Chapter 5

Author: Mint Soda
I curled up under the covers, tossing and turning as tears soaked my pillow. Every time I closed my eyes, those cruel words replayed in my mind like a recurring nightmare.

It wasn't until the early hours of the morning, just as I was drifting into a hazy sleep, that a cold body pressed against mine.

"You left your phone in the private room. Why didn't you borrow someone's to message me? I was worried sick when you didn't pick up."

I snapped awake, struggling to break free from his hold. "I was just exhausted when I got home. I forgot."

Kieran locked his arms around my waist, pinning me in place. "Esty, I've been worrying about you all night, yet here you are, sleeping like a baby. Didn't we agree you'd wait up to give me my gift? Where is it?"

The image of the carefully wrapped box hidden in my drawer flashed through my mind, and my eyes stung again. "I lost it."

Kieran didn't press the issue. Instead, he nipped at my ear, his hot breath trailing down my neck. "It's fine. You're the only gift I need. I just want you to always be with me."

Sensing what was coming, I bit down hard on the webbing of his hand. He let out a low groan of pain and reflexively let go.

I scrambled to put some distance between us and muttered, "I'm not feeling well tonight."

As long as I was still living under the Brocks' roof, I couldn't afford a total fallout.

Frowning, Kieran stared at me through the darkness for a long time. In the end, he sighed and pulled me back into his chest. "Fine. I won't touch you. Just sleep."

Maybe the birthday party had drained him because his breathing soon became rhythmic.

Then, his phone on the nightstand vibrated. Somehow, almost on instinct, I unlocked it and tapped on a notification.

It was a group chat.

Photos were flooding in, one after another, all featuring the same pair—Kieran and a young woman who looked polished and elegant from head to toe.

My heart skipped a beat.

This had to be Vivian Fowler, the woman he intended to marry.

In one photo, Kieran had his arm around her waist while they shared a deep kiss under a sky full of fireworks.

The messages kept scrolling by.

"Kieran really is head over heels for Vivian. It's his birthday, yet he spent it putting on a fireworks show for her."

"You don't get it. That's what you call effort. His stepsister definitely doesn't get that treatment. She's just for blowing off steam. LOL."

"Good thing she left early. It would've been awkward if she bumped into Vivian."

"Who cares? They're getting married on April 8th anyway. That's two weeks away. Even if she found out today, the revenge would be just as sweet."

Kieran claimed to have been worried sick, but he was actually setting off fireworks for his fiancee.

It felt like my heart had been sliced open, bleeding out in the dark.

I wiped my tears, carefully climbed over the sleeping Kieran, and grabbed my phone. The moment the screen lit up, a missed call notification popped up. It was from Kieran.

I choked back a sob and deleted the log. Then, I opened my email. I stared at the draft I had written days ago but never had the courage to send.

I deleted it, letter by letter, and typed a new one.

"Hi, I'm pleased to accept the dance troupe's invitation to perform abroad. I will be departing on…"

I paused, glancing back at Kieran's phone before finishing the sentence.

"I will be departing on April 8th."

Perhaps fearing that I would leave early, Kieran stayed out of my sight for the next few days. But whenever I chatted with Mom in her hospital room, I could sense a burning gaze fixed on me. Even when we went for walks outside, a shadow followed us from a distance. As long as he didn't disrupt my life, I couldn’t be bothered to deal with him. After all, it was only a few days.On the day Mom was discharged, I booked an afternoon flight to Valereth, the next stop on the dance troupe's tour. After settling her back at the Brock residence, I prepared to head to the airport.Andre, oblivious to the history between Kieran and me, immediately insisted that Kieran drive me.I thought about it for a moment and agreed. As soon as I got into the car, I pulled on an eye mask to sleep. I felt Kieran's gaze lingering on me throughout the drive. I only opened my eyes when we reached the airport.Just as I was about to step out, Kieran grabbed my wrist, his expression twisted with pain. "Esty,

