Chapter 3

Author: Andrea North
"Hey, old bat. Clifford is going to propose to me today, you know? Let me show you how romantic the place looks. I heard he only registered his marriage with your daughter without even giving her a wedding ring. Just so you know, your daughter is just a stand-in for me. As for you… You're just his stepping stone.

"Once you're dead, I'll chase Seraphine out of his life! I do have to thank you for one thing, though—that the fruits of your labor are going to bring me wealth and power."

The messages were followed by photos of Clifford and Clarissa holding each other lovingly. There were even explicit videos of them in bed together.

Rage ignited in Seraphine's eyes like wildfire. So, Andrea had died of a heart attack after being provoked by the photos and messages Clarissa had sent her. She'd even taunted Andrea so blatantly!

She burst into heartwrenching sobs, unable to keep her grief at bay. Her heart twisted painfully. She was in agony. She wouldn't let any of the people who'd caused Andrea's death off the hook!

Seraphine cried for a long time before calming down. She dried her tears, swearing to avenge Andrea and leaving unscathed.

Hatred filled her eyes. Clifford had only gotten the chance to return to the Johansen family because of the neural chip for coma patients that Andrea had developed. He was an illegitimate son, yet he'd now been given the right to manage Johansen Group. It was all thanks to Andrea's technology.

Seraphine would make him end up in the dump from which he'd crawled out!

She staggered out of the hospital, feeling distraught. Tears brimmed in her eyes again as she looked up at the cloudless sky. It was her blind love and devotion that had ultimately led to Andrea's death.

She wandered along the streets before ending up at a restaurant that she often visited. She rubbed her rumbling stomach, figuring she would have dinner before heading home. Lorraine was busy with work and wouldn't have time to eat with her anyway.

Seraphine headed into the restaurant, and a waiter came to take her order. She ordered a few dishes and waited for them to be served. In the meantime, she stared out the window blankly, feeling so weighed down by sorrow that it was hard to breathe.

When the food was served, she ate quietly. Suddenly, she was interrupted by a familiar, mocking voice.

"What are you doing here, Seraphine? Didn't I tell you not to show your face in front of me after taking the money? Don't you have any sense of dignity?"

Seraphine stopped eating and looked up to see Clifford and Clarissa. After everything that had happened, she could only see Clifford's twisted and grotesque side.

He appraised her smugly, pleased by the redness of her eyes. It seemed she'd cried for a long time, and he pompously thought it was because of him. Still, he'd lost his bet. She hadn't sought him out all day, and he was upset over losing tens of millions of dollars.

Seraphine glanced at him indifferently before fixing her gaze on Clarissa. The sight of her face made Seraphine want to puke—she was the reason Andrea had died of a heart attack. She wanted to rip Clarissa to shreds, but she knew she didn't stand a chance of taking Clifford down at the moment.

She said coolly, "This is a restaurant, Mr. Johansen. I came first, and I had no idea you guys were coming. And stop being so full of yourself. What makes you think I'd still want to look at your ugly mug, you scumbag?"

Seraphine knew some people had an innate, irrepressible desire—the firm belief that everyone had to revolve around them. Clifford was one of those people.

Meanwhile, Clarissa was simmering. Clifford hadn't been in the best of moods that day, and it was all because of Seraphine. It was likely he'd made room in his heart for Seraphine—they'd spent five years together, after all. That was enough time for one to become attached to an animal, let alone a human.

"You took 200 million dollars from Clifford, Seraphine. Doesn't that weigh down your conscience? And have you shown up here in hopes of creating an accidental encounter so you can make him give you more money?" Clarissa asked sharply.

That amused Seraphine. Why would the money weigh down her conscience?

"Why would I feel guilty? He's only where he is now because my mother invested in him. That makes us something like business partners, right? It's my right to get the money, and my conscience is clear about taking it."

She turned to Clifford. "Let's finalize the divorce when you're free, Mr. Johansen. You can make things official with your mistress."

She no longer had an appetite, so she stood up and left.

Behind her, Clarissa screamed, "I'm not a mistress, Seraphine!"

Clifford caressed her head gently and said soothingly, "That's right. You're not a mistress, Clary. Seraphine is."

Seraphine faltered at his words. So, he only saw her as the other woman? She suppressed her heartache as she strode out of the restaurant. This wasn't the right time to strike. She had to wait until Clifford's company's new product launch. That would be when the real showdown happened.

Outside the restaurant, Seraphine stood by the roadside to hail a cab. Suddenly, she saw Jim Horne, one of Andrea's research collaborators, get out of a car and stride into the restaurant.

She knew Jim and Andrea had never gotten along. Thinking about how Andrea had been poisoned and how Clifford was also at the restaurant, a terrifying guess formed in her mind.

