Chapter 1

The cold from the metal seeped into my palm. It'd been three years since I'd last touched something this sharp. It'd been far too long.

For the past three years, the only things allowed to appear in my world had blunt rounded edges. I could only eat with a soft, plastic spoon. Whenever my fingernails grew out, Mom would personally use a nail file to grind them down.

Even when I showered, the bathroom door had to remain open so they could check on me at any moment and make sure I was safe.

But Mom had just stuffed a knife right into my hand.

The guests' bright laughter and cheerful conversation filled the house. I could hear them offering toasts and well-wishes.

No one paid any attention to me.

I looked down at the knife. I should put it back—put it back on the fruit platter and pretend none of this had ever happened. My hand lifted a little before hanging in the air.

I heard Jessica Stewart, my older sister, laughing happily in the living room. She was going around, chatting with the guests, looking positively radiant.

She'd already had to take time off school to look after me, her mentally ill brother. She'd missed out on the best years of her youth. Now that she was getting married and starting a family of her own, she could finally be free of the burden that I'd become.

As I took in the celebratory mood all around the house, I felt like scum. I was the only stain in this picture. Just by standing here, I was polluting the air, making it heavy and suffocating.

Mom was right. I shouldn't be having a depressive episode today of all days. I shouldn't be ruining things for Jess. I shouldn't even be alive.

Tightening my grip on the handle, I went back to my bedroom. I moved through the house slowly. No one noticed me.

They were all too busy celebrating the happy couple. Who would bother to keep an eye on what a mentally ill person was doing?

Once I got back to my room, I gently closed the door, cutting off the noise outside.

I leaned against the padded wall. Slowly, my body slid down until I collapsed onto the rug. I raised the knife and held it against my neck. My hand trembled violently.

I wasn't afraid to die. On the contrary, I was pretty excited. It was the physical exhilaration of finally breaking free of my shackles and achieving true freedom.

Over the past three years, I'd fantasized about dying countless times. I'd thought about jumping into a river, hanging myself, or overdosing on pills. But every time, they found me, and it brought about even stricter supervision and hysterical sobbing.

"What do you want from us, Jon? Are you trying to kill your poor mother, too?"

"Jonathan Stewart! We've sacrificed everything for you! Your life doesn't belong to you alone. It belongs to the entire family! How can you be so selfish?"

"Jon, please, I'm begging you. Don't do anything stupid, okay? Mom and Dad are getting older. They can't take much more of this emotional distress…"

That day, I would finally be free.

I heard the voice in my head. "Mom, you're the one who wants me to die. You gave me the knife yourself, so I'll do as you say."

The sharp blade pressed against my skin, and my wrist thrust forward forcefully. Warm liquid immediately gushed out.

I opened my eyes.

Blood had splattered across the walls and floor, looking like blooming red flowers.

How beautiful it was.

My strength drained out with the blood. I lay collapsed on the floor, curling into a ball. It was so cold. So this was what death felt like.

I looked at the blood covering my hands and forced out a smile.

This was my wedding gift to Jess. I was honoring her wedding with my life. I was using my life to repay Mom and Dad for bringing me into this world and raising me, too.

From now on, they didn't have to take turns keeping an eye on me. They wouldn't have to live in constant anxiety, feeling too embarrassed to talk about me in front of our other relatives. They would no longer be strained by the crushing weight of my treatment expenses.

Watching them break down, I sighed."Please stop crying. I know it's too little and hardly worth giving, but I tried my best. That's all the money I managed to save up. Just accept the token of my love."Mom pressed the envelope against her chest before kneeling in front of my portrait in a daze "Jon… I was wrong… I was so wrong…"…It rained heavily the day I was set to be buried. I sat on top of my own urn as Dad carried me, step by step, toward the grave that had already been dug.A distant relative stood beneath a tree to take shelter from the rain. He muttered under his breath. "Ugh, it's raining so hard… Then again, maybe it's for the best that he's gone. Sam and his family can finally be free. They don't have to wait on a mentally ill person, saving both their money and their time."His voice sounded especially jarring amid the solemn atmosphere.I froze for a moment. He was right, actually. That was what I had thought, too. But before I could nod in agreement…"That's n

