Chapter 3

작가: Frolicking Heron
Since it was time to turn in for the night, Logan intended to grab his blanket and take it with him.

That was when it hit him—in the last few months, he'd rarely spent the night in my room. He'd moved his bedding into Bianca's room ages ago so he could keep her company and lull her to sleep.

Logan looked a little awkward as he withdrew his hand and scurried out.

Just then, I received a message on my work phone. "A major traffic accident has occurred on Construction Road. All employees from the relevant traffic and urban development departments are required to report back for an emergency meeting."

Logan had taken a week's leave on my behalf so I could recover from my abortion. I was under no obligation to work overtime tonight. But I felt so suffocated under this roof that I decided to throw on some clothes, grab my bag, and head to the office to clear my head.

As it turned out, roadwork was underway on Construction Road. A large truck had failed to notice the warning signs and driven onto the freshly paved section, causing it to collapse. The road caved in over a stretch of several hundred yards, and the truck driver died at the scene.

My superior was livid and berated everyone in the conference room. "Who on earth is in charge of the roadwork schedule? Who's in charge of the warning signs? Why has it taken nearly four months to repair such a short stretch of road, and it's still not finished? Why aren't the warning signs visible to drivers at night?"

I wasn't responsible for that stretch of road, so I let my thoughts wander, twirling a pen between my fingers. Yet the moment I heard that the repairs had been going on for four months, I suddenly remembered something.

According to the phone call I'd received from Bianca, she'd gotten into that car accident while she was taking Logan's grandmother, Susan Archer, to the farmers' market in the eastern suburbs.

Mrs. Archer Senior had wandered off on her own and was almost struck by a heavy truck. Bianca had pushed her out of the way in the nick of time, only to lose her legs.

There was something that didn't add up, though. The farmers' market was in the city, where large trucks weren't allowed on most roads. Construction Road was the sole exception. Yet, it had already been under construction two months ago...

When these thoughts lined up in my head, I quietly asked my colleague, Kenneth Wilder, "Could you find some time to check whether any trucks took the roads leading to the farmers' market in the eastern suburbs on March 20?"

Kenneth nodded. "Leave it to me."

By the time I got off work, it was already the middle of the night. Instead of going home, I spent the night at the house my late mother had left me. Now, all I wanted was to study abroad, stay away from all this mess, and get as far away from Logan as possible.

Hence, I booted up my laptop and organized the documents I needed to study overseas. While I was at it, I also emailed my resignation letter to my superior.

Then, I sank into bed. For the first time in forever, I slept like a baby.

…

The following day, when I returned home, I found Bianca on my bed in a white nightdress that barely covered her buttocks. Her cheeks were flushed, and her body was twisted like a pretzel. A bashful smile played on her lips.

The moment she saw me, she let out a shrill squeal, clutching the edge of the blanket tightly.

Her hands trembled slightly as she said, "My bad, Violet. I kept having nightmares when I slept in that room last night, so Logan allowed me to sleep in this bed. He thinks something about that room is making me uneasy, so I'm afraid I'll have to sleep in this room from now on."

Her voice dropped to a whisper, and she feigned innocence. Yet, I still caught a triumphant glint in her eyes.

This was Logan's and my marital home. Apart from the memories Logan and I had made here, the house itself was cold and lifeless, so I didn't mind letting her have it.

However, the blanket she had draped over herself was one Mom had painstakingly sewn for my wedding, stitch by stitch, while she was still alive. She'd made it with so much love, yet this woman had sullied it.

I felt sick to my stomach and snatched the blanket off Bianca. "I don't care if you stay here, but can you at least use a new blanket?"

Kenneth placed his property deeds, car keys, and credit cards in front of Dad. "This is everything I own, Mr. Dixon. It's all for Vi. What do you think? "If these aren't enough, she can have every penny I earn from now on, too. I'll be making around 30 grand a day, which is more than enough for us to live comfortably."Dad laughed heartily. "Of course these aren't enough! My daughter will be the one wearing the pants in the future, right?" "That goes without saying," Kenneth answered without the slightest hesitation. …Kenneth and I held our wedding back home. Logan came alone to congratulate us. Even though he wore a relatively formal black suit, he no longer carried himself with the confidence he once had. In fact, there wasn't even a shadow of his former self left. He forced a smile. "Congratulations on your wedding, Vi."I smiled at him. "Thank you." He was like an old acquaintance I rarely kept in touch with. I didn't make much small talk with him. I simply arranged

