Chapter three

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-07-19 08:24:57

We reached in front of a very unfamiliar building. The exterior was painted white, and whole mansion’s fence was laid with barbed wires. The gate of the building was black. There were lights surrounding the building.

The driver blasted his horn and the gate split into two. It opened. Each part of the gate sliding off.

The driver drove in. After the car came to a halt. The driver rushed outside to open the door for me.

‘Thank you,’ I mumbled, as I gathered my dress and stepped out.

As I walked into the house, it still felt like my mind was still with Xavier, my body was just here in this unfamiliar mansion. Which will now be called our new home.

Two women dressed in blue approached me. My eyes widened as they took each step. Each step felt like it was calculated.

‘Good afternoon Ma’am’ They greeted, but I shifted back.

I exhaled. It came with a sharp pain as if hitting my brain cells. ‘Like seriously?’ I laughed, but the laughter was short-lived.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘Come on, did Xavier forget all of a sudden?’

I know he forgets things easily but this? I have repeated over and over again that I wanted our new home all to ourselves.

I wanted no maid, no chef. Just us and us alone.

Now this is the second thing really pissing me off. My husband, My Xavier isn’t here with me. And now this.

The sharp pain came again, but stronger this time ‘Arghhhh’ I yelped in pain as I held my head. My phone fell off my hand.

‘Ma’am’ One of the women rushed forward. I stretched my hand forward, stopping her from getting closer.

The pain didn’t subside but I gathered the strength to bend and pick up my phone. I looked at the screen, luckily it didn’t break.

‘Weird’

I heard one of the maid mutters. It was the one who didn’t rush forward.

I ignored it and walked up the stairs, like I knew where I was going. I could feel their eyes on me.

My wedding gown swept along with me as I walked up the stairs gently.

Reaching the top of the stairs, I turned right. I saw different doors but I held the door knob of the one my eyes caught first. I twisted it and entered.

My eyes caught the bed and I threw myself on it. I threw my heels across the room without caring. My legs already hurt.

My mind began to wander again. Xavier didn’t return my calls. And his phone saying switched off? That was new again honestly.

My phone rang. I jilted up. Maybe it was him. I grabbed my phone that was beside me.

But the caller’s I.D? It was anybody, but Xavier.

I swiped green on my screen- It was Racheal.

‘Racheal’ My voice came out cracked.

‘Renee, what’s wrong?’ Her voice came.

‘I don’t…. I don’t…… just know’ I used every ounce of power in me to fight against the tears that were threatening to tear through me. But it failed.

I burst out crying.

‘I knew it in your voice that something was wrong. Speak to me please’ Her voice came. She also sounded worried.

I didn’t want to bother her, or place my burden on her. She already had her own to deal with.

‘I…I just’

‘Renee. Don’t do that to yourself please. Tell me what’s wrong. I hate to hear you cry’

I wiped the tears that already fell down my cheek, with the back of my hand.

‘Xavier is acting strange. Can you believe he actually left me to go alone today? On our special day,’ I spoke, and sniffled in.

‘Oh my gosh! What’s wrong with him? Right now, Renee, please I need you to get hold of yourself. You know I hate to see you cry’

‘You called at the right time for real Racheal,’ A cough escaped my throat.

‘Sorry babe’ I heard her say.

‘Thank you!’

‘Please try get a hold of yourself, till he gets back’

‘I’ll try my best. All I want is him beside me tonight. That's all. I want nothing else. It isn’t that much to

Ask. Is it?’

‘No, it is not. Please calm down babe’

‘Now it’s all about me. How is your mum?’ I asked, changing the topic. I wanted to know about her mum’s

health.

‘I hope she gets better Renee; the doctor hasn’t been around’

‘What!’ I gasped ‘What’s going on with that hospital?’

‘The nurses are taking care of her and doing a lot of check ups’ Racheal replied.

‘She will be better by God’s grace’ I cheered her on.

‘Amen!’

‘Bye, Racheal take care of mum for now. Okay?’

‘I well. Don’t overthink babe. We’ll have a chat later. Bye’

‘Bye’

The call went flat after the conversation.

My stomach growled. It was hunger.

I lazily drew myself up. I sighted different kinds of flip flops. It was definitely Xavier’s doings.

I placed my leg in one. And again, in another. I chuckled in disbelief.

‘Did he really forget my shoe size?’

I shook my head. I couldn’t count how many times I have been amused today.

I gave up and wore one anyways.

Still in my wedding dress, I opened the door. The cold air hit me. I glanced at my sides and there I saw an

open window. I didn’t see any when I opened to door to go in earlier.

I didn’t want to leave the room until Xavier came home, but my stomach betrayed me.

I went down the stairs and saw the women on blue still standing.

‘Where is the kitchen?’ I spoke to no one in particular. I just wanted an answer to my question.

‘Over there Ma’am’ They chorused at the same time, pointing to where the kitchen was.

‘Thanks,’ I said and walked past them.