I followed everyone out of the house. The neighbors had come out and gathered around to watch."Oh, dear. Is he really dead? I always said it wasn't right for the Stewarts to keep their son locked up like that…""I heard his mother was the one who handed him the knife yesterday. My God, how could a mother be so cruel?""He had depression, right? Sure, I pity him, but he has been such a huge burden on his family, too… Now, well, at least they're all free.""Hush! Keep your voice down! They haven't left yet. But honestly, you're right. The Stewarts can breathe easier now."The gossiping neighbors sounded like buzzing flies. Every single word was like a knife stabbing into my parents' hearts.Mom buried her head deep between her knees, curling into a ball as muffled sobs escaped her."Jon… My son…"But I would never be able to answer her again.…They set up the funeral service right in the living room, too. The wedding decorations had been taken down, replaced with a memorial p

Wasn't it better that I was dead now?Hovering in the air, I looked around at the blood-stained room and the three grieving figures in front of her. I lowered my head and said, "I'm sorry, Mom, Dad, and Jess. Even when I die, I still cause so much trouble for you guys. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."The ambulance and police arrived almost at the same time.Several emergency responders rushed into the room, but one look was all it took for them to shake their heads."His pupils are dilated, and lividity has already set in. He's been dead for at least 12 hours. He can't be resuscitated.""That's impossible! I even brought him some chocolate last night!"Mom, her hair disheveled and her face smeared with blood, lunged forward like a madwoman and grabbed the emergency responder by the collar."That's nonsense! Save him! My son isn't dead! He's just sleeping! I have money! I have 50,000 dollars, and you can have all of it! So please, save him!"A police officer stepped forward and pu

Mom froze in the doorway, still holding the door open."What's the matter, honey?"Sensing that something was wrong, Dad hurried forward and looked past Mom's shoulder into the room. At the next second, his eyes widened in horror. His whole body swayed, and he barely managed to catch himself against the doorframe.Jessica and Ian came over, too. Jessica's scream was so shrill that it nearly pierced my eardrums. They all saw me, the son and brother who gave them nothing but headaches, caused them nothing but embarrassment, and made them throw all their money down a bottomless pit.And right now, my body was lying in a pool of congealed blood, my hand still gripping the fruit knife."Jon…"Mom let out a wail. Her legs gave way, and she scrambled into the room. Her knees sank right into the pool of blood as her trembling hands reached for me."Jon! Jon, what's wrong? Don't scare me! Open your eyes and look at me…"She touched my throat. There was a gaping wound there, deep enough

"As long as you behave yourself and stop trying to kill yourself, I'll give you whatever you want," Mom declared.I nodded frantically, wanting to throw my arms around her and tell her, "I'll behave myself, Mom. I won't do it anymore. I'll never make you angry again! Mom, please don't be sad!"But my hands went right through her.Mom kept standing outside the door, waiting for a response, but none came. She looked disappointed."What's with this boy? He sure knows how to hold a grudge."Shaking her head, she pulled a small box of chocolates from her pocket and placed it on the floor outside my door. The family had bought the most expensive brand they could afford to give them out as wedding favors, and she'd saved some.I used to love chocolates the most."If you're hungry, have some chocolate to tide you over. Don't actually starve yourself. I'll make you some pancakes in the morning."With that, Mom went back to the master bedroom.I crouched and stared at the chocolate. How

Even though I no longer had a heartbeat, it still hurt and made me want to curl up. So this was what my family thought of me—even when I was dead, I was still just throwing a tantrum for no reason. The dining table was filled with leftovers from the wedding reception. I saw pork ribs, chicken wings, shrimp, and even half of the two-tier wedding cake.It all smelled so good. For the past three years, I'd been on a strict diet to prevent adverse reactions to my medication. All I could eat was soups and bland food, with barely any salt or fat.I'd almost forgotten what meat tasted like. Hovering over the dining table, I greedily breathed in the aroma of the pork ribs."I'll fix a plate of food for Jon. He hasn't eaten all day." Ian couldn't bring himself to be so heartless. He picked up a clean plate, put some pork ribs on it, and cut a slice of cake as well."Ian!"Mom abruptly marched over and snatched the plate from his hands. With a loud clatter, everything—the plate and the f
