EVELYN
I knew men like him, men who had everything at their disposal and would still demand for more. Handsome, young, intelligent and wealthy—no better recipe for making arrogant twats.
He was born in wealth, pampered from birth and groomed to be the heartless CEO he was today. He never lacked anything, from love to respect, to fame—he had everything and more.
One didn't even have to dig deep to know pretty much everything about Nolan Walter. There was always so much hype around Nolan that it never failed to make me cringe whenever I heard people talk about the ‘young golden business mogul’.
I wasn't raised that way. My parents had always been wealthy but they didn't exactly make things easy on me. I had always been told that I had to be more this, I had to be more that.
Yeah, Nolan and I both had the responsibility of running our parents' respective businesses. But unlike Nolan, I didn't have it thrown at me like a toy I could pick whenever I liked. Whether it sounded absurd or not, I had to prove myself to my parents. I had to fight for it.
On that note, there was no way on this bloody earth I would allow Nolan Walter get the win here. Not this time.
“Mr Rowland, you came to us first and I assure you that there couldn't be a better decision," Nolan said, maintaining eye contact with David.
“Of course there is a better decision, David, and that's going with Lotte Corps." I said, going further to tell him why Lotte Corps was the better choice. For perhaps, the eleventh million time.
It wasn't easy convincing David. It wasn't just because Nolan couldn't allow me to make two sentences without cutting in. The issue was that both Lotte Corps and Walter Corporation would offer similar services, and David would be fine either way. Well, I couldn't possibly tell him that.
“Mr Walter, I do not wish to appear boastful, but it's well known that my works and accolades are unmatched. When I get into a project, it is always a success. Always." Nolan stated.
Nolan kept speaking and it began to become clear that the tables were turning in Nolan's favour. David, of course, had a thing for women but like every businessman, business was always the top priority.
If he got convinced that Walter Corporation was better for him, he would go for it. As much as I loved to praise my networking skills, it was nothing close to Nolan's. Every word the man said was smooth, calm and witty. It was only a matter of time before David went Nolan's way. And like I said, that wasn't going to happen this time. I won't allow it!
I was desperate now. Like the cliche says, desperate times call for desperate measures.
“Mr Rowland, as I have said before, Lotte Corps has more to offer you but I understand if you don't feel a woman can offer a good deal." I said, deliberately making my usually clear voice tremble as I spoke.
No one expected that from me. Hell, I didn't expect it either.
“It is nothing of that sort, I only think Walter. . .”
I cut in. “It is okay, I have lived my whole life knowing I would always be seen as inferior to men, it's the cross we carry as women”
Then I broke into a sob. Jeez, I didn't know my acting skills were this good.
Nolan chuckled. “This is ridiculous.”
“Oh, I'm sorry I don't mean to be a cry baby, my emotions seemed to have imploded." I stood, pretending I didn't know David would call me back. “I will be on my way now, nice having dinner with you.”
“Miss Bennett, I have a very firm stance against discrimination of any sort and I will never be a part of it. As proof of my words, I hand over the deal to Lotte Corps."
Wait, was this really happening?
His words were sweeter than music to my ears. Even sweeter, was the look of disappointment on the face of the cute devil who almost stole the deal from me.
“Mr Rowland, you can't be serious, you do know you are missing a lot by not going with Walter Corp."
David, clearly, had made up his mind. “This doesn't mean I won't work with your company in the future, but I have decided to go with Lotte Corp this time."
Luckily, before Nolan could utter another word, David's phone rang.
“I'm sorry I have to leave, I will leave you two now." David said, leaving the table and then the restaurant.
For a minute or two, neither of us said a word. I enjoyed the silence, my mind still finding it difficult to believe that I just cut a major deal, winning it over Nolan Walter. Winning the deal was great on its own but that I got it right in the presence of Nolan, added spice to it.
When Nolan spoke, he almost took away the happiness that bubbled tempestuously in me.
“At the party, I told you that you were just sex on legs with nothing going on in your head, but now I know there is one more thing you are."
“What is that?" I asked, half expecting him to say something rude.
“Pathetic. You are pathetic.” Nolan shook his head as he uttered every word he spoke, looking at me in a way I didn't appreciate at all.
“Talk about a sore loser." I shot at him.
He laughed, digging his hands into his thick hair. “Crying? You snuck into an invite-only party, you tried to seduce a man to get your way with him, and now crying? Is there anything beneath you at all?"
I picked my handbag and stood. “Have a nice evening."
I was barely six feet away before I heard him yell out a question.
“What will you do when next you have to compete to cut a deal? Shed some more tears?" He asked, knowing I was offended already.
Without turning, I said, “whatever the hell I have to.”