During the three years abroad, I traveled with the dance troupe to almost every country in Eldarion. We never stayed longer than ten days in one place.Seeing the world on such a vast scale, I finally realized how wrong I had been to almost turn down the troupe's invitation for the sake of love.During one of the troupe's breaks, I had planned a quiet trip to a small town at the foot of the Silvaran Peaks to relax when I got a call that Mom had been admitted to the hospital.I immediately booked the next flight back to Calyndra. When I arrived and saw Mom lying safely in the hospital bed, I finally relaxed. She hadn't known I was coming. Tears of surprise streamed down her face when she saw me. "Esty, why are you back? It was just an appendix surgery. It's not a big deal."She said those words, but she wouldn't let go of my hand. After three years apart, I noticed a few strands of white in her hair, and my chest tightened. I had gone abroad knowing Andre would take good care of

I didn't hear about Kieran's escape from his wedding until my third day in Gryndale. After finally shaking off the jet lag, I listened as Mom recounted the entire ordeal over the phone.Andre and the Fowlers were beyond furious. Vivian had cried herself into unconsciousness and was sent to the hospital. Yet, Kieran refused to say a single word about where he had gone. Finally, Mom asked cautiously, "Esty, the moment you left for abroad, Kieran ran off from his wedding. Do you think he…"I paused for a second, then laughed it off. Surely there was another explanation. Kieran wouldn't run off from the wedding for me.Mom relaxed and moved on to other topics.By the time we finished, it was already late at night. Just as I was about to sleep, my phone rang. It was Kieran.I hesitated, unsure whether to answer.Everything I needed to say was already written in that letter. But Mom was still living under the Brocks' roof, so I picked up the call."Esther Hudson, who allowed you to g

Kieran's wedding was a massive production, complete with a full security detail to ensure everything went off without a hitch. His friends crowded around him, laughing and trading jokes."Finally, the big day. Do you guys think Kieran's stepsister is actually going to show up and object?""She wouldn't dare. Kieran said she's been quiet since she found out about the wedding. Just a little jealous and not replying to his messages."Someone tutted and said, "Really the type to play the mistress role. At least she knows her place."Meanwhile, Kieran glanced at his empty chat screen, feeling uneasy. "If Esther shows up, keep an eye on her. She's been too quiet lately. I worry she might cause trouble at the wedding."His friends grinned and agreed. "No problem, we'll watch your stepsister.""But Kieran, weren't you doing this to get back at her mother? Why not spill that Esther's a mistress during the wedding? Everyone will roast her for shamelessly seducing her brother."They all n

After lunch, Kieran saw off Vivian's family.Back home, I finally got a reply from the dance troupe. "We're really looking forward to having you! Our first tour stop will be Gryndale!"After booking my flight to Gryndale on April 8th, I finally told Mom and Andre I'd be leaving.Mom's eyes welled up. "Esty, how could you not talk to me about such a big thing? You've never been away from me before, and now you're going abroad?"I buried my face in her shoulder, forcing a light tone. "Mom, performing on the international stage has always been my dream. You should be proud of me. Besides, I'm 23 years old now. I can't stay by your side forever."Andre stepped in to comfort her. "Esty is a grown-up now. She should have her own life. Chasing dreams isn't a bad thing. Esty, I support you."Mom knew he was right. It was just hard for her to swallow the fact that I was leaving. She wiped her eyes and cupped my face. "Take care of yourself out there. Promise you'll check in every single

Before I could finish speaking, Kieran's phone rang. The moment I saw Vivian's name flash across the screen, my eyes stung. I didn't know what was being said on the other end, but Kieran's eyes shone with a genuine, indulgent warmth.I froze for a moment.I'd seen that look every night. But at night, it had been just an act. Now, this was real. After hanging up, Kieran kissed my forehead. "Esty, I'll be busy with the wedding for a while. Once it's over, I'll make it up to you. Don't get jealous, okay?"I stayed silent for a beat before I wiped my tears and nodded.By the time the wedding came, Kieran would see that I'd never get jealous over him again. After he left, I went to the women's restroom to wash my face. I didn't want to return to the table with red, puffy eyes and worry Mom.But when I looked up, there was Vivian.Gone was the soft, elegant image from the table. Her gaze was dripping with contempt. "Trying to seduce your brother? How shameless!"I froze. She knew.