Tears glistened in Logan's eyes. "We can have another baby. I can build you another house, exactly the way you want it!""You still don't get it." I reached out and slapped him hard across the face. "Does it hurt? You can't bring back what's been lost, and you can't repair what's been broken. Our relationship is no different. "Let's get divorced. I want you to stop pestering me as well. If you don't leave, I'll call the cops and have you deported!"Logan's expression turned bleak. I returned home and told the security guards to keep an eye on him and make sure no unwanted visitors got into the premises. Logan spent the entire day on his knees outside. The next morning, when I drew back the curtains, I could still see the familiar figure I never wanted to lay eyes on again. The security guards eventually drove Logan away, saying he was disrupting public order. After Logan returned home, I immediately received an email from him. It contained the signed divorce agreement and a l

Dad stroked my hair with a heart-wrenching look on his face. "My precious daughter has really grown up." Perhaps after losing a loved one, living in a different country from Dad, and discovering my husband's infidelity, I'd seen so much of life's harsh realities in the last three years that I'd simply gotten used to it all. I was slowly beginning to realize that what was lost was lost. There was no point in staying trapped in the past. When my house was burned down, I'd hated Logan and Bianca with every fiber of my being. I'd wished I could damn them to the worst fate imaginable. However, now, I was slowly making peace with a lot of things that had once weighed heavily on my heart. I knew that the only way forward was to stop looking back. Dad provided me with a comfortable life overseas. For the first time in a long while, I could finally be a child again. I was free from the burden of managing every little thing in a household. I began to learn everything I wanted to lear

There were days when Mrs. Archer Senior was confused and disoriented, and there were other days when she was perfectly lucid. She lived alone in a villa, with two housekeepers we'd hired to look after her. Bianca didn't have to worry about Mrs. Archer Senior's daily needs at all. Now that I was about to leave, it was only natural for me to visit Mrs. Archer Senior one last time. I bought a bunch of things and headed to Mrs. Archer Senior's villa. She held my hand and examined me closely before asking, "Who is this?" The housekeeper was all smiles. "She's your granddaughter-in-law." "Logan has a wife now? What a beautiful young woman." Mrs. Archer Senior was still as affectionate as ever, leading me inside to take a seat.I took out the medication she usually took and asked the caregiver when Bianca was with Mrs. Archer Senior. The housekeeper responded, "Bianca looks after Mrs. Archer Senior when the two of us are on leave. She also drops by from time to time. She's been

Kenneth's voice sounded so comforting at that moment that the emotions I'd worked so hard to suppress overflowed. "Kenneth."He fell silent for a moment, clearly caught off guard, before asking cautiously, "What's the matter, Vi? Where are you? I'll come get you right now!""I'm home. My old home.""Stay right there!"After wrapping up the call, it took him less than half an hour to show up in front of me. Drinking in the sight before him, Kenneth scowled. "Who did this?" "Logan," I answered, unable to stop my tears from spilling over.Kenneth suppressed his anger and knelt beside me, gently stroking my head. "I have a few spare rooms at my place, Vi. If you're comfortable with it, you can crash at my place for a while. We'll work out the rest together." "What did you want to tell me?" I asked. He abruptly recalled something and pulled a flash drive and a file out of his briefcase. "I checked all the surveillance footage from the day you told me about. I can guarantee that

Anger began to simmer inside me. That house was the one Mom had left me. Yet, Logan seemed delighted with her suggestion. He smiled warmly at her. "That's a great idea! You're always so thoughtful, Bee. It's a deal then." Right after saying that, he looked up at me. "What do you think? Now, you won't have to be jealous anymore." "Mom left that house to me! Why should I let her live there?" I fumed. "You're one hell of a schemer, Bianca. You've schemed your way into my life, and now you want to take over my home, too?" For the first time ever, Logan raised his hand and slapped me. The next second, he stared at his own hand, his gaze flickering. His Adam's apple bobbed. "Bee saved my grandmother. How could someone so kind ever scheme against you? You're such a judgmental snob!"Without wasting a second, he called a moving company and arranged for Bianca's belongings to be packed up and transported to my house. I hurriedly stopped him, yet he had made up his mind. I spread my
