Serena’s POV

The great hall buzzed with tension as the morning session of the inspection continued. I stood near the back with Penelope trying to remain invisible while Alaric questioned my father about tribute records.

Every word Grey spoke felt like a lie wrapped in silk. I kept my head high but my heart raced. The pages from the ledger burned in my pocket like a promise of justice.

Suddenly the main doors burst open. Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone floor. I turned and my blood ran cold.

Caden strode in like he owned the hall. Liliana walked beside him one hand resting dramatically on her rounded belly. She looked every bit the fragile expecting mate glowing with false innocence. Caden’s eyes scanned the room until they locked onto me. A cruel smirk spread across his face.

"What is the meaning of this?" my father demanded though his voice wavered. "This is a private royal inspection."

Caden ignored him completely. He bowed slightly toward Alaric. "My King I apologize for the unannounced arrival but when I heard you were inspecting Hollow Fall I knew I must come. After all, our packs share deep ties. Especially through my former mate."

Alaric’s gaze sharpened. "Former mate?"

"Yes, Your Majesty," Caden said loudly. He pulled Liliana closer. His hand covered hers over her belly in an obvious display. "Serena was my Luna for three years. A placeholder really. She could not fulfill the bond. But the goddess blessed me with my true fated mate Liliana. As you can see she carries my heir."

Gasps rippled through the gathered wolves. I felt every eye turn to me. Heat burned my cheeks but I refused to look away. Penelope gripped my arm tightly.

Liliana smiled sweetly though her eyes gleamed with malice. "It is an honor to meet you, my King. I only wish we could have met under better circumstances. Poor Serena has been through so much. Returning home disgraced like this must be difficult."

Caden stepped forward. His voice carried across the hall. "Serena I did not expect to see you here flaunting yourself before the King. Still causing trouble I see. Some things never change."

I stepped out from the shadows. My voice rang clear. "Trouble? I am here to expose the truth, Caden. Your crimes. The embezzlement. The rogue gold. Everything."

Caden laughed. The sound was sharp and mocking. "Crimes? You stole documents and ran like a thief. Liliana and I have built a strong future together. The pack is thriving without you. Look at her. She carries the next Alpha. Something you could never do."

The words hit like blows but I stood tall. "You discarded me for power and lies. Now you parade her here to humiliate me. How pathetic."

Liliana placed a hand on Caden’s arm. "Darling, do not be cruel. Serena is clearly still hurt. We should show mercy."

"Mercy?" Caden sneered. He looked straight at me. "You had three years as my Luna Serena. You were weak. Useless. Now you return crawling back to your father’s house. Soon you will crawl back to me too. Once the King sees how unstable you are he will understand. You belong at Thornblood. On your knees where you always were."

Whispers erupted around us. My father looked furious but stayed silent. Penelope trembled beside me.

Before I could respond Alaric rose from his seat. His presence filled the entire hall. "Enough."

The room fell silent instantly.

Alaric’s eyes moved between Caden and me. His jaw tightened visibly. The muscle ticked in a way that surprised even him. I caught the flicker of something dark and possessive in his gaze. It sent a shiver down my spine.

"Caden of Thornblood," Alaric said. His voice was calm but carried deadly authority. "You arrive uninvited and interrupt my inspection to publicly shame a woman who has shown more courage in one morning than you have displayed in your entire life. Explain yourself."

Caden bowed deeply. "My King, I only speak the truth. Serena was my mate. She failed. Liliana succeeded where she could not. I thought you should know the full story before judging Hollow Fall."

Alaric stepped down from the dais. He moved with predatory grace. "The full story? Or your version of it? I have seen evidence today that suggests your pack has its own secrets. Rogue alliances. Hidden accounts. You come here flaunting a pregnant mate while accusing others of weakness. Interesting."

Liliana’s smile faltered slightly. Caden’s face reddened.

"Your Majesty," Caden began. "Serena is confused. She stole important documents. She"

"Documents that prove your crimes," I interrupted. "I have more if needed."

Alaric raised a hand. "I will decide what is proven. Caden you will remain for questioning. Serena your courage is noted. Do not let this man diminish you."

Caden’s eyes narrowed at me. "This is not over Serena. You will come back. You always do. Without me you are nothing."

I met his gaze steadily. "I was never nothing Caden. You only made me believe I was. Those days are gone."

Liliana tugged at Caden’s sleeve. "Come darling. We should not disturb the King further."

But Alaric was not finished. His jaw remained tight. The tension in his posture surprised even his own advisor who watched from the side.

"Interesting reaction," Alaric murmured so quietly only I seemed to hear. His eyes met mine for a brief intense moment.

My father tried to smooth things over. "My King, please forgive this disruption. Caden is simply concerned about pack relations."

"Concerned?" Alaric repeated coldly. "Or threatened? We will continue this inspection. All parties will remain available. No one leaves until I have answers."

