Chapter Two: A Blast from the Past

Maya's Pov

As I pushed open the door to the restaurant, a warm glow of golden light spilled out onto the sidewalk, beckoning me inside. The sounds of laughter and lively conversation enveloped me, making my heart sink. This was not what I had planned for our evening.

My eyes scanned the room, searching for Larry. I couldn't seem to find him anywhere. Then I looked out for Brandy, there was no sign of her either. Just then, a Waitress walked up to me, smiling.

"Good evening ma," She greeted. "Welcome to Freshland restaurant."

"Thank you." I smiled back at her, my eyes still darting everywhere for Larry.

"You look lost ma, can I help you?" She asked. "Do you have a reservation here or you just came to have dinner by yourself?"

"I'm here with my husband." I said firmly. "Don't worry, I'll just call him." I walked to an empty table and sat.

Larry was nowhere to be found and I sat there trying to fight back humiliating tears. After thirty minutes the waitress walked up to me again.

"Sorry to disturb you ma," She said. "Here is our menu." She handed me the menu. "What would you like to order from us today?" There was a steady smile in her voice.

I ignored her, exhaling deeply. I dialed Larry's phone, it rang repeatedly but he didn't pick.

"God damnit..." I muttered beneath my breath. "Damn you Larry... fucking screw you and that bitch."

"Sorry ma but sitting idle is against company policy." The waitress said firmly. "Is there something I can help you with..."

I looked up finally, staring at the waitress. "You want to help me? Fine. I am looking for my husband, he said he was here but I can't see him and he is not picking my calls. Can you help me find him?" I asked.

"Please describe your husband ma." She responded. "If I can't help I'll have the management review our CCTV footages."

I swallowed hard then began describing Larry and Brandy. When I had finished, I looked at the waitress hopelessly. "So? Have you seen either of them?"

"Yes ma." The waitress nodded. "They're at the VIP dinning. It's a lounge."

"Take me there." I demanded. "Please."

"Follow me ma."

The waitress took me to the VIP lounge and I spotted Larry immediately, sitting at a table, surrounded by a group of people I'd never met. Brandy sat next to him, smiling and chatting with the others as if she were part of the group. A heavy feeling sank in my chest. I had never met these people before, but I could already tell I didn't belong here.

"Is your husband on the table?" The waitress asked.

"Yes, thank you." I replied calmly. "That will be all for now."

"Okay ma." She turned and left.

My heart sank, and I felt a wave of anger wash over me. Who was Brandy really and why was she so entrenched in our lives?

One of the men, with a loud laugh and a boisterous demeanor, clapped Larry on the shoulder. "I can't believe we're seeing you again! To be honest, we all thought you and her—" he nodded toward Brandy, "—would end up together back then."

Another man, with a kinder face, chimed in, "Yeah, you two were the campus couple back in the day! I remember Darey even got into a fight with you over her. Who would've thought things would turn out like this... What happened between you two?"

"Yes, what happened?" A slender blonde sitting beside Brandy asked, smiling widely. "In a twinkle of an eye you guys went AWOL."

My mind reeled as I processed this new information. Campus couple? So they had a past. Why did Larry keep this from me?

Larry frowned, his tone firm. "We were young and foolish back then. It's all in the past now. Darey and I became close friends. Besides, he's gone now—bringing this up will just upset Brandy."

At this, Brandy's eyes filled with unshed tears, making her appear even more fragile. The man who had spoken earlier quickly apologized, feeling guilty for bringing it up. "Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up bad memories."

The other man sighed. "Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry Brandy."

Brandy only nodded quietly.

The blonde spoke again. "So Larry, are you married now?"

My thoughts swirled. Married for three years, and yet none of his friends know? Was he in prison or something, keeping it that secret?

I took a deep breath, adjusted my expression, and confidently walked toward the table. No matter what was going on between them, I knew I was his wife. Even if our relationship was on the brink of ending, I had to maintain my composure in front of these strangers.

"Mind if I join you?" I asked, my voice sweet as honey.

Larry noticed my approach and stood up calmly, offering a small smile. His eyes flickered, but I could see the guilt lurking beneath. "Of course not," he said, pulling out a chair for me.

I sat down, my eyes never leaving Larry's face. "So, what's going on?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Seems like it's a reunion."

Brandy smiled, oblivious to the tension. "We were just catching up," she said. "Larry and I have a lot in common."

I raised an eyebrow. "Really?" I said, my voice laced with skepticism. "You sure do have a lot in common."

Larry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Maya, let's not do this here," he said.

"We could do it home." I said, smiling. "Or at the camping trip."

"Maya," Larry whispered into my ears. "I said not here. That's enough."

He smiled at the others. "Yeah, I am married. I just haven't had a chance to tell you all yet. This is my wife, Maya." Then he looked at me. "Maya, meet my old classmates."

The group was stunned, eyes turning to me as they took me in. "Wow! Lucky guy, marrying such a beautiful woman!" one of them remarked, admiration clear in their voice.

"Larry, you hit a jackpot!" The blonde smiled at me.

I smiled politely, nodding in acknowledgment. Before anyone could say more, Brandy cut in smoothly with a soft laugh. "Alright, everyone, let's eat before the food gets cold."

As we sat down, I couldn't help but feel like an outsider, a stranger in a world that was once familiar. The conversation flowed around me, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was just a spectator, watching a play that I didn't understand.

