Chapter 5

Author: Andrea North
Seraphine didn't get the chance to ask what Clarissa meant before the latter abruptly hung up. That infuriated Seraphine, and she growled, "What a bitch!"

She had to make sure she and Clifford had a clean break. He wasn't worthy of her love! She gritted her teeth, her face turning slightly red from her anger.

After getting dressed, she saw that Lorraine had texted her to invite her out for lunch. She knew the latter was just worried about her being down in the dumps if she were alone and wanted to ask her out to lift her spirits.

Seraphine suddenly felt relieved that she no longer had to wake up early to cook and clean for Clifford. She could even sleep in if she wanted. She decided to love herself more in the future.

She headed to the bathroom to wash up. As she did so, she admired her reflection in the mirror, thinking that it was Clifford's loss to have missed out on someone as beautiful as her. He was unworthy of her!

After freshening up, she put on some light makeup. Once she and Lorraine ate, she planned to investigate Clifford's illegal human experiments. When the time came for his new product launch, she would be ready with a blow that he would never see coming.

Clifford had bought a villa for Clarissa. They'd lived there together since he'd proposed, practically joined at the hip. Their days were sweet and filled with affection.

Clarissa was Clifford's unattainable dream from the past. Now that she'd accepted his proposal, he treasured her all the more.

After getting up one morning, Clifford felt a dull ache in his stomach. He headed to the kitchen to find it bare. His expression darkened at that.

If Seraphine were around, she would've gotten up hours ago to prepare something nutritious for his breakfast, making sure that it would soothe his stomach. But Clarissa…

He pushed that thought out of his mind—he couldn't bear to have Clarissa do housework anyway. He would hire a housekeeper the very next day.

"Clifford, you're up! Seraphine called you earlier to threaten you into finalizing the divorce." Clarissa ran to him happily and clung to him, completely ignoring the paleness of his face.

She continued, "Do you think she'll lose her mind when she finds out you've lied to her about everything? I can't wait to see how upset she'll be!"

She had to use this to destroy Seraphine's reputation. On the day of Clifford's product launch, she would make everyone know that she was the woman who had his heart. When the time came, the Johansen family would have to accept her, whether they wanted to or not.

Clifford rubbed her head affectionately. "Alright, that's enough. The new product launch is in a few days. I'll take you home to meet my dad once the product successfully hits the market."

He didn't dare head home just yet. His father, Stephen Johansen, was furious about the proposal. But what could Clifford do? He loved Clarissa, and Seraphine had never been anything more than a stand-in for her.

His stomach throbbed dully, and his face became even paler. He felt horrible. "Clary, let's go out for breakfast. I'll head to work once we've eaten, and you can go shopping with Chels. Buy whatever you want."

Clarissa was delighted by that. She loved how generous Clifford was with his money. "Great! I've recently fallen in love with this one bag—I'll buy it today!"

"Alright." Clifford couldn't help feeling a little disappointed. Couldn't she tell he wasn't well? Seraphine would've noticed at the slightest frown.

He realized he was thinking about Seraphine again and forced himself not to. She'd cared for him for five years—he just wasn't used to her suddenly being gone.

Clifford changed and took Clarissa to a breakfast place where he often ate. Coincidentally enough, he saw Seraphine lining up as soon as he entered the restaurant.

He was taken aback, and his stomach twisted painfully. That, and the anger of running into Seraphine again, made his gaze turn murderous. He stormed over to her and snapped, "Why do you refuse to leave me alone, Seraphine?"

Clarissa was visibly tense, her fists balled up tightly. She couldn't exactly admit that Seraphine had attacked her because she had dug up Andrea's grave. After all, she had simply acted out of anger. She was also troubled with nightmares last night. Whenever she closed her eyes, it felt like a pair of eyes was watching her from outside and inside her dream."I mean, what else could it be? She's jealous that you're still in love with me. With us flaunting our relationship lately, she couldn't stand it. She saw me downstairs, got into a fight with me, and even grabbed my neck. It still hurts, by the way."Clifford furrowed his brows as he looked at her, his eyes burning with so much intensity that she dared not meet his eyes.Seeing her guilty and uneasy, he couldn't help but admit that maybe Seraphine had a point. Maybe he really was just Clarissa's cash cow."If what you're saying is true, I wouldn't have spent all that time looking for her," he answered.Clifford knew Clarissa

