I stared at Asher and Mason in disbelief. Asher looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but here, and Mason looked like he was enjoying the situation.

It felt like I was the butt of someone's joke, because the universe sure has a fucked up way of being funny.

It seemed like all the decisions I made led me back to square zero, because Mason was somehow still entangled with my life. The air was filled with a thick tension before Mason finally spoke up.

“You're married to my cousin, Audrey?” Mason asked in disbelief and what I perceived to be jealousy.

“What did you just say to me? You cheated on me, Mason! We're broken up!”

“So you married my cousin to get back at me?” He shook his head in disbelief.

“When are you ever going to realize that my world doesn't revolve around you?” I asked exasperated. His selfish nature definitely increased and he still hasn't changed one bit.

“I'm supposed to believe that your sudden marriage to my cousin doesn't have anything to do with you getting back at me? Give me a fucking break Audrey.”

“Why would I want to get back at you, Mason?”

“I don't know, maybe because I fucked your best friend?” He smirked. He was clearly trying to get a rise out of me.

I stared at him in disbelief as my heart shattered into a million pieces over again. I tried to suppress the memories, but it seemed like it wanted to spill over today.

It seemed like the seals have become too weak and were threatening to break loose. I quickly pulled them together before they caused tears to fall. I chuckled bitterly and looked up at Mason.

“Well, it's clear I don't give a fuck about that anymore, isn't it?”

He stared at me like he could see right through my bullshit facade. “You sure about that?” He finally spoke up.

“Your ego is clearly blinding you.”

“Is it that? Or you just don't want to admit that you still have feelings for me?”

“Trust me, if I had a gun right now, a bullet would be lodged in your forehead. That's how much I give a fuck about you, Mason.” I retorted.

Mason looked like I punched him in the gut. He quickly recovered from my statement and turned to Asher.

“You're really going to let her speak to me like that?”

“Or what? To hell with you and your fucking ego, Mason.” I said before Asher could respond.

He chuckled. I couldn't believe the clown. He was turning my life upside down, and he was laughing about it. He had the nerves to sit here in my kitchen and make it look like I still had feelings for him?

To make it look like my life was all about his?

“Is something fucking funny?” I asked him.

“I'm just saying, Audrey, we used to love each other. I know I cheated, it was only a flimsy mistake and we could have worked it out-”

“Can you even listen to yourself Mason?” I was so fed up. How could someone be so oblivious of situation around him? I rubbed my temples because it was clear a migraine had started to form.

“I don't understand yo-”

“I'm a married woman!” I yelled at the top of my lungs.

“Alright, that's enough. Mason, I'm going to ask you to leave.” Asher looked like he wanted to punch the daylights out of Mason.

“What? Are you serious right now, Ash?” Mason looked at Asher like he just betrayed him.

“You come into my house, disrespecting me and my wife, and act innocent when I ask you to leave? That's some bullshit Mason.”

“So, you're going to let some bitch come in-between us as a family-”

“Let that be the fucking last time, you ever refer to my wife as that. Now, leave my fucking house, Mason.” Asher said so calmly, but from the veins popping on his forehead, I knew he was minutes away from slamming Mason’s head on the counter.

Mason looked between the both of us. It was clear on our faces that he was no longer welcome, and needed to leave.

He chuckled as he stood up and picked up his phone from the table. He stopped, stared at me and I saw every bit of hatred and sinister infatuation in his eyes. My heart thudded behind my ribs.

“This will not be the last time you both will hear of me, I promise you that.” He declared before finally leaving the house.

Mason's threat made shivers go down my spine, and I became filled with dread. I dated him once and I knew what he was capable of. And now he's most certainly angry that I'm married to his cousin.

Who knows what lengths he would go to get me back? Or exert revenge?

I turned to Asher and watched him massage his temples before finally turning to me.

“Go back upstairs, I'll tell the chef to bring you your breakfast.” He said and walked away.

I thought about communicating my worries to him and immediately brushed it aside. I was probably only being paranoid. And, I and Asher weren't that close to communicate our worries anyways.

But throughout the day, the feeling of dread kept on returning, and it got even stronger. Something bad was coming, and I knew it.