I rushed to the deep freezer I sighted. I opened it and everything was there and sealed.

‘Eggs’ I muttered going to the refrigerator. I saw eggs right there. Just what I needed.

Everything was quick. I grabbed the vegetable oil and poured little on the frying pan.

I cracked the egg and poured it inside. When the egg was half cooked, I turned off the electric cooker.

I saw bread and grabbed it. After some minutes, I was done eating.

The thought came to my head. I just had my first breakfast as a married woman ALONE.

I gulped down a bottle of water and walked up the stairs. I could feel their eyes on me, Again.

I shut the door behind me and went back to laying on the bed, waiting for him to come.

After what felt like hours, I heard the door open.

His lips descended on mine, and I was carried away in the moment. My heart thumped so fast in my rib cage. His soft lips? I fucking love that.I wrapped my arms around his neck not wanting to let go.‘So, it was just really stress yesterday?’ I mumbled inaudibly.I glanced at the big wall clock that hung at the dining section. I was already late to workI loosened my arms around his shoulders ‘I need to go freshen up now or else I would be late to work’‘Alright wifey’I could hear the maids stifle a laugh, but I ignored them totally. They aren’t worth it anyway.‘New nickname? I love it’ I poked his nose, turning on the back of my heels and rushed up the stairs. I needed to leave before 9am.I had the driver from last night drop me off at work. I noticed how he stared at me through the rear-view mirror. Probably, to see if I was okay. Last night I sounded like a totally pissed off bride to his ears.Did I? Yes, I did. I am very sure and of course I was more than pissed off.‘Mr. Xav

I felt my heart in my mouth. Still trying to process what he just muttered.‘Xavier!’ I called out, waving my hand in front of him. I aimed at trying to bring him back to reality from whatever dream world he was in.I saw his eyes shift as if he just became aware of his surroundings. Xavier looked round. It wasn’t even funny, if things were not serious, I would have laughed at him. But right now? The humor wasn’t even there.‘Are you alright?’On hearing those words, his gaze landed back on me. He parted his lips ‘Did I scare you?’.‘Are you joking…Xav..ier…I…I…’Before I knew it, tears welled up in my eyelid, then slowly it slid down my cheeks.‘Shit!’ I heard him say.He held my chin ‘Shush. It was just a joke?’‘Just a joke? Are you for real?’ I yanked his hand off my chin.Silence followed. Only the sound of heartbeat could be heard.‘Are you having bad nightmares?’He tilted his head ‘Of course not’‘But you were unwell few minutes ago’ I raised my hand to touch his forehead. I d

I didn’t sleep, I just couldn’t. Taking that nap without seeing Xavier? That wasn’t going to happen. The room was dark. I had turned off the lights. My hand went to the lamp on the night stand. I pressed the on button and light came.I saw it. He shifted back.‘Was he surprised to see me still awake?’ I stood up still on my wedding dress and held the long part up.I saw as he proceeded to turn on the lights of the room. I blinked because of the light. There he stood. He bit his lips.‘Xavier. Where did you go?’ I started, still holding up my cloth‘Why are you still dressed in this?’ He just did what I hated. First, his response, as if the name ‘Xavier’ didn’t belong to him. And then, second, he evaded my questions.‘I believe you should answer my question first, before asking me another. A question should always end with an answer, and not another question’ I shot at him. My voice came out sharp, my heart began to do its’ tantrums like I shouldn’t be the one controlling it.Minutes

Everybody had left. It remained just me and him-Xavier alone in the wedding hall. Our wedding would make history, because this is the first wedding I knew of, where the bride and groom were the last to leave the hall.As a little child, I remember attending a wedding with my mum. The bride and groom left the whole guests behind. They drove away in the car they had come with. It’s now over thirty minutes, since Xavier had been on the phone. Only God knows who he was talking to for that long. His back was turned to my face. My naughty brain began to fantasize how my first night with him would be and feel like. Stealthily, I walked over to his back trying to eavesdrop. It was just me being curious. My face fell. It wasn’t long he hung the call. Immediately, Xavier turned. I tried to force a smile through my face. I wondered how it looked to Xavier.‘Trying to eavesdrop uhn’ He held my cheek and shook it slowly. My cheeks blushed red on their own, without me forcing it to. But wait his

Something about Xavier felt different tonight. He no longer smiled the way he usually does, when he sees me.The affectionate glares, the touch and the mesmerizing look he usually gave me were all missing. By the look of things his gestures says otherwise, like he wanted to get things over with as soon as possible.‘Xavier, is everything alright?’ I asked him. He had just stepped into my dressing room. The makeup artiste was still doing her job in making me look aesthetically pleasing. He only gave a slight nod to my question.I was still dressed in my bridal robe. Then his voice came ‘Won’t you get changed? The priest is already here. We can’t keep everyone waiting’ He smiled, but it wasn’t the kind of smile that reached his face.‘Soon’ I replied him. He walked away without saying anything further.‘Please, can you hasten up? I need to join him at the
