LOGIN“Thank you, Messyhair—it’s beautiful,” she leaned against me and kissed me. “I’ll have to thank Amber too,” she laughed.
“How did you know?” I asked, surprised.
“I didn’t,” she smiled. “I was just teasing you—but I guessed right,” she laughed. “You slipped up.”
I laughed—she always managed to surprise me with her sharp mind. I adored her.
I drove her home, then headed back and packed up. Amber and Brad were already at our place.
“Did you have a good New Year’s?” Mom asked. “Jane really seems happy. And you do too,” she added cautiously.
“I am happy. I haven’t regretted this change for a second,” I said, hugging her and kissing her forehead.
“I’m glad, son,” she smiled. “No more family weddings this year, right?”
“No, Mom, you’ll have to wait a few more years for that. But maybe the ring will happen this year,” I summed up.
“Dad,” I turned to him as he packed things in the kitchen. “Did you really set me up with Shannon?” I asked, smiling.
“So, you found out,” Dad sighed, motioning for me to sit. “When you applied to that faraway school, it was obvious to most of us that it wouldn’t work,” he added as I settled across from him. “But I hoped, that somehow, with the long-distance relationship, you might manage to survive it. I was worried about Jane too... how she’d handle your jealousy from so far away. But I couldn’t predict everything. I decided to give it time—watch, and see when I’d need to step in.” He sighed. “When you broke up with Jane, we all knew—you’d made a big mistake. And we knew you wouldn’t be able to manage it alone. So when I saw you at the airport, I texted Shannon and asked for a favor.” he smiled “I needed someone who disliked you enough and was open enough to push you to rock bottom. The little girl could have done it too, but I didn’t want to involve her. I wanted you to hit bottom—but under my supervision. So I had to accelerate it.”
“Why didn’t you just tell me not to apply there?” I asked, puzzled.
“We tried,” he said. “Brian did. Uncle Steve. I did. But even your love for Jane couldn’t stop you—you were set on that school. And if we’d flat-out told you not to go, you would’ve thought we were the ones keeping you from being happy. And you would’ve applied anyway—just to prove us wrong.” He sighed “Jane also knew how big of a mistake it was—that’s why she wanted to move with you. Unfortunately, Julie never shared that idea with me. If she had, maybe I could’ve done something… stopped her from ruining her life.” He smiled faintly. “But you handled it—in your own way.”
“You’re right, Dad,” I admitted quietly. “I didn’t care about anyone else. All I could see was my dream—going to that school. But Jenny was right, back on New Year’s Eve.” I chuckled “ My dream wasn’t the school—it was becoming a vet. I set it up all wrong.”
“Jane’s been able to read you like an open book since the day you met,” Dad chuckled. “I’m just glad you finally reached out to her.”
“Then why did you tell me not to look for her?” I asked, confused.
“To let the jealousy sink in,” he laughed. “I needed it to get under your skin.”
“Thank you, Dad—even for involving Shannon,” I said with a smile. “I actually congratulated her, too.”
“You’re welcome. Hopefully, I’ll never need to do it again,” Dad smiled.
“Definitely not. I’m in the right place now,” I added.
“Yes,” he said gently, “I can see that.”
We were still eating lunch when Jenny rang the doorbell.
“Come in, dear,” Mom said cheerfully as she opened the door. “Join us?”
“Sorry if I came too early,” Jenny said as she sat down at the table. “With Adam’s family here, we probably ate earlier than usual.”
Mom served her soup while the rest of us were already eating the main course.
She thanked her and started eating.
“This is delicious, Mrs. Simmons,” Jenny said with a smile.
“What makes you think she made it?” Dad asked, watching Jenny’s reaction with interest.
“She always makes this soup, and it has exactly the same amount of salt as it did before,” Jenny replied.
Amber stood up and disappeared into her room.
“She’s right,” Dad grinned. “Better brace yourself, son.”
“Well,” Amber returned with the envelope. “Let’s see how much bracing my brother actually needs.”
“What was the bet?” Mom asked. I quickly explained.
“Amber, open it and read it out loud, please,” my girlfriend smiled.
Amber unsealed the envelope and began reading.
“Messyhair,” Amber read aloud. “Kevin has a new girl in his life—that’s why he changed his hairstyle, though I already mentioned that at your place.”
Brad chuckled, while Jenny quietly continued eating.