As the hall settled into uneasy silence I felt a shift. Caden’s attempt to humiliate me had backfired. Instead it drew Alaric’s attention more sharply. Penelope squeezed my hand.

"You stood up to him," she whispered. "In front of everyone."

"I had to," I replied softly. "For both of us."

Caden glared at me from across the room. Liliana whispered something in his ear but his eyes never left me. The public humiliation he planned had turned into something else entirely. A challenge. And for the first time I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

Alaric’s jaw tightened again as he glanced my way. That small involuntary reaction sent warmth through my chest. The King was not indifferent. Not anymore.

The real battle had only just begun.

Serena’s POVAfter the confrontation in the great hall I could not sit still. Caden’s words still burned in my ears. His public attempt to break me had only strengthened my resolve. I would not let Penelope suffer the same fate I had endured. I would find leverage to save her myself even if it meant risking everything inside my father’s own home.I paced the narrow corridor outside my chamber. Penelope slept uneasily in the room behind me. Her future hung by a thread and I refused to let my father cut it.Gale appeared from the shadows. His footsteps were silent as always. "My lady the King has retired for the night but tensions remain high. Caden and Liliana have been given guest quarters. They are watching everything."I nodded. "Good. Let them watch. I am done hiding Gale. I need to find something concrete. Something that forces my father’s hand before he can sell Penelope off."Gale glanced down the hall. "I have heard rumors from the servants. Hidden documents in Alpha Grey’s pri

Alaric’s POVI stood at the window of the guest chambers overlooking the Hollow Fall estate. The moon cast long shadows across the grounds. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin. This inspection was supposed to be routine. Verify tributes. Assess loyalty. Yet from the moment I arrived nothing felt routine. Especially not the bold young woman who had challenged me in the courtyard.Serena. Her name echoed in my mind. She had fire, real fire. Not the calculated obedience most Alphas surrounded themselves with. Her defiance stirred something I had not felt in years. But I could not afford distractions. Not with the shadows of the past still hunting me.A soft knock sounded at the door. "Enter," I commanded. My advisor Marcus stepped inside. He bowed low. His silver hair gleamed under the lantern light. "My King, the preliminary reports from the inspection are ready. Alpha Grey’s accounts show inconsistencies. Small enough to dismiss but troubling when viewed together."I turned fro

Serena’s POVThe silence in the courtyard was heavy, thick enough to choke on. My father looked as if he might faint. His eyes darted frantically between the Lycan King and me. His face was a mask of pure terror. Alaric remained perfectly still. His eyes scanned me with a cold detached indifference that made my skin prickle."Grey," Alaric said. His voice was deep and smooth like a stone rolling over gravel. He did not take his eyes off me. "I was not aware that your servants were permitted to stand in the driveway during a royal inspection. Have your help cleared away at once."I felt a surge of hot bitter anger. I stepped forward. My boots crunched loudly on the gravel. "I am not a servant," I said. My voice was sharp and clear, cutting through the tense air of the courtyard.Alaric finally shifted his gaze slightly. One dark eyebrow arched in surprise. "No?" he asked. His tone was mocking. "Then you must be the most daring housemaid in the history of Hollow Fall to interrupt a King

Serena’s POVThe entire estate was screaming with noise and panic. Servants were scurrying like ants polishing silver that was already clean and frantically fixing stones that were already level. My father was everywhere at once, his face red with stress barking orders that changed every five seconds. He treated the pack like a broken machine he was trying to hide before the master came to inspect it."You stay here," my father spat at me and Penelope in the nursery. He had locked us in the east wing hours ago. "You are damaged goods Serena. A disgraced ex mate. If the King sees you he will know I have lost control of my own blood. You stay out of sight or I will make sure you never see the light of day again."He slammed the door and the lock clicked into place with a final heavy sound. Penelope began to cry. Her shoulders shook in the dim light. I ignored her tears. My mind raced. I walked to the window watching the long driveway that stretched toward the horizon. If the King was co

Serena’s POVThe silence in the room was suffocating, punctuated only by Penelope’s jagged breathing. I sat on the floor beside her holding her hand. Her skin was ice cold, a stark reminder of the terror my father had instilled in her. Looking at her I did not see a stranger. I saw myself three years ago trapped, silenced and waiting for a rescue that never came."I can not go through with it Serena," Penelope sobbed. Her head rested on her knees. "He says I am lucky. He says a marriage to that monster will secure the pack's future. He does not care if I die.""You are not going to marry him," I said. My voice was firm. I felt a surge of protectiveness that was entirely new to me. "I was a pawn for too long letting men like Grey and Caden decide my worth. I will not let you become the next sacrifice on their altar of greed."Penelope looked at me. Her eyes were red rimmed. "Why are you helping me? I am just a mistake remember?"I brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. "You are my
