Chapter 1

The last time the system had appeared was when I gave up on the main quest and chose to stay for Harvey's sake.

The price was my body breaking out in oozing sores and boils. I was in agony, barely human.

Back then, Harvey was busy traveling for work. I never said a word.

When I gave birth to our daughter, I had a hemorrhage so severe that even the doctors recommended terminating the pregnancy. I begged them to save the baby.

I spent a week in the ICU. My body still hasn't fully recovered.

I told myself it was all worth it.

And now, I find out that just as I got pregnant, my husband was already crawling into bed with his own brother's widow.

Disgusting.

'System... can I take my daughter with me?'

[No. That would violate the laws of this world.]

I was silent for a long time. Finally, I replied, 'Then take me out.'

The system flickered.

[Protocol initiated. Countdown: 24 hours.]

Harvey was watching me. He softened his voice.

"Listen, honey. Lydia's had it rough since my brother died. She's not here to tear our family apart—she's here to join it. Nothing's going to change how I feel about you."

It was as if he'd forgotten the day he got down on one knee and promised me, "You're the only one I'll ever love."

I dimly remembered Lydia coming over once. I'd poured her a cup of hot chocolate, just being friendly.

Harvey snatched it out of her hand and threw it in the trash. "She's allergic to chocolate," he said.

I thought he just had a good memory. I forgot that he'd never once remembered I'm allergic to strawberries.

His mother shot me a disapproving look.

"Jennifer, a woman needs to be gracious about these things. You couldn't even produce a son. Lydia is carrying the McKinzie family's first grandson.

"If it weren't for Harvey's kind heart—remembering all those years you've been together—by all rights, Lydia should be the first wife and you the second."

I clutched my daughter tighter.

And then, my daughter reached her little hand toward Lydia and giggled. She knew Lydia.

My whole body started shaking.

So while I wasn't looking, Harvey had already been bringing our daughter to meet her stepmother.

Harvey saw it too.

"See? Even Ellie loves Lydia.

"Tell you what—I'll spend Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with you. Lydia can have the other three days. That's fair, isn't it?"

How ridiculous. I was supposed to be grateful that he was graciously allowing me to share my husband with another woman.

The man standing in front of me was a stranger.

If he really needed to take care of Lydia, there were a thousand other ways to do it. He chose the most disgusting one.

When he was lying to me all those months, did he ever think about me and our daughter?

A sharp pain stabbed through my heart.

"Forget it."

My voice was hollow.

"We're done."

Something clattered to the floor.

It was the ring he'd given me when he chose to give up studying abroad just to end our long-distance relationship. Back then, everyone said he was crazy. He just smiled and said, "My wife is where I belong. So that's where I'm going."

He'd made the ring himself. It wasn't worth much. But to me, it was priceless. I never took it off.

Now it lay at his feet, reflecting the shock on his face.

Zach appeared at my side before I even realized he had moved.Without a word, he stepped between me and Ellie, positioning himself like a wall. He stared coldly at Harvey."The lady made herself clear. Take your child and leave. Don't disturb her life.""Who are you?" Harvey's eyes went wide. He studied Zach with open suspicion."Who I am doesn't matter." Zach's voice was calm, but there was steel underneath it. "What matters is that Jennifer doesn't want to see you."Harvey's gaze bounced between Zach and me. His jaw tightened. He looked at me, unwilling to accept it."You've moved on? Why won't you even give me a chance to make things right? I know I was wrong. I know it."I didn't have the patience to keep looking at him."Zach. Call the police. I'm done here."Zach pulled out a pair of handcuffs without hesitation.Harvey panicked. He and Ellie had no legal identity in this world. If the police took him in, there would be no way to explain it."Fine. Ellie—we're leaving.

