LOGINSitting inside the car parked in front of the civil registry office, holding her marriage certificate, Alexa still could not believe it. She was truly married to Devan, a man eleven years older than her.
Without her father’s knowledge, and without anyone else knowing.
“From now on, you are my wife, and also my spokesperson when meeting clients.”
That firm, deep voice pierced her ears. When Alexa turned her head to look at Devan, she could only nod slowly.
“Do you need me to take you home to pack your things?”
Whether it was an offer or merely a question, Alexa felt that Devan’s words were nothing more than a formality laced with mockery.
“I’ll go home by myself.” Avoiding Devan’s gaze, Alexa continued, “Don’t worry, I won’t run away either.”
“It’s better if you know your place.”
Hearing Devan’s words, for some reason, the sentence stabbed painfully at her chest.
As the car began to move, the phone inside Alexa’s bag kept ringing, breaking the silence in the car.
When Alexa saw the name displayed on the screen, her face darkened and her jaw tightened. Even so, she answered the call.
“Hello.”
“Alexa, what does this mean? Why did you suddenly resign? And … your reason is because you’re going to work at your father’s company? Is this a joke?”
With an expressionless face as she listened to all of Ronan’s words, Alexa replied calmly, “It’s not a joke.”
“Then what about the cooperation with Mr. John?”
A faint sneer appeared on Alexa’s lips. It was easy to guess—what Ronan cared about was only business.
“Don’t worry. I’ll still take care of it. See you on the day of our engagement, Ronan.”
Alexa immediately ended the call after speaking. When she turned to look at Devan, she saw his cold expression.
“About our marriage, could we keep it secret for now? At least until the day of my engagement to Ronan,” Alexa said seriously. To be honest, she was afraid Devan would inform the Alistair family before she could carry out her plan.
Devan looked away from Alexa without responding. Still wearing his cold expression, he said, “I don’t like you talking to another man when you’re with me. So next time, I hope you remember that.”
Alexa pressed her lips together.
“And one more thing. From now on, don’t address me formally. Only do that outside, in front of others, when you’re hiding our marriage.”
There was no rebuttal. Alexa simply nodded slowly.
**
Alexa returned to her father’s residence after finishing her business with Devan. She only intended to take some of her clothes; her departure would not be questioned by her family.
No one cared about her.
“Alexa.”
The voice, so disgusting to Alexa’s ears, made her stop in her tracks. When she turned her head to the left, her gaze landed on Felicya, who was walking toward her.
And, as usual, her stepsister wore an angelic expression, attracting everyone’s attention with her fake smile.
Still silent with a cold gaze, Alexa waited until Felicya stood in front of her.
“Alexa, Ronan said you stopped being his assistant. Why?”
Fortunately, Alexa had good self-control. Even though she had hated Felicya long before discovering the affair between Felicya and Ronan, Alexa maintained a calm demeanor.
“Yes, I’ll be getting engaged to him soon. It’s natural that I want to quit, because after we’re married, I’ll focus on taking care of the household,” Alexa said with an unreadable look. “Besides, Ronan’s mother wants grandchildren soon, so I want to focus on my health.”
As she spoke, Alexa observed the slight change in Felicya’s expression.
“Ronan’s mother likes me very much, so I’ll work hard to please her as well.”
Felicya continued to smile, though irritation flickered beneath it as Alexa flaunted herself. “Then why did Ronan say you’re moving to Father’s company?”
“Just an excuse,” Alexa replied calmly. She stepped closer, standing very near Felicya. As she touched a strand of Felicya’s hair, Alexa continued, “You’re that close to Ronan that he told you about my resignation? Is this what they call the relationship between a future sister-in-law and a future sister?”
