Chapter One: Fractured Promises

Maya's POV

I rested my chin on my hand, staring out the window as the tree-lined avenue blurred by. The scent of freshly cut grass wafted through the air, but I couldn't appreciate its sweetness. Not when my mind was preoccupied with the elephant in the room.

"Alright, cheer up. Do you really have to get so worked up over her?" My husband, Larry, spoke in a calm voice, breaking the prolonged silence.

I turned my head to look at him, my gaze steady. "You promised me it would just be the two of us." The words came out laced with a mix of disappointment and accusation. "This wasn't part of the plan."

Larry averted his gaze, looking out the window. "I was just giving her a ride. We know her situation. Ever since her husband passed away, she's been miserable."

My eyes narrowed. You sure know her situation inside out, considering how much attention you've been giving her. But I swallowed the words, knowing they would make me seem jealous. Instead, I kept calm and said, "I'm not targeting her. After all, you're the one who made promises to me, not her. Don't forget what's important here."

I hinted at something more serious, but Larry didn't respond. "Larry, I'm talking to you." I said, swallowing hard. "And I know you can hear me."

"Why do you always do this?" Larry asked, his tone tinged with frustration.

"Do what?" I snapped at him.

"Act paranoid," he responded calmly.

I felt a surge of anger, but I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "I already explained to you."

"And I also need you to listen to me." Larry said. "You keep talking, but you never listen."

The tension between us was palpable, like a living, breathing entity. It was suffocating me.

Just then, the car door opened, and a delicate hand rested on the frame. Brandy smiled as she stood by the car, breaking the tension with a cheerful, "Sorry to keep you waiting. Can we get going now?"

God damnit! She smelled heavenly, like a field of roses on a warm summer day.

She slid into the backseat effortlessly, as if completely unaware of the tension in the air. The car started again, and I sighed inwardly, hoping to rest for the remainder of the drive.

But the car wasn't silent for long. Brandy's voice filled the space, and I felt suffocated by the conversation.

"Sigh, life has been so hard lately. The house feels so empty. I've been all alone, and there's no one to talk to. I'm so grateful to you both, especially you, Larry. If it weren't for you, I don't know how I would've coped."

Larry kept his eyes on the road, his tone gentle and calm. "We're friends."

Brandy's voice wavered, and tears started to fall. "Everyone else turned their backs on me after my husband passed, but you've stayed. I know you're his true friend. If only he were still here…"

My eyes rolled involuntarily. This was getting ridiculous.

"Hey," Larry said softly. "It's okay, don't cry okay?" He continued. "I'm sorry about Darey, I know it's still fresh and nobody ever heals from this pain but I promise to try my best to be there for you."

Brandy nodded, wiping a tear off her cheek. "Thank you." She muttered softly.

"Everybody needs somebody." Larry said again. "And I'll be that somebody if you need one."

How convenient! I nearly scoffed but I held myself.

A while later, we reached Brandy's destination, a small alley. Brandy unbuckled her seatbelt and got out, then turned back to Larry with a hint of helplessness in her eyes.

"I need to pick up some things. Can you come with me? It'll only take a few minutes."

I interjected coldly, "I thought we were just giving you a ride."

Brandy sounded aggrieved, "These things are important… they were his belongings. I can't carry them alone."

Larry turned to me, "Wait in the car. I'll be quick."

"But..." I couldn't finish the sentence before Larry cut me off.

"I said I'll be quick." He firmly then turned to leave with Brandy.

That "quick" ended up being an hour, and I was on the verge of falling asleep, irritation creeping in. Just then, my phone lit up. It was a call from Larry.

His tone was more of a statement than a request: "There's been a slight delay. Brandy ran into some old classmates. They want to have dinner together. We'll stay here tonight and leave for the camping trip tomorrow."

My frown deepened, my tone laced with resistance. "Old classmates? Hers or yours? We were supposed to go camping, just the two of us. How many times are you going to break that promise?"

Larry responded, "Why are you in such a rush? We can still go camping tomorrow. It'll be fine."

I took a deep breath, "Listen, we need to talk about some things. It's been three years—"

Before I could finish, Larry cut me off. "It can wait until tomorrow. Let's discuss it then."

He added, "There's a restaurant behind us, Freshland restaurant. We're there."

And with that, he hung up.

"Great!" I yelled to myself. "How great and awesome!" I scoffed, fighting back tears.

I stared at the darkening phone screen, feeling a mix of disappointment and helplessness. Taking a deep breath, I tightened my grip on my purse and pushed the car door open. Without another word, I stepped out and headed toward the restaurant.

The cool evening air hit me like a slap in the face, snapping me back to reality. I had a choice to make: confront the situation head-on or let it simmer, potentially destroying what was left of our already fragile marriage.

As I walked toward the restaurant, the sound of laughter and clinking glasses grew louder. I could feel my heart racing, my mind whirling with thoughts of Larry, Brandy, and our failing marriage.