When Aiden answered Clarissa's call, he was immediately blasted by her voice. "Mr. Fisher, did I tell you to take it down? I don't think so! I've given you tons of money, and this isn't how you should handle things!"Aiden almost cried. He couldn't afford to anger either side, and he simply wanted to live and enjoy his wealth. Couldn't they leave him out of this? His voice trembled with desperation. "Mrs. Johansen, it wasn't my choice to take it down. I'm telling you—my life was just being threatened! I've returned your money, so please, find someone else for this job. I can't do it anymore.""Wait. Who threatened you?" a surprised Clarissa asked.Aiden sighed in frustration. If he knew, he would've gone straight after them, and they wouldn't be having this conversation now."I don't know, and I don't care about your rich-people battles anymore. Just leave us, ordinary folks, out of it, please," he said, then immediately hung up.Clarissa narrowed her eyes at the disconnected cal

Ultimately, Seraphine didn't take the online clarification route. Instead, she anonymously sent a video to the owner of Sunnest Media, Aiden Fisher. Her computer skills came directly from Andrea, a top-tier expert. There was nothing Seraphine couldn't do if she wanted to.Her independence, composure, and modesty had all been taught by her mother. People thought she was a good girl, but really, she simply had an obsession with knowledge and technology."Remove the hot topic, or this video goes straight to your wife's email," she wrote. At Sunnest Media, Aiden had just gotten off the phone with Clarissa. She had told him to keep the trending topic pinned on top to ensure Seraphine defended her homewrecker label. However, barely a second after he hung up, he received an anonymous threat and video evidence of his infidelity. His mind froze.Who was this? Where did they get this footage? If this leaked, he would be utterly ruined!"What the hell? Why is there a video of it? Who on ea

Tears shimmered in Seraphine's eyes. "I mean what I said. I want your entire family to pay for what you did. That's the price for desecrating my mother's grave."The fury rolling off her was overwhelming. She had never been this hostile before.Clarissa was genuinely startled by the sheer menace in her, but Seraphine didn't spare her another glance. She turned and walked away.Clarissa coughed hard, feeling her throat burning. She shouted at the retreating figure, "You've got nothing on me! Who said you could accuse and threaten me like that?"Coldly, Seraphine snapped her head back at her. "You really believe I've got nothing on you? If I choose to expose you, you'll only meet your demise quicker."Clarissa felt her stomach twist. When she finally caught her breath, she muttered weakly, "If you had any proof, you would've sent me to jail already."A faint, chilling smile danced on Seraphine's lips. She couldn't believe Clarissa's audacity. "Oh, you're definitely going to prison.

Seraphine scoffed. "He's more than a nutcase. Back then, I took care of everything for him, so he convinced himself I was helplessly in love with him. After I left, and there was no one catering to him, he got uncomfortable."He only knows how to take, and the minute you stop obeying, you become this unforgivable villain in his story."That was the real reason Clifford wanted to go after her. He wanted her to love him the way she used to, worshipping him so he could feel superior and accomplished.Aria snorted. "All those years of hardship didn't soften him—they sharpened him into something worse. Ugh! Out of all the people in the world, we somehow got entangled with them. I guess that's our karma."Seraphine blinked, then laughed. "Why drag karma into this? We're the good ones. Shouldn't karma be reserved for the bad guys?"Aria patted her shoulder. "What's not to understand? Look at what he's put you through."Seraphine didn't reply to that. She had to admit Aria was right. T

Seraphine shook her head, watching Aria practically vibrating with gossip.Seraphine wasn't like that. She had always been the quiet, well-behaved type. As Andrea was the calm, silent sort, she had grown up the same way. She liked studying alone and zoning out alone. It wasn't that she hated socializing. She just never needed it.She leaned against the couch, looking lazy and relaxed, and asked, "Aria, isn't it time for you to reflect on why you're still single?"Aria froze, her voice trembling. "Why?"Seraphine laughed. "'Cause you're too busy being nosy."Truly, she had zero interest in hearing another word about Clarissa and Clifford's arguments.Aria was speechless, though she later chuckled with glimmering eyes. "I'm not as single as you think. I did have a boyfriend before…"Her voice trailed off as she lowered her gaze, took a slow breath, and then forced a faint smile back at Seraphine.Seraphine caught the flash of pain in her eyes, the kind she couldn't hide fast eno
