Chapter 4

Hayden POV

I took some days secretly watching my mate and gathered some information about her, plus where she lives with her parents and twin siblings. I sometimes see her seeming lost during a class and the few times I get to catch a glimpse of her smiling or laughing, those were the best moments for me. She was beautiful and her beauty radiates whenever she smiles and quite strangely,my lips happen to curl into a smile when I see her smiling and it quickly vanishes whenever I sense someone was definitely watching me.

Aiden couldn't stop acting restless whenever he perceived her scent. He kept howling inside me and trying to get me to go talk to her and that I finally decided to do during a lunch break.

I had walked into the cafeteria and my eyes caught her. She was seated at the middle of the table. My lips parted in excitement just by catching a glimpse of her.

Go get her! Aiden echoed in my mind pushing me to start walking up to her. He really is quite impatient.

Almost reaching her, I flashed my usual boyish smile at her sister seated opposite her and she waved at me.

"Who are you waving…" my mate paused as she stared back at me and I stopped behind her.

"Hi," I said and she smiled.

"Hi,"she replied before taking her proper seat position and stared at her sister.

"Um, hope you girls don't mind me joining you at this table?" I asked. Monna shook her head and shrugged.

"Uh, we wouldn't," she said and I hauled up the empty seat and slightly pushed it closer to my mate's seat before sitting down.

"You girls had lunch already?" I asked, not wanting to get things awkward and both nodded.

"What about you, Hayden?" Monna asked.

 I answered."Nah. I'm not hungry."

"I've been meaning to tell you this," Monna said and paused. She glanced at her sister who grabbed a bottle of water from the table and said, almost in a whisper to me.

"Your perfect hazel eyes are quite seductive…" She was cut short by my mate who choked the water she was drinking and coughed. I jerked up and held her shoulder.

"Are you okay?" I asked, staring down at her intensely. She lifted up her gaze to me, obviously stunned by my action.

"I'm fine," she said and coughed slightly, glancing at some students in the cafeteria whose attention I had drawn by my outburst.

I quickly sat down and glanced at Monna.

"Are you okay, Kathrina?" Monna asked and she nodded.

"Um, I'll excuse you both now." Monna stood up.

"Why?" My mate asked, stopping her before glancing at me with the corner of her eye. I could sense she was going to be a bit uncomfortable with us alone.

"Hm? I got someone waiting for me. See ya." Monna left before my mate could stop her with another question.

Good, this is what I had wished for deep down in me, to spend some time with my found mate, even though it's short.

I kept staring at her for a few minutes. She didn't say a word and I noticed she was avoiding my gaze, probably shy.

C'mon, don't just stare at her like a moron, Aiden scolded me in my mind. Yeah, she's way pretty, I know, but she might be getting more uncomfortable if you stay quiet and at worst, she might just quickly excuse herself and leave. Go, man. Start a convo with her, now! Aiden urged.

I really am not a good convo starter, I have to admit, most especially with humans. That's why I don't enjoy communicating with them.

If that's the case, then why come down to this town to continue schooling in an all-humans school? Yes, you presumably would want to ask me that. But here's the secret truth.

I'm past twenty three and I've finished school in my pack's school, closely five years ago.

Almost two

years ago, when I hadn't yet found my mate even after crossing eighteen, I had sought permission from my late father, the previous alpha, alpha Blake, to let me come down to this town in search of my mate. Aiden had persuaded me to because he felt my mate was probably lurking in the human town and he was so right.

My father had refused to let me go because if I did, it would be against the peace-beneficial treaty signed a century ago, between the werewolf world and the humans after a bloody battle which took the lives of huge numbers of humans and likely werewolves too, though we conquered them.

According to my father, we were ragefully haunted by werewolf hunters years ago. They never could stand to catch a glimpse of us. They consider us dreadful and intolerable and mostly detest us for our nature but it wasn't a different thing too with us. Werewolves also loathe humans and we consider them inferior.

My dad said a werewolf was likely to tear apart any human he comes across with immediately especially when they sense it's a werewolf hunter.

