Eliza's POV

The morning of the groundbreaking dawned clear and cold.

I stood at the window of my study, watching the sun rise over the garden. The tree was bare now, its branches reaching toward the sky like fingers. Winter had come, but there was warmth in the house the warmth of family, of hope, of new beginnings.

Today, we broke ground on Maya's House.

Clara appeared in the doorway. "Ready?"

"Ready."

Eliza's POVThe first sign of trouble came three weeks after the groundbreaking.I was in the study when Clara burst through the door, her face pale."The site. Someone's been there.""What do you mean?""The foundation. The cement we poured last week. It's ruined. Someone drilled into it. Weakened the whole structure."I stood. "Sabotage?""Has to be. The foreman found it this morning. If we hadn't caught it, the whole building could have collapsed."My blood went cold. "Who knew about the site?""Everyone. It's not a secret. But the workers, the contractors they've all been vetted.""Clearly not well enough."The SiteThe construction site was chaos.Workers stood in clusters, murmuring. The foreman, a weathered man named Castillo, met me at the gate."Ms. Sterling. I'm sorry. We should have caught this sooner.""Show me."He led me to the

  • IN LOVE WITH HIS ENEMY   Chapter 114 - The family she lost

Eliza's POV Maya had been with us for five months when the letter arrived. She was different now. Brighter. She laughed more. She'd made friends at school real friends, not just the children at Clara's House. She was learning to draw, to play the piano, to be a child. But sometimes, late at night, I'd find her in the garden, staring at the stars. Lost in thought. Remembering. The letter came on a Thursday. Addressed to Maya. Care of Clara's House. I didn't open it. That wasn't my place. I carried it to her room and knocked on the door. "Someone wrote to you." She took the envelope. Looked at the handwriting. Her face went pale. "What is it?" She didn't answer. Just opened it. Read it. Her hands started to shake. "Maya?" She handed me the letter. Dear Maya, My name i

  • IN LOVE WITH HIS ENEMY   CHAPTER 112 - The outside world

Eliza's POVSpring came early that year. The garden burst into bloom roses, lavender, the sapling Dmitri had planted now tall enough to cast a small shadow. The children ran through the grass, their laughter echoing off the house, their faces brighter than they'd been in months.Maya was the first to ask about school."I want to learn things," she said one morning, sitting beside me on the bench. Eliza's POV The words on Adam’s phone burned behind my eyes even after the screen went black: “She took the bait. Moving to Phase 2.” Chloe’s name above them. Eliza's POV The car smelled of clean leather and faint cedar. I sat in the back seat shaking so hard my teeth clicked together. Tears dried sticky on my cheeks. Adam didn’t say a word. • IN LOVE WITH HIS ENEMY   Chapter 2

Eliza's POV The door wasn’t locked. It stood open just a crack, enough for sound to slip out.A laugh floated through the gap. High, smooth, musical. Chloe’s laugh.
