Chapter Two: A Blast from the Past
Maya's Pov
As I pushed open the door to the restaurant, a warm glow of golden light spilled out onto the sidewalk, beckoning me inside. The sounds of laughter and lively conversation enveloped me, making my heart sink. This was not what I had planned for our evening.
My eyes scanned the room, searching for Larry. I couldn't seem to find him anywhere. Then I looked out for Brandy, there was no sign of her either. Just then, a Waitress walked up to me, smiling.
"Good evening ma," She greeted. "Welcome to Freshland restaurant."
"Thank you." I smiled back at her, my eyes still darting everywhere for Larry.
"You look lost ma, can I help you?" She asked. "Do you have a reservation here or you just came to have dinner by yourself?"
"I'm here with my husband." I said firmly. "Don't worry, I'll just call him." I walked to an empty table and sat.
Larry was nowhere to be found and I sat there trying to fight back humiliating tears. After thirty minutes the waitress walked up to me again.
"Sorry to disturb you ma," She said. "Here is our menu." She handed me the menu. "What would you like to order from us today?" There was a steady smile in her voice.
I ignored her, exhaling deeply. I dialed Larry's phone, it rang repeatedly but he didn't pick.
"God damnit..." I muttered beneath my breath. "Damn you Larry... fucking screw you and that bitch."
"Sorry ma but sitting idle is against company policy." The waitress said firmly. "Is there something I can help you with..."
I looked up finally, staring at the waitress. "You want to help me? Fine. I am looking for my husband, he said he was here but I can't see him and he is not picking my calls. Can you help me find him?" I asked.
"Please describe your husband ma." She responded. "If I can't help I'll have the management review our CCTV footages."
I swallowed hard then began describing Larry and Brandy. When I had finished, I looked at the waitress hopelessly. "So? Have you seen either of them?"
"Yes ma." The waitress nodded. "They're at the VIP dinning. It's a lounge."
"Take me there." I demanded. "Please."
"Follow me ma."
The waitress took me to the VIP lounge and I spotted Larry immediately, sitting at a table, surrounded by a group of people I'd never met. Brandy sat next to him, smiling and chatting with the others as if she were part of the group. A heavy feeling sank in my chest. I had never met these people before, but I could already tell I didn't belong here.
"Is your husband on the table?" The waitress asked.
"Yes, thank you." I replied calmly. "That will be all for now."
"Okay ma." She turned and left.
My heart sank, and I felt a wave of anger wash over me. Who was Brandy really and why was she so entrenched in our lives?
One of the men, with a loud laugh and a boisterous demeanor, clapped Larry on the shoulder. "I can't believe we're seeing you again! To be honest, we all thought you and her—" he nodded toward Brandy, "—would end up together back then."
Another man, with a kinder face, chimed in, "Yeah, you two were the campus couple back in the day! I remember Darey even got into a fight with you over her. Who would've thought things would turn out like this... What happened between you two?"
"Yes, what happened?" A slender blonde sitting beside Brandy asked, smiling widely. "In a twinkle of an eye you guys went AWOL."
My mind reeled as I processed this new information. Campus couple? So they had a past. Why did Larry keep this from me?
Larry frowned, his tone firm. "We were young and foolish back then. It's all in the past now. Darey and I became close friends. Besides, he's gone now—bringing this up will just upset Brandy."
At this, Brandy's eyes filled with unshed tears, making her appear even more fragile. The man who had spoken earlier quickly apologized, feeling guilty for bringing it up. "Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up bad memories."
The other man sighed. "Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry Brandy."
Brandy only nodded quietly.
The blonde spoke again. "So Larry, are you married now?"
My thoughts swirled. Married for three years, and yet none of his friends know? Was he in prison or something, keeping it that secret?
I took a deep breath, adjusted my expression, and confidently walked toward the table. No matter what was going on between them, I knew I was his wife. Even if our relationship was on the brink of ending, I had to maintain my composure in front of these strangers.
"Mind if I join you?" I asked, my voice sweet as honey.
Larry noticed my approach and stood up calmly, offering a small smile. His eyes flickered, but I could see the guilt lurking beneath. "Of course not," he said, pulling out a chair for me.
I sat down, my eyes never leaving Larry's face. "So, what's going on?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Seems like it's a reunion."
Brandy smiled, oblivious to the tension. "We were just catching up," she said. "Larry and I have a lot in common."
I raised an eyebrow. "Really?" I said, my voice laced with skepticism. "You sure do have a lot in common."
Larry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Maya, let's not do this here," he said.
"We could do it home." I said, smiling. "Or at the camping trip."
"Maya," Larry whispered into my ears. "I said not here. That's enough."
He smiled at the others. "Yeah, I am married. I just haven't had a chance to tell you all yet. This is my wife, Maya." Then he looked at me. "Maya, meet my old classmates."
The group was stunned, eyes turning to me as they took me in. "Wow! Lucky guy, marrying such a beautiful woman!" one of them remarked, admiration clear in their voice.
"Larry, you hit a jackpot!" The blonde smiled at me.
I smiled politely, nodding in acknowledgment. Before anyone could say more, Brandy cut in smoothly with a soft laugh. "Alright, everyone, let's eat before the food gets cold."