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   MORNING AFTER THE STORM

CHAPTER 142 — MORNING AFTER THE STORMMAYA’S POVWhen I opened my eyes, it took me a second to remember where I was.The light hit my face softly — not harsh like the afternoon kind, but warm and steady. The kind of light that told you the night was over, whether you were ready for it or not. For a brief, sleepy moment, everything was still. Then it hit me.This wasn’t my room. The faint scent of cedar and soap gave it away before I even sat up. I blinked, adjusting to the brightness, and my eyes landed on the folded blanket over my legs — neat, tucked, like someone had made sure I was comfortable.Xves.The thought alone made my heart skip, quick and stupid. I looked around. The lights were back on. The storm had passed. The small table in the corner was empty except for a half-drained mug of coffee and his watch lying beside it.He wasn’t there.I glanced at the couch — its cushion slightly indented, a pillow tossed carelessly at the edge. He must’ve slept there. Of course he did. E

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   TO CLOSE TO BE SAFE

CHAPTER 141 — TOO CLOSE TO BE SAFEMAYA’S POVFor a few seconds, I just stood there, frozen in the glow of my own phone light. The beam hit Xves right across the jawline, throwing sharp shadows over his face — the kind of shadows that made him look both dangerous and heartbreakingly human. He wasn’t supposed to look like that. Not at me. Not when I was already drowning in confusion.“Did I wake you?” I managed, even though my voice sounded smaller than I wanted it to.“No.” His tone was low, calm, but his eyes told a different story. They were searching, assessing, like he was trying to figure out whether I was okay… or whether he needed to pull a weapon. “You shouldn’t be wandering around in the dark, Maya.”I swallowed hard, forcing a smile that didn’t quite make it. “You say that like I have a choice. The lights went out, and my head maid decided to test out her horror movie skills by sneaking up on me.”That earned me the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth — a half-smile,

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   A FACE IN THE DARK

CHAPTER 140 — A FACE IN THE DARKMAYA’S POVMy scream bounced off the marble walls like it was trying to find someone else to belong to. My heart slammed so fast I could feel it pounding against my throat. The dark swallowed everything—the room, the air, my thoughts—until all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing.I fumbled for my phone on the coffee table, nearly tripping over the edge of the couch as my foot slid on spilled water. My hands shook so badly I almost dropped it twice before the screen lit up. The glow cut through the black like a blade.Torch on.My thumb trembled as I swiped, light spilling across the room in a trembling arc.And then—A face.Right in front of me.I screamed again, louder this time, the phone nearly flying out of my hand. The woman screamed back. For a second, the two of us just stood there—two idiots in the dark, scaring the life out of each other. Then, finally, my brain caught up to my eyes.“Elaine?” I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest.

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   WHEN THE LIGHTS GOES OUT

CHAPTER 139 — WHEN THE LIGHTS GOES OUTMAYA’S POVBy the time I got home, I swear my soul felt like it had been wrung out, twisted, and hung up to dry under fluorescent light. The city outside the mansion window glowed like molten gold — rich, sleepless, full of life — but all I wanted was silence. You’d think being an heiress meant luxury, rest, and a life of people doing things for you. Spoiler alert: it’s exhausting. It’s the kind of exhaustion that seeps into your bones — not from what you do, but from what you have to pretend. Pretend you’re fine. Pretend you’re in control. Pretend the whole damn world doesn’t have an opinion on who you’re seen with.I dropped my heels at the door, kicked one of them a little too hard, and it clattered against the marble floor. My reflection in the glass wall looked like a stranger. Messy hair, ruined lipstick, the faint shimmer of tears I hadn’t realized I’d been holding back.“Perfect,” I muttered. “Just what every front-page heiress should lo

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   BETWEEN FIRE AND ICE

CHAPTER 138 — BETWEEN FIRE AND ICEMAYA’S POV“Come on.”“Where are we going?” I asked him, breathless, as Aleksander’s hand brushed my elbow.“I know a special place the paparazzi won’t find us,” he said, voice steady but his eyes scanning the chaos ahead. “I’ve actually never shown anyone before. The night’s still young, Maya. And I refuse to let it get ruined by a few nosy cameras.”But I didn’t move. Not because of the cameras.Because Xves was standing there too — right beside me — jaw tight, eyes dark, every inch of him screaming that I shouldn’t go anywhere with Aleksander Thorn. The flashes outside the restaurant were blinding. A storm of voices surrounded us — shouting, clicking, snapping — like a thousand vultures circling for the next scandal.“Ms. Perkins! Who are you leaving with tonight?”“Mr. Thorn! Are you confirming the dating rumors?”“Who’s the man in black? Her bodyguard or her boyfriend?”Every question hit harder than the last.I could feel my heart pounding so l

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   A DINNER WITH THE DEVIL

CHAPTER 137 — A DINNER WITH THE DEVILMAYA’S POVThe Velvet Lounge was too elegant for my mood.Dim lights. Velvet chairs. Jazz humming low in the background — that kind of expensive calm that made me want to flip a table.Aleksander Thorn was already seated when I walked in. Of course he was. It seemed the man was incapable of arriving anywhere late; drama was his love language, but so was control. He looked up from the menu the moment I approached, flashing that smug, movie-poster smile that could make naïve girls forget their morals. I wasn’t one of them.“Maya,” he drawled, standing just enough to seem polite. “You made it. Wasn’t sure if my favorite troublemaker would actually show.”I dropped into the chair opposite him, crossing one leg over the other. “I don’t like being called trouble.”“Then stop looking like it,” he said, lips curving. “What will you have? The steaks look good.”I exhaled sharply, resting a hand on my temple. “Let’s skip the small talk. You know why I’m her
