Chapter 2

Author: Mingo
It took Fiona seven days to come home again.

She carried a gift box in her arms and a few takeout bags in her hands.

Behind her, as always, was Steven.

Ever since Steven returned, this had become normal—him hovering around, us fighting, her ignoring me for days, then showing up like nothing had happened.

Now, she wore the same dismissive expression I'd seen a hundred times.

"Look, you were treated unfairly last time. I brought Steven here to apologize to you—in person."

She nodded at Steven.

He forced a stiff bow, barely hiding his resentment.

"Sorry, man. I shouldn't have hit you at your grandma's party or called you a homewrecker. It was just a joke, you know? I apologize. Happy now?"

His words were polite, but his eyes said loser when Fiona wasn't watching.

Fiona shoved the gift box into my arms.

"There. Steven apologized. It's done. Now go cancel the divorce filing."

"I know your grandma's health is fragile, so I've arranged for the best specialists at St. Mary's. She's in a private suite now—bills go to me. Don't worry about it."

"And the birthday thing? Once the gossip dies down, I'll throw her a proper party to make up for it."

She opened the takeout boxes as she spoke.

The best parts of each dish had already been picked out.

Steven shrugged. "Sorry, Fi—I got hungry on the way. Took a bite out of each one. Kyle won't mind eating my leftovers, right?"

Fiona gave him a fond, exasperated look, then turned to me.

"He was hungry. It's not a big deal."

I pushed the gift box aside and looked at her.

"I don't want your charity."

"And Grandma's medical bills—I'll pay them myself. Her birthday doesn't need a makeup party from anyone else."

Fiona's face darkened. "You're making a scene over food now?"

"Look at yourself, Kyle Wilson. You got fired. You live off your wife. Your grandma's in a private suite because I arranged it. All you do is run your mouth—what else are you good for?"

I didn't argue. I dropped the gift box in the trash and pointed at the takeout.

"Throw out these leftovers too."

The maid hesitated. Fiona's expression went cold.

"Are you seriously still picking a fight?"

I gave a bitter smile. "If that's how you want to see it, fine."

I turned to leave, not wanting to see either of them.

Fiona's voice came from behind me, frozen and final.

"Kyle Wilson, I'll give you one last chance. Take the gift. Eat the food. Go cancel the divorce filing yourself. Act like none of this happened."

"Because if you don't take the way out I'm giving you now, there won't be another one."

I kept walking.

"Thanks for the offer, Miss Harrison. Give it to someone who needs it."

Behind me, I heard her cold, furious laugh.

Then she turned to Steven.

"Tonight. The Harrison family dinner. You're coming with me."

Steven's face lit up. "Me? Fiona, that's a family event. What am I supposed to be?"

Fiona wrapped her arm around his.

"My fiancé, of course."

I spun around, disbelief crashing through me.

But Fiona's eyes were fixed on Steven.

"Steven, I'm divorcing Kyle. Will you marry me?"

Steven shot me a triumphant glare and answered without a second's hesitation.

"Yes. Yes, I will."

Fiona turned to face me, my face pale as death.

"You wanted a divorce, right? Who I marry after that is none of your business."

My voice cracked. "You're right. Who you marry is your choice. I couldn't care less."

Fiona's eyes burned into me. Then she grabbed Steven's arm and marched out.

"Kyle Wilson," she called over her shoulder, "you'll regret this!"

Only then did Steven show fear.He wailed at Fiona. "Fiona, please—don't let them do this. I made a mistake—a moment of impulse. I'll apologize, I'll pay him anything. I'm young—I can't go to prison. Please, for old times' sake, help me."Fiona thought of how close I'd come to drowning at the bottom of that reservoir. She looked at him without a trace of warmth."You crossed the line, Steven.""When you break the law, you pay the price. Use your time inside to think about what you've done."Steven broke. His face twisted with rage."He didn't even die! I did all this because I love you!""Why? When you thought he did wrong, you kept defending him, making excuses, refusing to divorce him—""And I make one mistake, and you won't give me a single chance?!"Fiona's voice was ice."Kyle is Kyle. Everyone else is everyone else.""What makes you think you can compare to him?"Steven froze. Then he laughed, bitter and broken."So you never cared about me at all.""But Fiona—if you hadn't favor

