Chapter 4

Author: Andrea North
After some thought, Seraphine quickly followed Jim into the restaurant. She saw him head to a private room upstairs, and she saw Clifford open the door for him.

Jim was Andrea's archenemy, and Andrea's health had deteriorated after being poisoned. The culprit had never been found. Later, Andrea had gotten various other symptoms after being hospitalized, ultimately dying of a heart attack after being provoked by Clarissa's messages.

Seraphine kept her footsteps light as she approached the private room. It was past the peak hour for meals, so not many of the private rooms were occupied. The one beside Clifford's was empty, so she headed inside. She'd eaten at that restaurant before and knew that the soundproofing for the private rooms was shoddy.

After heading inside the room, she shut the door softly and pressed her ear to the wall to eavesdrop on the conversation next door.

"Mr. Johansen, the human experiments are going well. Once your new product hits the market, we can follow up with a second one soon. Johansen Group will become one of the biggest names in the industry," Jim said. He sounded confident and excited.

Clifford laughed. "It's precisely because I admired your talent that I chose to work with you, Professor Horne. I know your human experiments have been going smoothly. Once my new product is launched, yours will come soon. Let's get ready to make billions of dollars together!"

"Thank you, Mr. Johansen. You have to make sure Professor Lodge is dealt with, though. Human experimentation is illegal, and that old bat has always had her guard up against me. You'll be dead meat if she finds out."

Seraphine was stunned upon hearing Jim's words. Clifford was working together with him on illegal experiments!

"She's nothing to worry about. She and Seraphine only have each other, so they can't cause much trouble. Besides, I've already dumped Seraphine. Feel free to do whatever you need to," Clifford said.

Hearing his familiar voice made Seraphine's heart clench in shock and fury. She hadn't slept well, and her vision now swam with darkness. She couldn't help thinking Clifford was being so foolish. With his current status and net worth, why would he stoop as low as getting involved in illegal human experimentation?

"I'm glad you're aware of the stakes, Mr. Johansen. Let me congratulate you in advance on the success of your new product launch," Jim said.

Inside the private room next door, Clifford raised an eyebrow, looking confident and proud. He said, "I don't want anyone to disrupt the product launch. Seraphine is Professor Lodge's daughter, so I hope you can get someone to take her out somewhere on that day."

Jim smiled knowingly.

Seraphine had no idea how she had left the restaurant. All she knew was that Clifford's new product couldn't hit the market successfully, not without the final piece of the technology that required her and Andrea to work together to complete. Yet Andrea was no longer alive.

Clifford knew nothing about Seraphine's life. They'd been together for five years, but it was only now that she realized how half-heartedly he'd always treated her. She'd been blinded by love, and she'd lived in a fantasy all this while, comforting herself under the illusion of his feelings for her.

She pulled out her phone and checked the date. Clifford's new product launch was in five days, and she knew it wouldn't work out.

Early the following day, Seraphine called Clifford, wanting to discuss the divorce.

The phone rang a few times before Clarissa answered, sounding bleary when she fired, "Why are you calling so early in the morning, you pathetic woman? Are you that desperate to be with Clifford? He's still asleep—he went wild with me too many times last night."

Her words were like a slap to Seraphine's face. It seemed they only thought of her genuine care and devotion as groveling.

"I'm not interested in a scumbag like Clifford, Clarissa. I just want to talk to him about finalizing the divorce. You'll be known as the other woman for as long as we remain married," Seraphine said.

Clarissa laughed mockingly. "You still don't get it, do you? You've been the other woman this whole time!"

Clarissa was visibly tense, her fists balled up tightly. She couldn't exactly admit that Seraphine had attacked her because she had dug up Andrea's grave. After all, she had simply acted out of anger. She was also troubled with nightmares last night. Whenever she closed her eyes, it felt like a pair of eyes was watching her from outside and inside her dream."I mean, what else could it be? She's jealous that you're still in love with me. With us flaunting our relationship lately, she couldn't stand it. She saw me downstairs, got into a fight with me, and even grabbed my neck. It still hurts, by the way."Clifford furrowed his brows as he looked at her, his eyes burning with so much intensity that she dared not meet his eyes.Seeing her guilty and uneasy, he couldn't help but admit that maybe Seraphine had a point. Maybe he really was just Clarissa's cash cow."If what you're saying is true, I wouldn't have spent all that time looking for her," he answered.Clifford knew Clarissa

