Chapter 3

作者: Zach Bookman
Donald’s expression turned ugly.

“Two hundred thousand dollars? You must be dreaming!”

He strode over, snatched up the empty candle box, and hurled it to the ground.

“Do you think putting on this ridiculous spectacle will make me see you differently? You’re just trying to get my attention, aren’t you?”

I said nothing and watched him perform in silence.

“Let me make this clear. You can forget about me! Lisa is gentler than you, more understanding than you, and she’s…”

“Poorer than me,” I interrupted.

Donald choked. “What did you say?”

“I said Lisa is poorer than me.”

I pulled out my phone, opened my banking app, and shoved the balance in his face.

“Look. Two hundred thousand dollars. It’s not much, but it’s enough to buy your life.”

Donald stared at the screen, his eyes widening. “How is this possible? Where did you get that money?”

“What does it have to do with you?”

“Did you steal it?” Donald seized on the accusation. “Mom! Call the police! Her money clearly came from somewhere illegal!”

“Don, maybe we should let it go…”

Lisa grabbed his arm, her eyes brimming with tears. “If Suzy really gets arrested, she’ll lose everything. That would be so awful for her.”

I let out a cold laugh.

Donald immediately dialed the police.

“Hello, police? I’d like to report something. My ex-girlfriend is setting up some kind of candle ritual outside my home, and she’s carrying a huge amount of unexplained money… Yes, we’re downstairs at Parkview Apartments, Building Three.”

After hanging up, he looked at me smugly. “Suzy, just wait.”

“There’s nothing to explain. It’s all legitimate income.” I crouched down again, picked up the crushed candle box, folded it flat, and tucked it into my bag.

At that moment, Rachel appeared with a garden hose. She turned on the tap and sprayed the spot where I had been lighting the candles.

“Get rid of this bad luck! Wash it all away!”

The icy stream sprayed directly onto my calves, soaking them in an instant.

“Suzy, your clothes are wet. Do you want to go upstairs and change?” Lisa covered her mouth as she laughed.

“No need. A little water won’t put out my fire.” I stared coldly at them.

Ten minutes later, a police car arrived with its siren blaring.

“Who called the police?”

“Officer, it was me!” Donald shouted.

“That woman was lighting black candles outside my home in the middle of the night and threatening to burn me alive! She has two hundred thousand dollars of unexplained money. It has to be stolen!”

The officer looked at me, then at the scattered candles on the ground. “Is that true?”

“Officer, he’s making false accusations. I was lighting candles, but I did it in an open area, away from anything flammable.

“As for the two hundred thousand dollars, it came from legitimate investment returns. I have the transaction records to prove it.”

“That’s bullshit!”

Donald panicked. “She’s just a regular wage worker! Where would she get two hundred thousand dollars in investment returns?”

I handed my phone to the officer and pulled up my bank statements and investment records.

The officer examined them carefully for a while.

“This is legitimate income.”

He returned my phone and turned to Donald. “You understand that making a false police report can have legal consequences?”

Donald froze, his face flushing red.

Lisa quickly tried to smooth things over. “Officer, it may have been a misunderstanding. Don was just worried about everyone’s safety. Please don’t blame him.”

“All right. If it was a misunderstanding, settle it between yourselves. And be more careful with the candles in the future. Use them only in designated areas.”

After the officer gave us a brief warning, he got back into his car and drove away.

Donald finally lost his temper. “Suzy! What kind of trick did you pull?”

He rushed over and reached for my collar.

I kicked the hose beside me, sending a powerful stream of water straight into Donald’s face.

“Cough, cough… You!”

“Donald, I’m warning you. Don’t provoke me.”

I stared at him, my voice icy. “Otherwise, you’ll be the next thing I burn.”

After Lisa left, Donald was completely broken. He stopped lighting candles and gave up trying to fight back. Every day, he lay in that run-down apartment and waited for the court to summon him.I couldn’t be bothered to care. I collected rent and counted my money every day, enjoying a comfortable life.A month later, Donald suddenly came to see me.“Suzy, I want to talk to you.” He stood outside my door, gaunt and haggard, but his eyes were clear.“About what?” I leaned against the doorframe.“About this building.” Donald took a deep breath. “I want to buy it back.”“Buy it back?” I laughed. “Do you have the money?”“I do.” Donald pulled out a document and handed it to me.“I sold an old mining operation out west. The deal was worth ten million dollars.”I stared at him. Where had he gotten a mine?“It was an inheritance from my grandfather.” Donald seemed to notice my confusion.“I never touched it before. But now, I have to use it to buy this building back.”“Why?”“There’s someth

