Chapter 09

Kayla’s POV

When I received his message, my heart burst into a million different way, emotions I shouldn’t have.

I used to be good with what should be. But the new Mykayla—Kayla isn’t good with rules. I thrive with setting my own rules now.

With shaky hands, I typed my reply. “I’ll be there.”

He replied. “See you at 8.” Cold. Distant. Professional. As we should be.

Rowan invited me to his place to discuss our agreement. Rules and condition should be set. Boundaries tighten as our worlds would collide.

But instead of thinking how this advancement would benefit my long term plans, but my mind wandered around his touch, his smell, his voice, and everything in between.

“Fuck.” I massaged my temple and sat at the corner of my bed, full of clothes.

I’ve been searching for the right dress to wear for the past hours. It’s almost time to leave but I was still confuse.

This shouldn’t stress me out, this is merely a business meeting and nothing more. With an aching head, I choose the most decent dress. A black long sleeve bodycon paired with a stiletto.

Before I could change my mind, I left my apartment, my guards didn’t utter a word as I leave. Rowan must’ve informed them.

The elevator ride was quick though I was lost in thoughts. Past and present and here I was still connected to Rowan somehow, but at the end of the day I know there were no rooms of us in the future.

Rowan opened the door, his eyes immediately traveling to my body, stubbly licking his lips before reaching my eyes. I smiled sweetly despite the heat forming to my nape.

We were inches apart but I could feel the warmth of his body. He’s wearing a white polo shirt that made his biceps pop, almost tearing the clothing with his manliness.

“Come in.” His voice hoarse.

I stepped inside, accidentally brushing his arms, we both paused at the sudden touch. Our skin igniting.

I close my eyes tightly to escape this moment for a while but his woody scent filled my nose, screaming intense, sophisticated, and dominant.

“You have a lovely home.” My voice questionably soft.

Before this could consume me I immediately pushed the forbidden emotions in the back of my mind.

I was here or business, nothing more. There’s no rooms for error, emotions, and relationships.

We headed to his study where I was awed with the amount of books piled in the wall. In the center was leather coach and at the end of the room was his office table, with the overview of the city, the lights illuminating the room. The room smelled like him and old books.

We settled in the couch, He sat at the middle while I settled at the end where the distance could save me from the thoughts running through my head.

He scanned the distance between us before handing me an envelope. I ignore his stare and carefully read the documents.

“The terms and condition of this arrangement is our guideline for this agreement as we discussed last time. Just gave me the word if you want to add some things.”

His words professional… like he’s drawing the line. I should commend to that however, I hated it more than I should have. He seems different.

I tried to focus on the paper instead but our proximity is distracting me. His eyes fixed on me as I read making my heart thump.

“No other man or woman in the duration of the contract?” His brows raised as I asked.

“It’s not appropriate to date someone else while being “in a relationship” with me. I don’t like sharing, baby.” His voice low almost growling.

Sensations that I’m pushing aside resurfaced with no warning. Heat crawled to every part of my body, and the longer we stay here, the more I couldn’t deny the growing feelings with the man I shouldn’t have.

“Right.” I could hardly recognize my voice. I was lost in his eyes, speaking in language I wish don’t speak. “Stop looking at me like that.” My voice low, almost sensual. Flirty even.

“If we are to be in a relationship, you should get used to the attention I give you.” I pressed my lips into a thin line. My throat suddenly dry with his remarks.

My body jolted with electricity. This conversation is dangerous.

“You’re right.” I crossed my legs that caught his attention, making him gulp. I smirked. “Aside from this list, I want to add that we attend an event together thrice a month.”

“Uhuh,” his mouth parted. Nodding absentmindedly, eyes still fixed at my legs. His thumb playing with his lips.

“That’s set then.” I whispered.

“Yes.” His jaw clenched as I rub my hands to my legs.

I’d be damned, I shouldn’t provoke the beast in Rowan but I couldn’t help but get the satisfaction I’ve been craving. His undivided attention on me, and the power I hold over him in this moment.

I uncross my legs, eyes fixated to Rowan, his disappointed evident but I bend down to the center table, arching my back that made him cough a little. I smirked as I signed the paper, clearly showing how my hands tremble with forbidden emotions bolting up.

His hands rested at the backrest of the couch as I handed him the paper, giving him an innocent smile. “You’ll be the death of me.” His words hard and precise.

“Why is that?” He stare at my face like he’s searching for something but shook his head and signed the paper.