When Aiden answered Clarissa's call, he was immediately blasted by her voice. "Mr. Fisher, did I tell you to take it down? I don't think so! I've given you tons of money, and this isn't how you should handle things!"Aiden almost cried. He couldn't afford to anger either side, and he simply wanted to live and enjoy his wealth. Couldn't they leave him out of this? His voice trembled with desperation. "Mrs. Johansen, it wasn't my choice to take it down. I'm telling you—my life was just being threatened! I've returned your money, so please, find someone else for this job. I can't do it anymore.""Wait. Who threatened you?" a surprised Clarissa asked.Aiden sighed in frustration. If he knew, he would've gone straight after them, and they wouldn't be having this conversation now."I don't know, and I don't care about your rich-people battles anymore. Just leave us, ordinary folks, out of it, please," he said, then immediately hung up.Clarissa narrowed her eyes at the disconnected cal

Ultimately, Seraphine didn't take the online clarification route. Instead, she anonymously sent a video to the owner of Sunnest Media, Aiden Fisher. Her computer skills came directly from Andrea, a top-tier expert. There was nothing Seraphine couldn't do if she wanted to.Her independence, composure, and modesty had all been taught by her mother. People thought she was a good girl, but really, she simply had an obsession with knowledge and technology."Remove the hot topic, or this video goes straight to your wife's email," she wrote. At Sunnest Media, Aiden had just gotten off the phone with Clarissa. She had told him to keep the trending topic pinned on top to ensure Seraphine defended her homewrecker label. However, barely a second after he hung up, he received an anonymous threat and video evidence of his infidelity. His mind froze.Who was this? Where did they get this footage? If this leaked, he would be utterly ruined!"What the hell? Why is there a video of it? Who on ea

Tears shimmered in Seraphine's eyes. "I mean what I said. I want your entire family to pay for what you did. That's the price for desecrating my mother's grave."The fury rolling off her was overwhelming. She had never been this hostile before.Clarissa was genuinely startled by the sheer menace in her, but Seraphine didn't spare her another glance. She turned and walked away.Clarissa coughed hard, feeling her throat burning. She shouted at the retreating figure, "You've got nothing on me! Who said you could accuse and threaten me like that?"Coldly, Seraphine snapped her head back at her. "You really believe I've got nothing on you? If I choose to expose you, you'll only meet your demise quicker."Clarissa felt her stomach twist. When she finally caught her breath, she muttered weakly, "If you had any proof, you would've sent me to jail already."A faint, chilling smile danced on Seraphine's lips. She couldn't believe Clarissa's audacity. "Oh, you're definitely going to prison.

Seraphine scoffed. "He's more than a nutcase. Back then, I took care of everything for him, so he convinced himself I was helplessly in love with him. After I left, and there was no one catering to him, he got uncomfortable."He only knows how to take, and the minute you stop obeying, you become this unforgivable villain in his story."That was the real reason Clifford wanted to go after her. He wanted her to love him the way she used to, worshipping him so he could feel superior and accomplished.Aria snorted. "All those years of hardship didn't soften him—they sharpened him into something worse. Ugh! Out of all the people in the world, we somehow got entangled with them. I guess that's our karma."Seraphine blinked, then laughed. "Why drag karma into this? We're the good ones. Shouldn't karma be reserved for the bad guys?"Aria patted her shoulder. "What's not to understand? Look at what he's put you through."Seraphine didn't reply to that. She had to admit Aria was right. T

Seraphine shook her head, watching Aria practically vibrating with gossip.Seraphine wasn't like that. She had always been the quiet, well-behaved type. As Andrea was the calm, silent sort, she had grown up the same way. She liked studying alone and zoning out alone. It wasn't that she hated socializing. She just never needed it.She leaned against the couch, looking lazy and relaxed, and asked, "Aria, isn't it time for you to reflect on why you're still single?"Aria froze, her voice trembling. "Why?"Seraphine laughed. "'Cause you're too busy being nosy."Truly, she had zero interest in hearing another word about Clarissa and Clifford's arguments.Aria was speechless, though she later chuckled with glimmering eyes. "I'm not as single as you think. I did have a boyfriend before…"Her voice trailed off as she lowered her gaze, took a slow breath, and then forced a faint smile back at Seraphine.Seraphine caught the flash of pain in her eyes, the kind she couldn't hide fast eno