CHAPTER 142 — MORNING AFTER THE STORMMAYA’S POVWhen I opened my eyes, it took me a second to remember where I was.The light hit my face softly — not harsh like the afternoon kind, but warm and steady. The kind of light that told you the night was over, whether you were ready for it or not. For a brief, sleepy moment, everything was still. Then it hit me.This wasn’t my room. The faint scent of cedar and soap gave it away before I even sat up. I blinked, adjusting to the brightness, and my eyes landed on the folded blanket over my legs — neat, tucked, like someone had made sure I was comfortable.Xves.The thought alone made my heart skip, quick and stupid. I looked around. The lights were back on. The storm had passed. The small table in the corner was empty except for a half-drained mug of coffee and his watch lying beside it.He wasn’t there.I glanced at the couch — its cushion slightly indented, a pillow tossed carelessly at the edge. He must’ve slept there. Of course he did. E

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   TO CLOSE TO BE SAFE

CHAPTER 141 — TOO CLOSE TO BE SAFEMAYA’S POVFor a few seconds, I just stood there, frozen in the glow of my own phone light. The beam hit Xves right across the jawline, throwing sharp shadows over his face — the kind of shadows that made him look both dangerous and heartbreakingly human. He wasn’t supposed to look like that. Not at me. Not when I was already drowning in confusion.“Did I wake you?” I managed, even though my voice sounded smaller than I wanted it to.“No.” His tone was low, calm, but his eyes told a different story. They were searching, assessing, like he was trying to figure out whether I was okay… or whether he needed to pull a weapon. “You shouldn’t be wandering around in the dark, Maya.”I swallowed hard, forcing a smile that didn’t quite make it. “You say that like I have a choice. The lights went out, and my head maid decided to test out her horror movie skills by sneaking up on me.”That earned me the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth — a half-smile,

CHAPTER 140 — A FACE IN THE DARKMAYA’S POVMy scream bounced off the marble walls like it was trying to find someone else to belong to. My heart slammed so fast I could feel it pounding against my throat. The dark swallowed everything—the room, the air, my thoughts—until all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing.I fumbled for my phone on the coffee table, nearly tripping over the edge of the couch as my foot slid on spilled water. My hands shook so badly I almost dropped it twice before the screen lit up. The glow cut through the black like a blade.Torch on.My thumb trembled as I swiped, light spilling across the room in a trembling arc.And then—A face.Right in front of me.I screamed again, louder this time, the phone nearly flying out of my hand. The woman screamed back. For a second, the two of us just stood there—two idiots in the dark, scaring the life out of each other. Then, finally, my brain caught up to my eyes.“Elaine?” I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest.

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   WHEN THE LIGHTS GOES OUT

CHAPTER 139 — WHEN THE LIGHTS GOES OUTMAYA’S POVBy the time I got home, I swear my soul felt like it had been wrung out, twisted, and hung up to dry under fluorescent light. The city outside the mansion window glowed like molten gold — rich, sleepless, full of life — but all I wanted was silence. You’d think being an heiress meant luxury, rest, and a life of people doing things for you. Spoiler alert: it’s exhausting. It’s the kind of exhaustion that seeps into your bones — not from what you do, but from what you have to pretend. Pretend you’re fine. Pretend you’re in control. Pretend the whole damn world doesn’t have an opinion on who you’re seen with.I dropped my heels at the door, kicked one of them a little too hard, and it clattered against the marble floor. My reflection in the glass wall looked like a stranger. Messy hair, ruined lipstick, the faint shimmer of tears I hadn’t realized I’d been holding back.“Perfect,” I muttered. “Just what every front-page heiress should lo

CHAPTER 138 — BETWEEN FIRE AND ICEMAYA’S POV“Come on.”“Where are we going?” I asked him, breathless, as Aleksander’s hand brushed my elbow.“I know a special place the paparazzi won’t find us,” he said, voice steady but his eyes scanning the chaos ahead. “I’ve actually never shown anyone before. The night’s still young, Maya. And I refuse to let it get ruined by a few nosy cameras.”But I didn’t move. Not because of the cameras.Because Xves was standing there too — right beside me — jaw tight, eyes dark, every inch of him screaming that I shouldn’t go anywhere with Aleksander Thorn. The flashes outside the restaurant were blinding. A storm of voices surrounded us — shouting, clicking, snapping — like a thousand vultures circling for the next scandal.“Ms. Perkins! Who are you leaving with tonight?”“Mr. Thorn! Are you confirming the dating rumors?”“Who’s the man in black? Her bodyguard or her boyfriend?”Every question hit harder than the last.I could feel my heart pounding so l

CHAPTER 137 — A DINNER WITH THE DEVILMAYA’S POVThe Velvet Lounge was too elegant for my mood.Dim lights. Velvet chairs. Jazz humming low in the background — that kind of expensive calm that made me want to flip a table.Aleksander Thorn was already seated when I walked in. Of course he was. It seemed the man was incapable of arriving anywhere late; drama was his love language, but so was control. He looked up from the menu the moment I approached, flashing that smug, movie-poster smile that could make naïve girls forget their morals. I wasn’t one of them.“Maya,” he drawled, standing just enough to seem polite. “You made it. Wasn’t sure if my favorite troublemaker would actually show.”I dropped into the chair opposite him, crossing one leg over the other. “I don’t like being called trouble.”“Then stop looking like it,” he said, lips curving. “What will you have? The steaks look good.”I exhaled sharply, resting a hand on my temple. “Let’s skip the small talk. You know why I’m her
