It was a Friday, so I left work early, picked Rai up from school, and we went to the restaurant. Once I parked the car, Rai and I stepped out. We were on our way out the door when my wrist was suddenly grabbed, and I turned sharply to see Ralph covered in a hoodie and glasses over his eyes.

I beamed, “Ralph."

He removed his glasses and looked down at Rai, who was looking at him with interest. “Who is this?”

“This is Rai, my son.”

His eyes met mine too quickly as if he had been struck by lightning. The expression nearly tugged out a laugh from me but I held it back. “You are married?” he blurted out.

I shrugged. "Well, I have gone through two lifetimes without you; who knows how I will fare in this one?" Two could play the game, and he fell for it as his eyes darkened and he yanked me close to his face by the arm. He knew how I felt; he duped me into thinking he did not know who I was.