As we sat down, I couldn't help but feel like an outsider, a stranger in a world that was once familiar. The conversation flowed around me, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was just a spectator, watching a play that I didn't understand.
Chapter 20: Failing MarriageMaya's POVMy gaze darted between the two of them. “What are you doing right now?” I asked, voice etched with disbelief. They were almost getting into a fight just to determine who would take care of me. As much as that was supposed to excite me, it didn't. “Decide, Maya. Will you go with him, or will you stay with me?” Larry asked. It could be a chance to build back trust between each other, could be a slight chance of him wanting me to stay but I didn't want that, not anymore. “Yes Maya, decide. Who would you like to go with?” The bitch who was taking Larry away from me said. Instead of thinking of it as a chance to get closer to Larry again, to turn things back to how they were before she came, I'd rather take it as a chance to distance myself from him. “I'll go with Marvin” I said and Larry's face dropped and I could see the grin on her face. Marvin also smirked at Larry, making him know he had won. “Then, take a full rest here before you leav
Chapter 19: In The HospitalLarry's POVI wanted to tell her I want her to stay with me. I wanted to tell her I wasn't sure of my feelings yet, but I don't want to lose her. I wanted her to understand that I think I might not be able to live without her, but she wasn't even giving me an audience. I had no option but to kiss her. Our lips crashed, touching each other, but it only lasted for a moment. She doesn't even want me. She pushed me away and I stared into her eyes breathless, but then something was leaving her body. Her life. Slowly, her eyes closed and then she slumped. “Maya!” I yelled, catching her into my arms. She doesn't stir, doesn't look like someone who was alive. Panic clawed at me as I carried her in my arms, taking her out of the party using the back door and not the crowded hall. Getting to the car, the driver knew he had to drive without being told. “Hurry up,” I told him. I didn't mention a place, but he knew where to go. Soon, the car halted in fron
Chapter 18: Her HusbandMaya's POV“Brandy. What exactly do you want from me?” I asked her. “In a few days, I'm going to let you have Larry, what else do you want?” I added, staring at her calmly. I wanted to glare, to take this on with her, but I sincerely had no strength. She twirled the wine glass in her hands as she smirked, stepping closer to me. “You think he wants to let you go?” She said, I didn't think of that as the truth, Larry doesn't want me, he said that himself. “Oh, come off it. Stop pretending” her face twisted in disgust. “You don't see the way he looks at you?” She asked. “Like he doesn't want to let you go,” she added. I didn't say a word, just gulped. “I don't want you to just leave, Maya. I want him to hate you, to never be able to look for you ever again, to never think about the miserable you again” she said. My fist clenched, my jaw clenching. “Watch what you say to me, Brandy” I was getting furious and if she didn't stop, I might end up grabbing her
Chapter 17: Dealing With HerMaya's POVLarry's gaze was on me like he was hurt, like he wished I'd stepped up instead and told him the wife was me and not her. But the truth is, he also didn't try to rectify it. He didn't tell the man he had presumed wrong and I'm his wife. That was because I'm not. I wouldn't ever be able to claim that title. The man left and then my gaze landed on the person who had been standing behind him. Marvin. His gaze was darkened and I could tell he was angry, but he did his best to mask it. Then his gaze darted from me to Larry. “Hey there,” Marvin greeted him as he came to stand beside me. “Hi” Larry's voice was restrained, like he didn't want to speak with Marvin because he might have stolen his project, his two years worth of money. Marvin's gaze cascaded over Brandy in disgust before he moved the gaze back to me. “Let's go in” he stretched his hand over to me. “I stared for a moment, not taking the hand and then Larry's voice came. “She's my
Chapter 16: Preparing For The GalaI stared at the dress Larry had handed over to me the previous day. It was for the gala party which is today. I really wished there wasn't a gala party, and that no divorce would be coming after the gala party, but there was no way I could change that. I sat down in front of my mirror, and applied some makeup to my face. He wants me to be there for being a wife's sake and that hurts, not because he truly wants people to see how grown our relationship has become, how close we turned out. I shoved the thought down my mind as I didn't want tears to ruin the perfect face I had just made. Then I slid the dress on, watching how beautiful it was. It was obvious, it was the last dress Larry would get me in this façade of a marriage. Putting my heels on, I grabbed my Chanel bag then walked out of the room. I walked down the stairs, but I was forced to pause when I saw Brandy who was standing beside Larry, the both of them waiting for me. My fist c
Chapter 15: The Child Is YoursLarry's POVWho would have thought the CEO of RaD was someone so close to me. I had never met him, though I always knew Maya had a brother. We didn't talk much about it for her to even tell me his name, and I never bothered asking. She usually doesn't want to talk about him. Sitting in my office, I couldn't help but think about this. I had left the house so early before Maya would wake up. I didn't know why I was avoiding her but I didn't know how I would face her. Last night, I had almost nodded to the fact that Brandy called her a whore. I honestly thought that she wants a divorce because she wants to be with the young man beside her, but turns out, he's Marvin Vinn. Her brother. Then my gaze went to the divorce papers she had given me. It was a good thing she hadn't signed them, but I wondered until when I would be able to keep giving excuses just because I wanted her here. With me. Henry interrupted my thoughts as he placed a knock on the d