A faint, almost invisible smile appeared on Devan’s lips when he saw the panic on Alexa’s face. His eyes slowly dropped to her plump lips, but a second later, he forced himself to look away.“Do you remember now?” Devan asked, their faces still dangerously close.Alexa immediately opened her eyes. Her lips pressed into a thin line when she realized Devan had no intention of kissing her like she had assumed. Her cheeks flushed red. Even though she didn’t truly remember, she understood what he meant. Her gaze stayed locked on him as she slowly nodded.“I … remember,” Alexa said hesitantly.Devan withdrew both hands from the edge of the desk. He stepped back, though his eyes remained fixed on her.“What do you remember?”His question made Alexa freeze for a moment. She bit her lower lip hard, her eyes drifting to the wound on Devan’s lip.“Last night … I kissed you and bit you.” Her voice carried a trace of uncertainty. That faint smile reappeared on Devan’s lips. He turned around and wa
Alexa sat absentmindedly in her room. After meeting Valeria, she still hadn’t found an answer to Devan’s anger.“What exactly did I do? Why is he so upset?”She thought hard, but her mind remained blank. She truly couldn’t remember anything.Alexa sat there biting the tip of her thumb nail, forcing herself to recall last night’s events—but the result was the same.“This is really making me uneasy.” She ruffled her hair in frustration. “Why can’t he just tell me directly? Wouldn’t that be easier?”Alexa stood up after battling with her own thoughts for so long. She couldn’t remember anything because she had been drunk. Devan should at least explain if she had truly done something wrong. She stepped out of her room and walked down the stairs toward Devan’s study. When she arrived at the door, her hand lifted to knock. But she hesitated and pulled it back.“But what if he refuses to talk like earlier?”Alexa stood frozen in front of the door.Yet if she didn’t find out, the curiosity wou
Alexa froze, her face turning pale. “D-Did I accidentally hit you and hurt your lip?”Devan’s face remained completely expressionless as he listened to her. After she had forcefully kissed him and even bitten his lip, Devan hadn’t expected that Alexa would truly forget everything.“I’m sorry for getting so drunk last night that I accidentally hit you.” Alexa wrung her fingers together, her eyes filled with guilt.Devan snorted. He looked genuinely annoyed as he walked past Alexa without another word.Meanwhile, Alexa frowned, confused by Devan’s reaction.“Did I really hit him?”She stared at his retreating figure.Biting her lower lip, she tried to remember what had happened last night, but she couldn’t recall a single thing.“He’s not still mad at me, right?” Alexa’s face looked pitiful.**Alexa and Devan sat at the dining table.Alexa stole a glance at Devan, who wore a blank expression. She felt truly afraid and regretful about whatever she had done.“I’m really sorry about what
The next day at the Ronan family residence.Martha shot Ronan a cold stare as he had just taken a seat in front of her. Annoyance was evident on her face as she saw how calm her son remained after ruining his engagement party with Alexa.“It seems like you don’t feel guilty at all toward Alexa, after what you did to her.”Ronan looked at his mother. He remained relaxed, choosing to sip his coffee instead of responding to Martha’s words.“Ronan, do you really not understand the consequences you will have to face? You let go of Alexa, who is clearly the Young Lady of the Ivander family, for the sake of a stepdaughter?” Martha’s voice rose when Ronan ignored her.Placing his cup back on the table, Ronan looked at Martha. “The one I like is Felicya, so I won’t regret letting Alexa go.”“Ronan!” Martha’s voice was shrill. “A woman like Felicya will not bring you anywhere. Felicya is only the stepdaughter of the Ivander family, she is no better than Alexa!”Ronan snorted. “But Alexa is bori
Valeria narrowed her eyes when she heard Devan’s reply. “Wife? What wife? When did Alexa get married?”After speaking, Valeria hiccupped before slumping back onto the sofa. Her consciousness was already as thin as tissue paper.Devan signaled for Mike to take Valeria away, while he approached Alexa, who had her eyes closed with a smile on her lips.“Let’s go home.” Devan extended his hand toward her.But instead of taking his hand, Alexa wagged her index finger in front of his face. “No, no, no. My husband will come pick me up. I want him to carry me.”A faint smile, almost invisible, appeared on Devan’s lips. He immediately bent down and slipped both arms around Alexa’s body.Devan carried Alexa in his arms.“Look carefully. Who am I?” Devan stared at Alexa’s flushed face.Alexa’s eyes opened slightly before her lips curved into a smile. “Ah, right. You’re my husband. Let’s go home.”She wrapped both arms around Devan’s neck.Devan walked out while carrying Alexa, bringing his wife b
Alexa went to a club with Valeria. The two of them rented a private room to have fun together.“Alex, you still haven’t told me—how is it that your jerk of an ex-fiancé’s uncle ended up helping you?” Valeria asked curiously.Alexa widened her smile. “Well, because he knows who’s right.”She lifted her glass and downed the liquid inside the crystal cup.The sweet and bitter taste slid down her throat, slightly burning her chest.“Hm … that means the uncle is much better than that Ronan,” Valeria said before finishing her drink as well.A faint smile curved on Alexa’s lips. Of course, Devan was many times better than Ronan.Back then, Ronan never even cared whether Alexa was okay or not. Every complaint she made was dismissed as if it meant nothing. And Ronan only showed attention when he wanted something.Meanwhile, Devan had come looking for her after just one call—he found her and gave her comfort.Valeria frowned deeply when she saw the sweet smile on Alexa’s face.“Alex, that smile
