Chapter 3

Penulis: Perfect Timing
Once outside, I was too scared to get a cab, so I ran through the back alley until I was completely exhausted.

I stopped at a payphone and dialed the number I had memorized last night. The phone rang for a long time before someone finally picked up.

"Hello, who is this?"

It was Dane's voice, calm and distant as usual.

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

After a while, Dane said, "Hello? If you don't speak, I'm hanging up."

"Mr. Smith... It's me." My voice was so hoarse I barely recognized it.

The other end went silent. A full half minute passed before Dane spoke again, his voice barely shaking. "Ms. Jones? Is that you? Where are you now?"

My tears rolled down my cheeks. "Mr. Smith, I..."

I gave him the address, then crouched down on the ground and couldn't say another word.

Less than twenty minutes later, a convoy of black cars pulled up in front of me.

Dane got out of one of the cars and quickly walked toward me. When he saw the state I was in, his eyes reddened.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Jones. You must have gone through a lot."

I was taken back to the estate that had only ever existed in my "delusions".

My dad, Richard Jones, was waiting for me in the living room. When he saw me, he immediately got up. The pain and guilt in his eyes were overwhelming.

"You're home. That's… That's all that matters."

He wanted to hug me, but when his hands reached me, he pulled them back, as if he was afraid of hurting me. I knew he was blaming himself.

Three years ago, I had married Kyle and moved out to start our own life despite his objections.

At first, we stayed in touch frequently.

Later, Kyle said my condition was worsening and that I needed some quiet rest. Then, he cut off all contact between me and my family.

Dad had sent people to look for me, but Kyle blocked them with one excuse after another. He said I didn't want to see anyone. He said I was receiving treatment and shouldn't be disturbed.

Dad thought I was having post-wedding blues and didn't want to put too much pressure on me, so he transferred funds to my account every month instead.

He thought that as long as I could live without worrying about money, I would get better eventually.

He never imagined his precious daughter had been treated like a psychiatric patient by his son-in-law and imprisoned for three whole years.

"Dad, I'm fine."

I tried to force out a smile.

The family doctor arrived quickly and gave me a full examination. The results showed that my body was extremely weak, and the long-term use of a powerful sedative had damaged my nervous system.

"High doses of this drug can cause hallucinations, paramnesia, and even permanent brain damage," he explained.

The doctor's words were particularly devastating to me.

So, I was never sick. I had been poisoned.

My dad's expression turned frighteningly dark as he slammed his fist onto the table.

"Kyle Weiss!"

He gritted his teeth and forced out each word.

"I'll make him wish he were dead!"

That night, I moved back into the room I had left three years ago. The pink bed with frills, the wall covered with stuffed animals, everything was the same as when I had left.

Yet it all felt unbearably unfamiliar.

After taking a shower and changing into clean clothes, I looked at myself in the mirror. My complexion was pallid, my eyes were hollow, and I was so thin I was almost nothing but a walking sack of bones.

Was this still the same Aria Jones who used to be so prideful and radiant?

I didn't want to look at this face anymore.

The next day, I had Dane bring in the best stylist and nutritionist.

I had my dry hair cut and changed it into something neat and short. I started working out and focused on getting myself healthy again.

I wanted to take back the three years I had lost, piece by piece.

A week later, I stood in front of the mirror and could already see traces of my old self.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered, and Kyle's anxious, furious voice came through.

"Aria, where the hell are you?!"

I looked down at Kyle, my eyes cold. "Where's the diary?"The smile on Kyle's face froze. He reacted quickly and crawled up from the floor, putting on a smug look. "You want the diary? Sure."He rubbed his hands together and named an outrageous price. "Give me a million dollars. No, ten million! Arrange a new identity for me and send me overseas. Only then will I give you the diary. I promise I'll never show up in front of you again!"He thought he had found my weakness, but I simply laughed. "Kyle, I think you've misunderstood something."I stepped forward and took the diary from his hand. "What makes you think you're in a position to negotiate with me?"I tore the diary to pieces right in front of him, page by page. Then I threw them into the burn barrel beside me. Flames leaped up and swallowed the scraps of paper instantly.Kyle stared with eyes wide, as if he was overwhelmed by the shock. "You... What are you doing? Are you insane?""Insane?" I looked at him, my smile

The divorce went smoothly. Kyle's leg was broken, and he was lying in the hospital, abandoned and pathetic. When my lawyer threw the divorce papers and a thick stack of evidence in front of him, he didn't even have the strength to fight back. The evidence detailed how he had drugged me over the past three years, transferred my assets, and kept a mistress on the side.Any one of those things would have been enough to destroy his reputation and put him in prison. He knew better than to fight it and signed, leaving him with nothing.Legally, he and I had nothing to do with each other anymore, but I knew this wasn't over. What I wanted was not just a divorce… I wanted him to pay for everything he had done to me.After Kyle was discharged from the hospital, he and Jessica were evicted by their landlord and ended up on the streets. I put everything I had into that slap on Kyle's face. His face swelled right before my eyes, and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth. The slap left him stunned. He covered his face, staring at me blankly.Winnie was terrified, too. She curled up in the corner of the couch, trembling."You… Aren't you..." Kyle's voice shook. "Aren't you sick?""Sick? Didn't you cure me of it?" I smiled coldly. He finally realized this had all been a trap. A trap that I had set just for him. His face changed color, from pale to even more pallid. In the end, he collapsed to the floor as if he had lost all his strength."No... Impossible!" he muttered to himself, unable to accept the truth. Everything he had worked so hard to build, the control he had been so proud of, all collapsed in that single moment.I couldn't be bothered to look at him again, and I walked over to the oil painting. The painting showed my mom's favorite sunflowers. It had once hung in my bedroom, and it was the fir

I had the driver take me to Kyle and Winnie's so-called "love nest".Once I was at the large apartment downtown, I rang the doorbell.Winnie opened the door, dressed in a silk nightgown. When she saw me, she froze. "Who are you looking for?"I could see a hint of wariness in her eyes. I smiled and said, "I'm here to see Kyle."Winnie's expression shifted, and she scanned me up and down. "You... Who are you?""His wife," I said. The moment I said those words, I could clearly see the color drain from her face. She stood there stunned for a long time before scoffing, as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world. "His wife? His wife is some lunatic he has kept locked up at home for years. Do you even know who you're impersonating?"It looked like Kyle had told her plenty about my "glorious past". I wasn't angry, though. I simply leaned against the doorframe and watched her calmly."Really? Then why don't you call him and ask whether that lunatic wife of his looks

I didn't say anything to Kyle. Kyle seemed to sense something, and his tone softened. "Aria, calm down, alright? Can you come home? I know I was wrong, and I shouldn't have yelled at you. Just come home, and I'll apologize. Where are you? I'll come pick you up."He was still using the same lies to manipulate me.How ridiculous."Kyle," I said calmly. "Let's get a divorce."The other end immediately went silent.A few seconds later, he laughed in a mocking tone. "Divorce? Aria, are you relapsing again? Did you forget what the doctor said? You can't survive on your own out there. You won't even be able to feed yourself if you leave me. Stop throwing a tantrum like a child and tell me where you are."His tone was full of condescension and manipulation. In his eyes, I was someone useless who couldn't live without him."You'll know where I am soon," I said.I hung up and blocked his number. After that, my dad walked in and handed me a folder. "This is everything on Kyle, in
