Hannah’s POV

I got home and looked at the clock. I knew my mother's rules and that I should be at her house by seven in the evening or the drama would start before I even walked in. And although it was already close to four, I wasn't worried. I didn't need much, just one of my pre-approved outfits and shoes too, that is if I didn't want her to have a hysterical fit and her husband to grab me by the hair again.

I felt ridiculous in those dresses that looked like potato sacks. They were nothing more than a square of fabric with sleeves, usually in khaki or shades of that color, paired with a beige cardigan; and the cardigan was mandatory, even if it was blazing hot. Black flats on my feet and no makeup on my face. And it wasn't that my mother was tacky, she wasn't, but she said that under no circumstances should I make her look old or compete for attention with her, who was always dressed with maximum elegance and refinement, I might add.
