ANMELDENAlaric’s POV
I stood at the window of the guest chambers overlooking the Hollow Fall estate. The moon cast long shadows across the grounds. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin. This inspection was supposed to be routine. Verify tributes. Assess loyalty. Yet from the moment I arrived nothing felt routine. Especially not the bold young woman who had challenged me in the courtyard.
Serena. Her name echoed in my mind. She had fire, real fire. Not the calculated obedience most Alphas surrounded themselves with. Her defiance stirred something I had not felt in years. But I could not afford distractions. Not with the shadows of the past still hunting me.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
"Enter," I commanded.
My advisor Marcus stepped inside. He bowed low. His silver hair gleamed under the lantern light. "My King, the preliminary reports from the inspection are ready. Alpha Grey’s accounts show inconsistencies. Small enough to dismiss but troubling when viewed together."
I turned from the window. "I expected as much. Grey is a weak leader. Desperate men make mistakes. What else?"
Marcus hesitated. "There is more my King. Whispers among the servants. Grey has been gambling heavily. He plans to marry off his hidden daughter to settle debts. The older one Serena mentioned ties to Thornblood. It appears she was telling the truth."
I clenched my jaw. "Kieran would love this. My stepbrother always thrived on chaos. He taught me that lesson well."
Marcus’s eyes softened with understanding. "You think of him often lately."
"How can I not?" I replied. My voice grew low. "Kieran was more than my stepbrother. He was my closest confidant. We trained together. Fought together. Built the foundations of this kingdom side by side. Then he betrayed me. He sold our secrets to the rogue factions. He tried to assassinate me during the Blood Moon Council. All for a taste of power he believed should be his."
Marcus nodded. "The wound still festers."
"It does," I admitted. I paced the room. "That is why I inspect packs like Hollow Fall personally. Weakness invites betrayal. If Grey is compromised like Kieran was then this territory becomes a vulnerability. I will not allow another fracture in my realm."
I stopped near the table where maps of the region lay spread out. "Serena. She carries real anger. Real pain. Her accusations against both Grey and the Thornblood Alpha may be the key to uncovering a larger threat. I sensed no lie in her words. Only desperation."
Marcus cleared his throat. "She is striking. And brave. Few would dare speak against their Alpha in front of you."
"Bravery or foolishness," I said. A faint smile touched my lips. "Either way she intrigues me. Her eyes held no fear. Only resolve. If her evidence proves true I may have a use for her."
A heavy silence fell between us. I poured myself a glass of wine but barely touched it. Memories of Kieran flooded back. The night of his betrayal replayed in my mind. The dagger aimed at my heart. The cold smile on his face as he revealed his alliance with rogues. I had spared his life but banished him. Some days I regretted that mercy.
"My King," Marcus said carefully. "There is something else. During the records review my team found references to an old sealed treaty. It is buried deep in the Obsidian archives. The document is tied directly to House Hollowfall. It dates back centuries. Something about blood rights and forbidden alliances."
I set the glass down hard. "A sealed treaty? Why was this not brought to my attention before?"
"It was classified at the highest level," Marcus replied. "Only a few know of its existence. The treaty mentions a specific bloodline within Hollow Fall. One that carries ancient power. If Grey has hidden knowledge of this it could explain his desperation. And why he kept Serena’s sister concealed."
My wolf surged forward. Power hummed through my veins. "This changes everything. If the treaty grants special rights or contains dangerous clauses it could destabilize the entire region. We need to access those archives immediately."
Marcus bowed. "I can arrange it by morning. But my King there is a risk. Opening sealed treaties often awakens old enemies. Kieran himself sought similar documents before his betrayal."
The mention of my stepbrother sent a growl rumbling in my chest. "Let him come. If Kieran is connected to this I will end what I started years ago. No more mercy."
I walked back to the window. Below I could see Serena and her sister moving quietly through the gardens. Even from this distance her presence commanded attention. She was no ordinary wolf. There was strength in her. A quiet fury that matched my own.
"Bring Serena to me at first light," I ordered. "I want to hear her full story. And prepare a team for the archives. We have to unseal this treaty tomorrow."
Marcus hesitated at the door. "My King, if the treaty binds Hollow Fall to something darker we may face war."
"Then we prepare for war," I said firmly. "I did not build this kingdom by avoiding shadows. Kieran taught me that much. Now I will use his lessons against any who threaten what is mine."
As Marcus left the room I remained staring into the night. The pieces were falling into place. Grey’s weakness. Serena’s defiance. The hidden treaty. All of it pointed to something larger. A conspiracy perhaps. Or an opportunity.
My wolf howled inside me. It sensed the hunt beginning. Serena had lit the spark. Now I would fan it into a blaze that would consume every secret in this territory.
