Lucian’s head snapped to the side from the force of the slap, and at that same moment, a knock sounded at the entrance door.

Claudia blinked rapidly, her eyelashes fluttering as she placed a trembling hand over her chest, trying to steady her racing heartbeat. Fear settled in her stomach as she stared at Lucian’s stunned expression, terrified that he might lash out.

“Baby girl, take a deep breath, okay?” Lucian said softly, his voice calm and soothing as he rubbed his cheek where she had hit him. “You had a nightmare. You just need to relax.”

Claudia nodded weakly and exhaled shakily. “I was… I was being thrown out. They were… they were going to…” Her voice faltered, breaking apart as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Lucian’s eyes softened as he watched her struggle to speak.

“Wait,” she whispered, a flicker of realization crossing her face. “Did I… did I hit you when I woke up?”

Lucian gave a small chuckle and nodded, trying to ease the tension.