On Sunday, we had lunch at my place. Luckily, after swimming, we both had a good appetite. In the afternoon, we went to his place to play video games.“When will the pool be finished here? Do you know?” Brian asked.“Jenny said in the fall when we come back,” I said. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to spend a day in the gym.”“I won’t even ask,” he laughed. “She’s definitely going to torture you.”By the time I got home, Jenny had already arrived and was unpacking.“I missed you,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “How did the meeting go?”“Well,” she said. “They signed the contract.”“What contract?” I asked, curious.
“Yeah, Jenny always sees right through me,” I admitted.“I know, son,” he smiled. “Good luck. I can’t help you—this is between the two of you.” He laughed.“You bet on this too?” Amber asked, sounding exasperated.“She said she’d figure it out,” I muttered, feeling slightly offended. “You don’t think I’m just going to let it go, do you?”“You’re the boss,” Amber rolled her eyes, while our parents laughed.“Is it already sized?” I asked as I held the box. I remembered correctly—it was a stunning ring.“Yes, bro,” Amber smiled. “Dad asked me for one of those bijou rings she wears in photos, so I knew about it—Mom was the only one who didn’t.”
“Unfortunately, it was all for nothing,” I said, disappointed. “It’s no longer in the store, so there’s nothing to show. Does Jenny know you’re here?” I asked.“No,” Dr. Cox replied. “Mickey is at his friend’s place, and Jane left before us.”“I’m sorry about the ring, Jay,” Mrs. Julie said.“Good thing I pay attention to details too—not just Janie,” Dr. Cox laughed, making everyone look at him.“Adam,” Dad chuckled, “I think you should stop teasing them before they kill you tonight.”“Andrew? Adam?” Both mothers asked at the same time.“Ladies,” Dr. Cox said with a smile, reaching into his inner pocket and placing a blue heart-shaped box on the table. &ldquo
The next day, Dad drove us to the apartment, and I showed them around.“It’s not huge, but it’s perfect for the two of us. Thank you,” I said once we settled in the living room.“I see your girlfriend has made it feel like home,” Mom said, looking around.“Yeah, she’s slowly unpacking everything. Will the rent be covered over the summer too?” I asked, since we hadn’t discussed it yet.“As far as I know, it was leased for several years. Adam handled the paperwork,” Dad said.“If no one’s hungry yet,” Dad continued, “we could head to the store.”“Finally, I get to see my own shop,” Amber said excitedly.“Sis,” I said, “I’ve already been inside, but they
On Friday, Jenny drove home after school, pulling into my parents’ driveway just before dinner. The scent of home-cooked food drifted through the open windows, and as she stepped inside, the family was already gathered, waiting with expectant smiles.“Come in,” Brad said, opening the door. “Dinner’s just about ready.”“Good evening,” Jenny greeted everyone and sat across from me at the table—her usual spot. She seemed a little nervous, which was unusual for her lately.“Everything okay, dear?” Dad noticed.“Messyhair said everyone’s coming to visit our apartment tomorrow, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to be there,” she blurted out.“No problem, dear,” Mom reassured her. “Yes, I could only make time now.” So she took resp
I should’ve looked away. Should’ve stood up and left the room. But I couldn’t. She danced like temptation incarnate—teasing, graceful, slow. When she peeled back her sweatshirt and revealed the black corset beneath, I stood.I crossed to her in two strides, hands slipping around her waist.“What do you think you’re doing?” she giggled as I eased her down onto the couch.I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My fingers were already tugging at her tracksuit, breath shallow. I nearly tore the fabric from her—and my own clothes too—blinded by how much I needed her. She laughed softly, her skin warm under my hands, her smile daring me to break every rule we’d set.“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked again, this time breathlessly, already reacting to my kisses.
“She didn’t get to decide here,” Paul laughed. “And she’s not going to stay single forever. Plus, I trusted you,” he added with a grin.“Seriously?” I was surprised.“Jay,&r
After the vacation, I threw myself back into studying. On weekends, I met up with a friend or two, and I only exchanged the occasional message with Jenny. Uncle Steve studied with me every afternoon after his appointments.“Amber,” I turned
“We’re back,”Jenny said calmly. A few of the girls squealed in surprise.“I’m going for a swim,”my girl said.”This bug spray is giving me a headache.”She laughed.
Just as planned, once it was dark enough that only our silhouettes were visible, the guys quietly slipped away from behind the chatting girls.Paul,”Jenny called back,”are we far?”