But the humans weren't all weak as they had thought then because during the war which broke out after countless deaths of the humans, humans had fought with every mechanism and explosive they had created for their physical strength couldn't match up with ours.

The alpha kings and other alphas then finally decided to accept the proposal of the humans after hundreds of wolves lost their lives and they signed the peace treaty which would be beneficial to both parties.

It was declared that the wolves would seclude themselves from the humans and would not trespass and that was the same for the humans.

And as years passed by after the treaty was signed, no wars cropped up. Both humans and Werewolves lived distinctly.

My late father had only given me permission to go into the town after I had given him my word that I was not going to harm any human, I was going to keep my identity a secret and will still live in the packhouse to take care of the pack after I take on as the alpha when he passes away and that I've sincerely been doing all these while.

I'm glad no werewolf hunter existed in lake town and I doubt there's someone in this town who can detect I'm a wolf.

I had learned to control my temper from my father before he died and so, I don't pounce viciously at any human who pisses me off.

I hadn't come to lake town alone then. I had come with a best friend who now, likely has a strong aversion towards me due to an unintentional action of mine…

You better cut it off. Don't tell me it's taking you this long to come up with something to start a convo with your mate? Get on it! Aiden said, tersely jolting me from my thoughts.

I cleared my throat and said:

"Hmm, I'm Hayden. What about you?" I asked, obviously startling my mate a bit, who seemed to be lost.

"I'm Kathrina," she said and flashed a smile at me.

"You've got a nice name," I said, making her flick a stare at me." It suits someone as beautiful as you."

She chuckled, I bet her uncomfortableness was probably waving away.

"Thank you," she said and tucked her hair behind her right ear.

"You recently started attending this school. I've never seen you until that day before." She nodded.

"I went through junior high school here but went over to live with my gram for nearly two years and I'm back to finish high school and graduate in Grace Hood High."

"That's good," I said and she shrugged.

"But, why did you leave the town for that long?" I asked,a bit curious.

"I'm quite attached to my gram. She was endearing to me."

"Oh…was?" I asked with an arched brow and her expression went a bit dark..

"She…passed away a few weeks ago," she said and my heart ached to see her pulling up a long face.

I held up my hand and placed it on hers on the table, making her gaze at me with a kind of teary eyes.

"I'm sorry about that," I apologized. If I had known better, I wouldn't have asked her about her gram.

Your bit of curiosity got the best of you, donkey, my wolf lashed at me in my mind. I can't believe him sometimes. He probably felt saddened too by Kathrina's loss.

"I didn't mean to…"

It's okay. I just need to forget about it soon." She chuckled and glanced at my hand covering hers. I quickly pulled it back.

"So, what about you Hayden?" She asked

"What?" I was uncertain of what she wanted to know about me. I hope I don't screw up.

"I meant, were you?"

"Huh?"

"You moved in with your family to lake town, maybe a year ago? I really haven't seen you around before my departure." I fixed my gaze at her.

What am I going to say now? Tell her that I don't live here because I'm not human? No, that would be huge. She probably would despise me if she gets to know about my true identity.

But, you won't be able to keep it a secret from her? She's your mate! Aiden said and I exhaled.

Not now, I can't just tell her all about myself and my true identity. I need to get to know my mate better.

I'm not going to scare her away by telling her my true identity. No, I fucking won't. I've found my mate after such a long time. I'm not looking forward to pushing her away by telling her of my identity.

"Hello?" She snapped at me and laughed.

"Zoned out?"

"No. I was just…lost in your gorgeous eyes a while ago," I flattered and I saw her cheek reddened suddenly. She was obviously flushed. I grinned and she laughed, looking aside. I'm glad I'm having an effect on her.

"So? You recently moved into the town?" She brought up the question again, fuck.

"Um, yes. I started living here about…over a year ago," I lied.

"And you…" the bell rang, interrupting and I glanced at some students who were now heading out of the cafeteria.

Holly shit, lunch break is over. How great is that? Aiden asked rhetorically in my mind, and he growled.

Time really goes fast. It fucking doesn't wait for anyone.