Third person POV.The morning after Audrey's nightmare was oddly quiet. The sunlight filtered through the curtains, but it felt colder than usual. Audrey stared at the text on her phone over and over again: “I warned him.” She wondered in gut-wrenching fear who exactly had sent her the message, and who was the “he” the message talked about. Did this have to do with her father? Has one of his shady business partners come hunting her down? She stared at the message until her vision blurred, trying to convince herself it was a mistake, a coincidence, heck–even a prank. But the trembling in her fingers and the invisible weight in her chest told her it wasn’t. Someone was watching. And maybe that someone knew. Knew everything about her, maybe even about the baby. Maybe the contract. Maybe everything. She deleted the message quickly, shoved the phone under her pillow, and curled up again, arms wrapped around herself as if they could keep her safe. Her heart pounded for hours until she h

Third person POV.Asher stirred from sleep earlier than usual. The dawn light hadn’t yet broken through the thick curtains of his bedroom, but he was already sitting upright, his mind curiously at ease for once. Last night’s dream was one he wished he wouldn't wake up from, it lingered in his memory and he didn't want it to leave. Audrey in his arms, the softness of her breath against his shirt, the taste of her lips. The ache in his chest had shifted into something warm, dangerous, and real, and he was willing to explore it. He pulled on a grey cashmere sweater and a pair of black slacks, his movements unusually light for a man who carried the weight of an empire on his shoulders.Downstairs, he found Audrey sipping a glass of orange juice, her oversized sweater barely managing to hide the curve of her growing belly. She looked up, surprised to see him so early.“Morning,” he said, voice lower than usual. He let his eyes sweep over her subtly as he walked into the open-plan kitche

Asher's POV. The city lights flickered beneath his bedroom windows as Asher stood still, his jaw locked and shoulders rigid. The text on his phone glowed ominously in the dim room. Madeline: We need to talk. You owe me that much. He didn't owe her anything. But the ghost of the past often knows where the cracks in the armor lie, and Madeline knew just where to press. She always had. Stunning, venomous, and dangerously persuasive—Madeline had been a drug he could never fully quit. Until Audrey. They came back from the birthday dinner and she softly excused herself, and left him alone in the living room. He has been quiet and lost in his thoughts on the drive back home. He knew she planned to slowly waltz into his life again, and he didn't understand why. Madeline made it quite clear the last time that she didn't want to deal with him any longer, so what changed? The sound of Audrey's soft footsteps padding down the hall brought him back to reality. Audrey. And while

Asher’s pov My ex and first love was back in town. I first met Madeline in the first formal event I ever attended. She was the first gorgeous woman I ever paid any attention to. It was also on that crisp evening that I bagged my first private jet sales. She was a supermodel, evident in her 6’3” height and a jawline that could cut diamonds. She was the typical mean girl, with cash to throw around and an attitude that was rotten. I didn't know what exactly drew me to her, but I needed the distraction. Plus, she was easy on the eyes. We hit it off immediately and started some type of ‘on and off’ relationship. Meaning, whenever she was in town, we would meet up and do all sort of things people in real relationships did. And then she would get a modelling gig and disappear for months after. It worked for me, I wasn't too keen on being committed to a woman and I wasn't ready to. I didn't ever let us be seen in public together–she always had paparazzi following her around–so we a

Audrey's POVIt's been weeks since the ‘Mason incident’, and things have been different. It wasn't very obvious, but I could tell it.Asher's been extra protective of me in more ways than one. He's employed a ton of maids around the house to ensure I didn't lift a finger. He personally assigned a security detail that followed me everywhere outside the house, be it the mall, or my pilates class. He's also amped up security around the mansion, which did nothing but amplify my anxiety. It seemed like he was preparing for some type of war, and it made me really anxious. It was really getting on my nerves, and I made up my mind to question him about it. Away from that, my life has been pretty bland since the marriage. It's been a vicious cycle of me waking up to breakfast by my bedside, going on lonely walks in the garden, blinking at the large TV in the living room, and occasional pilates classes.I missed my old life of freedom, I missed my friends and endless parties, I missed my socia
