When Lucas arrived at Mildred's house, he could hear her quietly sobbing inside the living room. The door was not shut, it was kept half way open. Mildred apparently was expecting Lucas to come after her. Because she was crying Lucas pleaded with Nicole not to come inside with him to not aggravate the situation even more but he allowed her to stay close enough to the door to hear everything that was going to be said.
Lucas knocked gently and went in.
"Why are you here with her? To further compound my mystery?!", Mildred asked, not too pleased to see him anymore.
"I now know the true reason why you are so upset with Nicole. I wished I had figured it out earlier but I didn't. It took me this long to figure it out but I am sorry I made you suffer", Lucas sa

Smith was dropped off at Nicole's place by 4 AM in the morning, when they returned from the night club by Charles. Nicole was sleepy and went straight to bed. Angela was equally sleepy and given that she sometimes sleeps over at Nicole's place, went in to sleep along with her best friend. She also needed to hear the story of Nicole's new found love later in the morning. Charles lived in the opposite direction from where Smith lived, so he drove back home alone, leaving Smith as the odd one out and having not had a great night with Nicole, couldn't invite himself in and had to go home.He was upset about this, as he walked home alone.
