Chapter 1

On a cruise ship not far away, Natalia Stone, who was dressed in a wedding gown, was kissing Irving Schmidt with a blissful smile on her face.

Amid the guests' cheers, a cold and mechanical voice echoed in my mind. "You failed to win over any of the targets of affection. You will be forcibly erased in two weeks."

I smiled bitterly.

After I was reborn into this body, the system had given me four targets of affection. If I could get any of them to reach 100 affection points, my body that was ravaged by a terminal illness in my original world would be cured.

Over the years, I had tried desperately to win them over. I humbled myself as much as possible. However, every single time their affection was about to max out, Irving would appear. Then, all the points I had painstakingly accumulated would be wiped clean.

Now, even my final target of affection was also about to marry Irving.

With that in mind, I turned decisively toward the edge of the deck and threw myself into the sea. Seawater engulfed my body. I spread my arms, letting myself sink toward the depths.

Just then, a figure grabbed me and dragged me back toward the surface. Fresh air rushed into my lungs again. Before I could even react, a hard slap landed squarely on my face.

"You chose to jump into the ocean on Irvy's wedding day on purpose, didn't you? Why? Did you want us to feel sorry for you?"

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and looked at the person in front of me. The disgust in her eyes caused a pang in my heart.

It was my older sister, Mavis Caldwell. She was my very first target of affection in this world.

After our parents died, she and I could only rely on each other to survive. When the car accident happened, I had shielded her without hesitation. All the impact from the crash landed on me, so I ended up with ruptured organs and a long stay in the ICU.

She had held onto me and cried until her voice was hoarse. She swore that no matter what happened in the future, she would protect me. She had said that I was her only family left in this world.

But on the day I was discharged from the hospital, I saw her bring Irving into our home. She had told me that he would be our younger brother from then on. She let Irving move into my room and allowed him to beat the little dog I had raised for eight years to death.

Every time Irving and I argued, she always took his side and scolded me without even asking what had happened. She accused me of being petty and narrow-minded despite being the older brother.

The 97 affection points I had painstakingly accumulated over eight years were all stolen by Irving in less than a single week. From that moment on, Mavis' affection toward me kept dropping. She even refused to acknowledge me as her brother in public.

When Mavis saw me sitting blankly on the ground, she took out a bottle of heart medication from her purse and threw it in front of me.

"Are you faking heart pain again? Take your medicine and get the hell out of here!" she barked.

The truth was, I didn't have any heart disease. All those episodes had been the system's punishment. Back then, Mavis had been afraid something might happen to me, so she always carried the medicine with her.

But now, there wasn't the slightest warmth left in my heart. I grabbed the bottle, poured out a handful of white pills, and stuffed them into my mouth.

Mavis froze for a split second before screaming and slapping my hand away. The pills spilled from my mouth.

She grabbed my wrist tightly and questioned in a trembling voice, "Lucian, have you lost your mind?"

Of course I hadn't. I just wanted to go home and say goodbye to my real sister.

I stayed silent and said nothing. Mavis shot me a vicious glare.

As more and more guests gathered to watch, she started to get impatient. She ordered the bodyguards to take me off the ship.

Just as I stepped onto the deck, the sound of high heels clicking against the floor sounded behind me.

The scene shifted. At last, the woman's face came into clear view. When Natalia saw that familiar face, her mouth fell open in shock as she blurted, "Nadine!"The woman standing beside Irving was none other than Natalia's older sister, Nadine Stone."I rammed into Natalia's car. Even if she didn't die, she'd be crippled for life. Don't worry. Nothing will trace back to me. And even if it does, someone else will take the fall. After all, the car I was driving belonged to Lucian. It was a gift from Mavis," Irving said smugly in the video. With trembling fingers, Natalia opened the email she had received a few days earlier. The video inside showed the scene of the car accident clearly. Irving's face was unmistakably captured on camera. After Irving returned to the country, Nadine had been kicked out of the Stone family because she had done something unforgivable in the eyes of the head of the family. Because of that, Irving immediately changed his stance and tried to get close to N

"Don't forget about your hit-and-run, Lucian. As soon as I call the police, you'll be sent to prison!" Natalia threatened. This time, Mavis and Shiloh stepped in front of me before I could say anything."Luc would never do something like that. I can prove he wasn't the one driving the car.""I believe in Luc too. I won't allow any of you to hurt him."The system's voice sounded in my mind. "Lucian, Mavis' and Shiloh's affection toward you has reached 90 out of 100 points. Do you truly not wish to restart the mission?"I replied calmly, "No, I won't restart my mission. Are my remaining points enough to exchange for all videos of the truth?"After receiving the system's confirmation, I exchanged my points for all the videos decisively.Soon, both Natalia and Kimberly received an email.Kimberly opened hers out of curiosity. In the very next second, her expression shifted drastically.A woman's voice rang out. "You planned that rear-end collision perfectly. I hear Kimberly is com

After exchanging the points for the video, I forwarded it to Shiloh. As long as I didn't restart the mission, my ending was still certain death. Before I left, I wanted to clear my name.Shiloh glanced at her phone irritably. "What is this now? Are you trying to frame Irvy again? Aren't you tired of fabricating this kind of stuff?"But the moment she played the video, her eyes suddenly widened. As she was a professional photographer, it was easy for her to tell that the footage was real.In the video, when I was shielding Shiloh from her dad's brutal beating, Irving was standing right beside her dad's new girlfriend."If you want to deal with Shiloh, you have to get rid of Lucian first. I have a way to make Shiloh and Lucian completely turn against each other."Irving had hired several thugs with unsavory fetishes to humiliate me. But as the thugs were about to abduct me, Shiloh unexpectedly went to deliver some photo papers to Irving. So, he was taken by mistake instead.Shilo

Even a system without emotions was willing to bend the rules for me. Yet, none of the women I had genuinely given my heart to was willing to believe me.I no longer wished to have anything to do with them. Even if it meant death, I refused to keep sacrificing myself for them."I'll expose him and make sure he's utterly ruined," I said coldly to Mavis. Her face grew even paler, and there was a trace of pleading in her eyes. She asked sadly, "Why? Our parents are already gone. Besides the two of us, Irvy is our only remaining family in this world. Do you really want to drive him to death?"I sneered and retorted, "Family? Would you still call him family if I told you he was the one who killed Mom?"Mavis froze. Then, she shook her head in disbelief. "That's impossible. Irvy is so kind. He would never do something like that. He might be Dad's illegitimate child, but he didn't have a choice in that. He never wanted to be born with that identity."Ignoring her defensive statements f

Aside from Mavis and me, the only person who could have taken that car was Irving.Irving stared at me in silence for a long moment. Then, he suddenly laughed. He said, "Since Lucian insists that I was the one driving, then let's just say it was me. Nat, even if I wasn't the one who caused your paralysis, I'm willing to make it up to you."With that, he rushed straight into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He stabbed his own leg without hesitation.Four figures flashed past my eyes as blood splattered everywhere. Natalia and the other three women had reached out with their bare hands to grab the blade.Seeing the cuts on their hands, Irving teared up and started sobbing. "Is it really worth hurting yourselves for me? You're the most important people in my life. I don't want you to hate me. I'm willing to lose both my legs if that would prove my innocence. "Nat, I wasn't the one driving the car that day."Ignoring the wounds on her own hands, Natalia pulled Irving tightly into h