Donald kept a low profile over the next few days. The embezzlement case had probably left him overwhelmed, leaving him no time to come after me.But I didn’t let my guard down. The system gave me money, but it also gave me a mission. The system displayed a notification: [Spend two million dollars within seven days, or an equivalent amount of your lifespan will be deducted.]Making money was difficult, but spending it wasn’t easy either.I went on a shopping spree, viewed houses, bought a car, and splurged on luxury goods. But as someone who had always been frugal, I found it incredibly difficult to spend two million dollars.Real estate transactions were especially complicated, and there was no way to complete one in just a few days.I grew frantic. That was when Donald showed up at my door again. This time, he had come to beg for help.“Suzy, please save me!” He knelt outside my door and begged desperately. “The company is suing me, and Lisa ran off with the last of my money. I real

The next morning, I woke up naturally. My phone showed dozens of missed calls, all from Donald.I ignored them, blocked his number, and opened my banking app. When I saw the two million dollars in my account, my mood instantly improved.I was about to treat myself to a nice meal when the doorbell rang.I opened the door and found Donald standing outside with a crutch. His face was pale, his eyes were sunken, and he looked ten years older overnight.“Suzy, you finally opened the door.” His eyes reddened, and he nearly burst into tears. “You blocked my number. I spent the entire night looking for you.”“What do you want?” I leaned against the doorframe.“I’ve thought things through.” Donald took a deep breath. “I was wrong yesterday. Lisa is too vain. I’ve already broken up with her.”“So?”“Let’s get back together.” Donald looked at me expectantly.“Suzy, I know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have lit all those candles outside my home. Just give me half of yo

After the security guard lit one candle, he gazed at me eagerly.“Well? Does it work?”I transferred twenty dollars to him.“It works. Consider it a blessing.”The guard stared at the twenty dollars that had appeared in his account. It was less than he’d hoped for, but he had earned it without lifting a finger, and he grinned from ear to ear.“Then… Can I light a few more?”“No.” I put my phone away. “There’s a limited number of spots. You can only light one candle a day. Light more than that, and it won’t work.”The guard looked disappointed but obediently stepped aside and helped keep the crowd under control.By then, Donald was completely hooked. The candles in his hands were running out, but the money in his account kept piling up.“Suzy, we’re out of candles! Give me more!” He frantically reached toward me.“Out? Then I suppose we’re done for tonight.” I pretended to pack up.“Wait! I want to keep going!” Donald panicked and grabbed my hand. “I still need to earn more money! I

“Suzy, you lunatic! Stop it right now!”Donald shook Lisa awake, then turned and saw me still lighting black candles carved with his name. He looked ready to break down.He rushed over and tried to grab the metal tray, but I shouted at him.“Donald, I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.” I waved the lighter in my hand. “Take one more step, and I’ll light the entire box in your name.”“You… What are you trying to do?” Donald’s voice trembled, and he didn’t dare come any closer.“Make money.” I didn’t even look up as I lit another candle.“You were wondering why I insisted on doing this here? The cashback rate is higher in this spot.”“What the hell does cashback have to do with anything? Can you speak normally?” Donald clutched his hair in frustration.“It’s simple. Every twenty cents I spend on candles here earns me two thousand dollars. The more I light, the more I make.”I looked up and smiled at him. “So, I should thank you. If you hadn’t cheated on me, I would never have discovered

Donald felt a chill run through him at my laughter and took a step back.“What are you laughing at? You’re about to be arrested, and you can still laugh?” He gripped my phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.“Officer, she’s openly taunting the law! She needs to be punished!”The lead officer frowned.“We can’t unlock the phone. Take it back to the station and have the tech unit examine it.”“Don’t bother,” I said calmly. “The passcode is 0824.”Donald froze. “0824? That’s my birthday.”He entered the code, and the screen lit up.Donald eagerly opened my photo gallery and notes, hoping to find evidence that I was laundering money or mentally unstable. The next second, all the color drained from his face.“What… What is this?” he stammered, turning the screen toward the officers. The screen showed photo after photo of black candles marked with Donald’s name and date of birth. Each candle was covered in vicious commands written in red marker. Some read, “Die Donald Turner,” whil