I eyed him, his arms flexed. Vein on his temple thump. Ears red. He caughted me staring but didn’t utter a word before closing the distance between us.

“This is going to be fun, baby.” He whispered as he put his arms around my waist and pulling me to him, closing the painful distance between us.

His professionalism earlier was gone, replaced by emotions I couldn’t name.

He put his hands on my cheeks, stared at me for a moment before crashing his lips to mine.

Waves of emotions I’ve been pushing aside surfaced but he pulled away immediately. “Our agreement had been signed and sealed.”

Chapter 11Kayla’s POVAlison was left tongue-tied last night and the family Jones became a laughingstock—though, there weren’t Jones. I am.But it gave me a sense of satisfaction how people criticize them, something that they deserve but not enough for my liking. They deserve more than to be laughed at after the pain that they cost me, and the stolen name along with the stolen company that they don’t deserve. So when Karen showed up at my workplace I was anything but surprise.High cheek bones. bold lipstick. High ponytail. Karen was beautiful though her beauty was consuming. Enough to secure a husband but not enough to be respected. Grace wasn’t one of her characteristic, so when she married my father, she tried to hide her county side girl mannerism. She lack elegance something my mother possesses even in her sleep. For years of managing my family business, she lacked the skills and character of a CEO. Despite the company’s standing in the industry due to her lack of knowledge crac

Chapter 10Kayla’s POVThe soft brush of paint in the canvas caught my attention in contrast to what the art is showing, the strong waves painted with softness but it was anything but.Waves met the shore beautifully along with the golden sunset. It was almost the same that night however waves weren’t soft and the sky was in total darkness.Waves of strong current can crash your body to the point of paralysis. The golden scenery only last for a moment before the darkness meet the ocean and together you create a beautiful danger. It bought back memories that I tried to put behind but it also revealed battle scars no one can take.“Predictable aren’t you?”I faced her. Her eyes focused on the painting while my brows raised at her sudden friendliness. This is unlike Alison so I’m assuming Karen but her up to this.“I’m not sure though.” I stare at the painting instead of her. People around showing interest to the painting beside us, eavesdropping I’m sure.“It’s a beautiful painting. I

Chapter 08Kyla’s POVWeb of pictures in my wall turned my vision red, for the past years I have been monitoring and keeping tabs of Alison and Karen’s activity. Documents are scattered on the floor, every article about them I kept like a prized trophy.Along with those pictures was Rowan and his connection to my so-called enemy. I lied, I knew who he was. I knew what had he been up to, his activities, his favorite restaurant, his friends, and the party that he goes to. And I would lie if I said that I didn’t once followed him on a certain event to see him in person… the person who I was supposed to marry. But the incident with Caleb and when Rowan saved me, that was pure coincidence. The odds are in my favor.I got close to the Hermoso Group’s Chairwoman—Nena, with a purpose. I needed a upper hand to help me when things are out of my control and my hard work didn’t go unnoticed. So, when I happen to witness how she was cornered in a dark-alley with no guards on site I didn’t hesitate

Chapter 07Rowan’s POVI sat across the table with Mykayla, her smile spreading across her lips made me want to rip it apart. The noise from our parents conversation and the tableware muted from the anger when she tried to hold my hands.I pulled my hands away and glared at her but ignore my scowl, just like she always does in the past years. However, the longer that I get to know her the more I hate her.Years ago, when I first met her she was different that made me thought that this arrangement wasn’t bad. But things had changed when I left abroad for college and only to come back when I graduated, she was different. It was like she was a different person.Maybe I should blame her step-mother for raising her after her parents died. She became different then… but I don’t know there’s this feeling I couldn’t shake off. Something is off.“What did you say about breaking the engagement?” She smiled sweetly, but it was anything but sweet. “Your parents can’t make you do anything, huh?” I

He knows why I’m here, he had been keeping tabs in my recent activities.“I’m assuming Mykayla had been talking?” He spoke, continuing signing some stupid papers. Didn’t even raise his head to look at me.I remained standing away from him, I know I was capable of doing violence… even to my own father. My father had never been present in my life, he wasn’t the type of father every child dreams of, instead he buried himself to work and when I was old enough he honed me to the man that I am now… workaholic, just like him.“She had a lot to say.”Just thinking about her made my skin crawl from irritation. Years of torture and no matter how hard I pushed away, they find a way to stay grounded and annoy me.“You’ve known about the engagement f