I touched the scar on my chest where Kieran’s dagger had once struck. The wound had healed but the memory never faded. Betrayal had shaped me into the King I was today. Unyielding, vigilant and alone.
But tonight for the first time in years I felt something shift. A connection and a possibility. Serena’s eyes had held more than defiance. They held the truth. And perhaps something more.
The Obsidian archives waited. The sealed treaty waited. And with them answers that could change everything.
I turned from the window. Sleep would not come easily tonight. The hunt had begun. And I intended to see it through to the end.
Serena’s POVAfter the confrontation in the great hall I could not sit still. Caden’s words still burned in my ears. His public attempt to break me had only strengthened my resolve. I would not let Penelope suffer the same fate I had endured. I would find leverage to save her myself even if it meant risking everything inside my father’s own home.I paced the narrow corridor outside my chamber. Penelope slept uneasily in the room behind me. Her future hung by a thread and I refused to let my father cut it.Gale appeared from the shadows. His footsteps were silent as always. "My lady the King has retired for the night but tensions remain high. Caden and Liliana have been given guest quarters. They are watching everything."I nodded. "Good. Let them watch. I am done hiding Gale. I need to find something concrete. Something that forces my father’s hand before he can sell Penelope off."Gale glanced down the hall. "I have heard rumors from the servants. Hidden documents in Alpha Grey’s pri
Serena’s POVThe great hall buzzed with tension as the morning session of the inspection continued. I stood near the back with Penelope trying to remain invisible while Alaric questioned my father about tribute records. Every word Grey spoke felt like a lie wrapped in silk. I kept my head high but my heart raced. The pages from the ledger burned in my pocket like a promise of justice.Suddenly the main doors burst open. Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone floor. I turned and my blood ran cold.Caden strode in like he owned the hall. Liliana walked beside him one hand resting dramatically on her rounded belly. She looked every bit the fragile expecting mate glowing with false innocence. Caden’s eyes scanned the room until they locked onto me. A cruel smirk spread across his face."What is the meaning of this?" my father demanded though his voice wavered. "This is a private royal inspection."Caden ignored him completely. He bowed slightly toward Alaric. "My King I apologize for th

Serena’s POVThe silence in the courtyard was heavy, thick enough to choke on. My father looked as if he might faint. His eyes darted frantically between the Lycan King and me. His face was a mask of pure terror. Alaric remained perfectly still. His eyes scanned me with a cold detached indifference that made my skin prickle."Grey," Alaric said. His voice was deep and smooth like a stone rolling over gravel. He did not take his eyes off me. "I was not aware that your servants were permitted to stand in the driveway during a royal inspection. Have your help cleared away at once."I felt a surge of hot bitter anger. I stepped forward. My boots crunched loudly on the gravel. "I am not a servant," I said. My voice was sharp and clear, cutting through the tense air of the courtyard.Alaric finally shifted his gaze slightly. One dark eyebrow arched in surprise. "No?" he asked. His tone was mocking. "Then you must be the most daring housemaid in the history of Hollow Fall to interrupt a King
Serena’s POVThe entire estate was screaming with noise and panic. Servants were scurrying like ants polishing silver that was already clean and frantically fixing stones that were already level. My father was everywhere at once, his face red with stress barking orders that changed every five seconds. He treated the pack like a broken machine he was trying to hide before the master came to inspect it."You stay here," my father spat at me and Penelope in the nursery. He had locked us in the east wing hours ago. "You are damaged goods Serena. A disgraced ex mate. If the King sees you he will know I have lost control of my own blood. You stay out of sight or I will make sure you never see the light of day again."He slammed the door and the lock clicked into place with a final heavy sound. Penelope began to cry. Her shoulders shook in the dim light. I ignored her tears. My mind raced. I walked to the window watching the long driveway that stretched toward the horizon. If the King was co
Serena’s POVThe silence in the room was suffocating, punctuated only by Penelope’s jagged breathing. I sat on the floor beside her holding her hand. Her skin was ice cold, a stark reminder of the terror my father had instilled in her. Looking at her I did not see a stranger. I saw myself three years ago trapped, silenced and waiting for a rescue that never came."I can not go through with it Serena," Penelope sobbed. Her head rested on her knees. "He says I am lucky. He says a marriage to that monster will secure the pack's future. He does not care if I die.""You are not going to marry him," I said. My voice was firm. I felt a surge of protectiveness that was entirely new to me. "I was a pawn for too long letting men like Grey and Caden decide my worth. I will not let you become the next sacrifice on their altar of greed."Penelope looked at me. Her eyes were red rimmed. "Why are you helping me? I am just a mistake remember?"I brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. "You are my