EVELYNI felt a shiver run through my spine as Nolan placed his hand on my shoulder, and stroking my collarbone only made it worse. I stared into his bright blue orbs feeling unable to move. What are you doing Evelyn? You should be kicking his ass for touching you right now. I felt trapped in the spot I was and my eyes flickered to his lips as he moved closer to me. I gulped nervously and before I could blink, he pressed his lips against mine. I tried not to show that it affected me, but I ended up moaning and I moved my hips against his. It wasn't sloppy or overly wet, it was unexpectedly pleasant and I felt a tugging of desire in my lower belly. What am I doing Eve?! I need to stop this. I wanted to protest but ended up giving in again. I didn't expect it when Nolan placed his hand between my thighs, causing me to moan. I have to stop this. "Mm...Nolan," I mumbled as his lips traveled to my shoulders and he began to push down the straps of my dress. "Evelyn, Evelyn?"I blinked,
NOLANEvelyn didn't move as I had my hand on her shoulder, my thumb lightly stroking her collarbone. Her eyes were fixated on mine. They were missing their usual coolness. Was she warming up to me?I sure hope so.I had planned only to tease her. Pretend to kiss her, then move away, leaving her hungry for more. Then I walk away like a champion, so she felt like a fool. But in the end, I lost control of myself. She flinched but didn't push me away when our lips fused. When my tongue met hers, she moaned against my mouth, then pressed her hips against mine. She made noise as if to complain but kept kissing me. She jerked a little when I placed my hand between her thighs but didn't try to stop me. She was being good, letting me do what I wanted."Mm...Nolan," she mumbled against my lips and looked at me half-lidded.My lips traveled to her shoulders, then to her collarbone. I pushed the straps of her dress halfway down, which seemed to break her out of her trance. "St...stop!" Evelyn cri
EVELYNNolan.I could still taste him in my mouth. The kiss was surprisingly pleasant and I am angry at myself for not hating it fully. Why did I kiss him back? I should've kicked him to the curbs and let him taste my wrath but instead, I let him claim my mouth. Maybe I was more drunk than I thought I was. Oh well, I should just forget about it. One week later, my family arranged a picnic like they do every year around this time. Most of the time, it's at the lake where they bought a beach house. It wasn't anything formal. Just me, my parents and some close family members. Which means Jessica would be there and I'd have the chance to interrogate her about Nolan. What the fuck was she thinking hanging out with that douche?Whatever, there was no point in regretting things now. In the morning, I put on my bathing suit under my summer dress and headed to the lake."Evelyn! Sweetheart. Glad you are here. You can help me with the set up," my chirped as I walked toward the picnic table.
NOLAN It was a little hard to pull away from her since she held onto my shoulder as we kissed. With the way we stood, any onlooker would think Evelyn was the one who initiated the kiss. For some reason I couldn't explain, Robbie asking Eve out in my presence had pissed the fuck out of me. Because of that, I decided to act like a bad boy to her only to see how she would react. When I kissed Evelyn, my mind went mostly blank, and all I could think of was her. I could feel her breath on my face as our tongues fought for dominance. Amidst everything, what surprised me the most was that Evelyn kissed me back. The funniest thing was that I hadn't actually planned on kissing Evelyn today. Or anytime in the future. My hands left her waist and went a little lower. Well, not for long, because Evelyn pushed me away and turned her face away from me. “I can't breathe,” Eve said, drying her lips with the back of her palm.It felt wrong that the kiss didn't last long. Now that the kiss was over
EVELYNNolan somehow convinced us to go along with his plan. I blame Robbie for that. But when I arrived at the place he suggested, I almost wanted to turn around and drive away.Of course that bastard picked this dump, I thought as I stared at the giant fluorescent sign that said, KARAOKE BAR in red. Inside was a large room that was dimly lit. Several disco lights were hanging from the ceiling. There was a DJ who had a table set up in the corner. I guess he was in charge of the music. I saw a couple singing duets. None of them were good singers, but they didn't seem to care, and neither did everyone else all around us. Most of the people were most likely too drunk to care.I waited until we got a booth in the corner. Robbie excused himself to go to the restroom."What are we doing here? We are not some drunk college kids," I barked, so Nolan knew I was not happy with this."Ms. Bennett! I am shocked! I thought you were the kind of woman who liked to have fun, but I guess I was wrong.
EVELYN Oh, for Christ's sake. Why do I have to deal with this guy tonight? Tonight was supposed to be the night I got to woo Robbie so I would have a date by Christmas. Then, I could finally bring a guy home so my mom would stop nagging at me about not having a date. "Are you stalking me?" I snapped at Nolan, who had the audacity to laugh at my annoyance. "Don't flatter yourself, darling," he said. "Don't darling me, dingbat. Why are you here?" I asked. "Last time I checked, a restaurant is a public establishment. And important people such as myself are more than welcome around here." Nolan grinned. "Important? HAH!" I laughed mockingly. "Laugh at me if you must, Eve. But ask the owner. I am their top customer. What are you doing here?" Nolan asked. "None of your business," I sat back and sulked. He was about to ruin my date, I knew it. "Now, could you please go away? I am expecting my date to show up any moment now." To my utter shock, Nolan didn't make an effort to leave. I