At dawn, I left for the hillside where Grandma was buried.Beside her grave stood Grandpa's, and my parents'.The entire Wilson family—reduced to just me.I sat there for hours, crying until I had nothing left. Then I heard rushed footsteps behind me.I spun around—two men grabbed me, pinning me down."Who are you?!"Steven stepped out of a nearby car and walked toward me, slow and deliberate.I couldn't believe my eyes. "Steven—what the hell? Fiona and I are divorced. What do you want now?"Seeing me helpless, Steven smiled. He glanced around the shabby graveyard with disgust, then fixed his hate-filled eyes on me."Yeah, you're divorced. Too bad she still won't marry me.""I pulled every trick I had—but she's still hung up on a pathetic loser like you. She came all the way out here to beg you to take her back!"He laughed, manic."But it doesn't matter. She can't let you go now. But once you're dead—how long will she hold on?"He turned to his thugs. "Take him to the reservoir."They

Inside, I noticed the blood seeping through Fiona's pant leg.I didn't want any trouble. I pulled out the first-aid kit and handed it to her."You're hurt. Do it yourself."Fiona rolled up her pant leg. The wound had reopened from the long journey, raw and bleeding. She looked up at me, searching for a flicker of concern. But I'd already turned away, indifferent. She dressed the wound in silence, her voice tinged with bitterness."Before, you'd have been so worried. You'd have done this for me yourself."I let out a bitter laugh. "You said it yourself—before.""You got the divorce notice, didn't you?"Her chest tightened. She grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to meet her eyes."Kyle, I never wanted a divorce! I told you—agreeing to it, saying I'd marry Steven—that was all out of anger!""You're my husband. Only you."I looked at her—at the hurt and confusion in her eyes—and felt my own hurt surge up, raw and overwhelming.I shoved her hands away."Fiona, what makes you think that just b

(Third-person POV)Fiona froze, unable to believe her ears.Mrs. Wilson was dead? She'd passed away last week?Suddenly, she remembered that night at the manor—Kyle on his knees, begging over and over, telling her his grandmother was in trouble. She'd thought he was just trying to dodge responsibility. Was it all true? Her hands trembling, she pulled out her phone and dialed Kyle's number. It rang. No answer.Once. Twice. Three times..."The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Fiona's heart sank, heavy and cold. Then her phone buzzed. An email."Dear Ms. Harrison: This is to notify you that your divorce application with Mr. Kyle Wilson has been finalized."Finalized? How was that possible? Then it hit her—days ago, she'd gotten a notification from City Hall on her phone. She'd been busy taking care of Steven. She'd glanced at the sender, saw "City Hall," and swiped it away without another thought. She'd told Kyle to go cancel the filing. But now, replaying it in her mind,

My mouth opened, but no sound came.My knees buckled. I dropped to the ground.Grandma had spent her last three hours lying alone in a hospital corridor. While I—I was kneeling miles away, begging for forgiveness over Steven's rash."AHHH!"A raw, anguished wail tore out of me.A nurse nearby whispered, voice thick with pity:"Such cruelty... She was fine in the private suite. One phone call, and they pulled it... like she didn't matter..."One phone call.It destroyed Grandma's last chance. And it shattered the last thread of hope between Fiona and me.No one would ever call me by my childhood name again. No one would ever leave a light on, waiting for me to come home.Three days later, I was on my way to the crematorium to pick up Grandma's ashes.Fiona's car blocked my path. She stepped out in a black suit, makeup impeccable, holding a folder."Kyle Wilson. Steven's family reported you for assault.""Intentional poisoning—that's a criminal charge.""But I convinced Steven to settle

One by one, the Harrisons left. Each one sneered at me as they passed."So this is Fiona's secret husband? Looks decent, but what a snake.""Almost killed Steven. It's a miracle they still keep him around."I don't know how long I knelt—my knees had long since been ground raw through my pants. The night wind cut through my thin shirt like a blade. My slapped cheek was swollen, my lips cracked from thirst. I was a wreck. At 11:20 p.m., my phone rang.It was the hospital. My heart seized. I scrambled to answer."Mr. Wilson, your grandmother has gone into acute heart failure post-op. She's in critical condition! We need you here to sign the paperwork!""And... two hours ago, Harrison Group's office called. They withdrew her private suite privileges and downgraded her to standard care...""Your grandmother was moved out of the ICU to the emergency hallway.