Harvey looked more composed than before. He had put his glasses back on—the ones he'd stopped wearing. When he saw me, there was a flicker of sadness in his eyes."Jennifer..."My face went cold."How did you find me?"I called out to the system in my head, over and over. Nothing. No response.Harvey hesitated, then spoke slowly."After you left, I drank every day. I ran the company into the ground. I had Lydia committed to a psychiatric hospital. I sent my parents back to their hometown. And then I went bankrupt."The day I lost everything, I had a dream. There was this white, glowing AI. It told me I was living inside a novel."It said my world collapsed because I'd lost everything. That's when I found out you weren't really dead—you were a player who had escaped the world."His voice grew more agitated."So I gave up everything I had left. And finally, the time portal opened today."My face didn't change."And? If you came all this way for me, you can leave."I set Elli

Three years back in the real world. I ran a coffee shop now.Over those three years, my life had finally found its rhythm. The wind chimes by the door jingled. One of my employees smirked and glanced my way."Boss. He's here again."I looked up. My eyes met Zach Remington's.He wore a black leather jacket that did absolutely nothing to hide his build—broad shoulders, narrow waist. At six-foot-four, Zach radiated a quiet kind of safety."Jennifer. You stood me up. Again."He wasn't happy about it. He pressed his car keys against my shoulder like an accusation.I didn't even look up from the pot of tapioca pearls I was stirring."Officer Remington, you finally have a day off. Why don't you just stay home and sleep instead of coming all the way here to bother me? Besides, I told you yesterday—I was working late tonight."Zach ignored me completely. He washed his hands, sanitized, and took the spoon right out of my hand, shoving me aside with his hip."I'm trying to win you over

Lydia was wearing a slinky lace camisole, a hint of shyness playing on her lips."Harvey... my water heater broke. Do you mind if I shower at your place?"Harvey caught a familiar scent. He remembered now. That night he'd been drugged—this was exactly what he'd smelled."Harvey?"When he didn't answer, Lydia smiled and stepped closer. The thin straps of her camisole slid down her shoulders. The next second, Harvey grabbed the nearest vase and brought it down on her.She screamed. But before she could react, he had her pinned to the floor."You. YOU'RE the one who killed Jennifer!"His eyes were bloodshot. His hands closed around her throat. He wanted to snap her neck right there."Tell me! When you dropped Ellie into that bathtub, were you trying to kill her?!"Who gave you the right to frame my wife? What kind of evil are you made of?!"You worthless piece of—I'm going to make you pay for what you did to her!"Lydia's face turned purple. She clawed at his hands, her nail

"System. Transmit me out."I lowered my gaze, refusing to be trapped here any longer. The system's voice crackled through my mind.[Host, the spacetime portal is not yet fully open. Flashes of Lydia's taunts flickered through my mind."Yes. Proceed."Harvey walked out of the crematorium, cradling my ashes in his arms like they might shatter. His parents stood beside Lydia. Neither of them looked even remotely sad."Jennifer made her own choice," his mother said flatly. "There's no point in grieving forever."She took Lydia's hand and guided her forward."Ellie needs a mother. Now that Jennifer is gone, you and Lydia should go get your marriage license as soon as possible. Then you'll be a real family."His mother had never really liked me. "JENNIFER!"The moment I hit the ground, the world went silent. The back of my skull cracked open against the pavement. Blood bloomed beneath me like a dark flower. Screams erupted from every direction.I floated in mid-air and watched Harvey come tumbling down the stairs, tripping over himself, his face a mask of pure despair. He stopped about three feet from my body. His eyes landed on my broken limbs. My dislocated jaw. My eye, which had come loose from its socket and now stared blankly at nothing. He let out a raw, animal scream."Someone get a doctor! NOW!"Doctors and nurses came running. One look was all it took."Secure the scene. Call the police."A nurse started to cover my twisted face with a white sheet.Harvey lost his mind."What are you doing?! She's alive! SAVE HER!"He lunged forward and ripped the sheet away. His palms were bleeding—he'd dug his own nails in so hard they'd drawn blood."Baby, wake up. Come on. WAKE UP!"He couldn't believe it. He pulled
