.  I have everything that I have ever dreamed of.  Well, maybe not everything.

Active duty in the military took so much of my life that I didn’t really stay in one spot for too long.  Being stationed in one city, departing to the next as I blink an eye I never really had the chance to find love.  I guess that’s probably why my lifestyle right now is easy for me to adapt to and not really care that I just unalived someone.

What will happen when I actually let my guard down and let a woman enter my life?  Will she accept what I do?  Will I have to keep it a secret?  Who knows, but right now, I’m enjoying my life.

As I sit on the couch and crack open a bottle of beer, I turn on the television.  As I flip through a few channels, I come across the nightly news.  This should be fun, let’s have a watch.

“New York City is in mourning tonight with the death of William White.  Mr. White was shot down leaving his apartment building a little while ago.  The police are reaching out to the general public for any knowledge of this heinous act of violence.”  Wow, that was by far the best news piece that one of my unalivings got.

A smile came over my face knowing that my duty is done.  I glance down at my phone that just beeped.  A text came across my screen, done.

I walk over to the window that looks out over the metropolitan of New York City, enjoying my view for this evening.  I wonder if my future wife is out there thinking of me tonight?

Andie

I’m finally getting ready to close up shop tonight, it’s been a long day.  Usually my days are filled with customers and all, tonight just hit different.  Across the street, a man was murdered.  The police have shut the street down, no entrance, I was recommended to close up as they would be there quite awhile.  I was even questioned!  Did they even buy juice?  Nah, that would have been too nice.

After shutting everything off, I exit the front door and lock up.  I can still see the man’s lifeless body laying on the ground.  Why would anyone even do this?  No one deserves to die, especially this way.

I work in quite the most interesting part of New York City, in Williamsburg, but thankfully the area in which I live is quite a bit different.  So much nicer.  I live in a nice brownstone in Brooklyn Heights overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline, the general chaos of the city that never sleeps.  I love New York City, I love it all, would I ever leave this for a quieter life?  Who knows.

I’m just living the single life.  I have my own very successful juice bar, I have my own apartment, and a close knit friends group.  What don’t I have?

My heart yearns daily for what I don’t have.  A love, a boyfriend, a husband, someone to call mine.  It’s okay though, someday.

As I get off the subway and walk the two blocks to my apartment building, I can’t help but think of the man who lost his life tonight.  Why?  Who could literally be that lifeless themselves to do that to another human?  I passed the door man, which tonight I’m even more thankful for.  He provides us security, safety in our homes.  I couldn’t imagine some days and nights without knowing we have him, and the other men who keep us safe.

I enter my apartment and pour myself a glass of wine.  I walk over to the window and gaze out into the view.  This, I don’t think I could ever give up.  I’ve dreamt of this view all my life, and now I’m here, I have it.  I love it.

I stand here sipping my wine as more and more lights start to light up in the city as the sun begins to set.  Some day I will be able to enjoy this with my husband.  I wonder if he’s out there!