Clarissa was visibly tense, her fists balled up tightly. She couldn't exactly admit that Seraphine had attacked her because she had dug up Andrea's grave. After all, she had simply acted out of anger. She was also troubled with nightmares last night. Whenever she closed her eyes, it felt like a pair of eyes was watching her from outside and inside her dream."I mean, what else could it be? She's jealous that you're still in love with me. With us flaunting our relationship lately, she couldn't stand it. She saw me downstairs, got into a fight with me, and even grabbed my neck. It still hurts, by the way."Clifford furrowed his brows as he looked at her, his eyes burning with so much intensity that she dared not meet his eyes.Seeing her guilty and uneasy, he couldn't help but admit that maybe Seraphine had a point. Maybe he really was just Clarissa's cash cow."If what you're saying is true, I wouldn't have spent all that time looking for her," he answered.Clifford knew Clarissa

When Aiden answered Clarissa's call, he was immediately blasted by her voice. "Mr. Fisher, did I tell you to take it down? I don't think so! I've given you tons of money, and this isn't how you should handle things!"Aiden almost cried. He couldn't afford to anger either side, and he simply wanted to live and enjoy his wealth. Couldn't they leave him out of this? His voice trembled with desperation. "Mrs. Johansen, it wasn't my choice to take it down. I'm telling you—my life was just being threatened! I've returned your money, so please, find someone else for this job. I can't do it anymore.""Wait. Who threatened you?" a surprised Clarissa asked.Aiden sighed in frustration. If he knew, he would've gone straight after them, and they wouldn't be having this conversation now."I don't know, and I don't care about your rich-people battles anymore. Just leave us, ordinary folks, out of it, please," he said, then immediately hung up.Clarissa narrowed her eyes at the disconnected cal

Ultimately, Seraphine didn't take the online clarification route. Instead, she anonymously sent a video to the owner of Sunnest Media, Aiden Fisher. Her computer skills came directly from Andrea, a top-tier expert. There was nothing Seraphine couldn't do if she wanted to.Her independence, composure, and modesty had all been taught by her mother. People thought she was a good girl, but really, she simply had an obsession with knowledge and technology."Remove the hot topic, or this video goes straight to your wife's email," she wrote. At Sunnest Media, Aiden had just gotten off the phone with Clarissa. She had told him to keep the trending topic pinned on top to ensure Seraphine defended her homewrecker label. However, barely a second after he hung up, he received an anonymous threat and video evidence of his infidelity. His mind froze.Who was this? Where did they get this footage? If this leaked, he would be utterly ruined!"What the hell? Why is there a video of it? Who on ea

Tears shimmered in Seraphine's eyes. "I mean what I said. I want your entire family to pay for what you did. That's the price for desecrating my mother's grave."The fury rolling off her was overwhelming. She had never been this hostile before.Clarissa was genuinely startled by the sheer menace in her, but Seraphine didn't spare her another glance. She turned and walked away.Clarissa coughed hard, feeling her throat burning. She shouted at the retreating figure, "You've got nothing on me! Who said you could accuse and threaten me like that?"Coldly, Seraphine snapped her head back at her. "You really believe I've got nothing on you? If I choose to expose you, you'll only meet your demise quicker."Clarissa felt her stomach twist. When she finally caught her breath, she muttered weakly, "If you had any proof, you would've sent me to jail already."A faint, chilling smile danced on Seraphine's lips. She couldn't believe Clarissa's audacity. "Oh, you're definitely going to prison.

Seraphine scoffed. "He's more than a nutcase. Back then, I took care of everything for him, so he convinced himself I was helplessly in love with him. After I left, and there was no one catering to him, he got uncomfortable."He only knows how to take, and the minute you stop obeying, you become this unforgivable villain in his story."That was the real reason Clifford wanted to go after her. He wanted her to love him the way she used to, worshipping him so he could feel superior and accomplished.Aria snorted. "All those years of hardship didn't soften him—they sharpened him into something worse. Ugh! Out of all the people in the world, we somehow got entangled with them. I guess that's our karma."Seraphine blinked, then laughed. "Why drag karma into this? We're the good ones. Shouldn't karma be reserved for the bad guys?"Aria patted her shoulder. "What's not to understand? Look at what he's put you through."Seraphine didn't reply to that. She had to admit Aria was right. T

  • Karma Is My Name   Chapter 465

Seraphine shook her head, watching Aria practically vibrating with gossip.Seraphine wasn't like that. She had always been the quiet, well-behaved type. As Andrea was the calm, silent sort, she had grown up the same way. She liked studying alone and zoning out alone. It wasn't that she hated socializing. She just never needed it.She leaned against the couch, looking lazy and relaxed, and asked, "Aria, isn't it time for you to reflect on why you're still single?"Aria froze, her voice trembling. "Why?"Seraphine laughed. "'Cause you're too busy being nosy."Truly, she had zero interest in hearing another word about Clarissa and Clifford's arguments.Aria was speechless, though she later chuckled with glimmering eyes. "I'm not as single as you think. I did have a boyfriend before…"Her voice trailed off as she lowered her gaze, took a slow breath, and then forced a faint smile back at Seraphine.Seraphine caught the flash of pain in her eyes, the kind she couldn't hide fast eno
