Chapter Four

KIRA'S POV

Just like my prince charming had instructed, I started working at Elvis Hotel and Resorts. I must confess that the job demanded a lot from me. My time and energy was not mine any more. I spent most of my time at work. And for my boss, we soon became a bit closer than usual. Everyone wondered how I did it. Some suspected I used voodoo on the boss, but I couldn't care less. Other female coworkers envied me and I felt so proud about it.

One special day that redefined our relationship, it was raining heavily, so I had to stay back at the office. Those with cars left with colleagues they were closest with. Unfortunately, none of the friends I had made at the office had cars just like myself. Hence I was stuck, without even an umbrella to walk to the bus stop. A few of us stood outside, taking shade under the magnificent building.

" This is so messed up" I said to myself. I soon resolved to get myself a taxi even if I got drenched. Just when I entered the rain, I noticed something come above my head, and the rain suddenly stopped pouring on me. I looked up and saw my boss holding a blue umbrella over my head with a smile.

"Oh! Good evening sir!" I said, trying to pitch my voice a bit, so he could hear me amidst the heavy downpour.

"Yeah! Let's get into my car. I'll drop you off." He said taking my hand in his, not giving me a chance to object to his kind gesture.

He opened the door beside the driver's seat, and I got in. I wondered why he wasn't being driven by his driver on a day like this.

"So where do you live. He said as he got in, folding the wet umbrella and tossing it to the back seat.

"Clifford Avenue, the third house on Tiffany street. Don't worry sir, it's not a hard place to locate." I said with a smile. He stared at me for a while, and I saw his lip curl up a bit.

"I'm glad." He said, and soon we hit the road.

We drove in silence, and I enjoyed it still. There was just something about being around him. I loved his small talks, even down to his quiet. Everything about him seemed to appeal to me .

"Oh Kira, you can't fall for your boss. That's absurd" I thought, biting my lower lip. I saw him smirk from the corner of my eye.

"What's with him?" I thought.

"I see you are lost in some interesting thoughts. Can you let in on them?" He said still wearing that smirk.

" Is he teasing me right now?"I thought now feeling embarrassed, and for the first time, I felt like slapping that smirk off his handsome face.

"No it nothing. Just wondering what I'll eat when I get home." I lied.

"Oh I see. In that case, let's go somewhere to eat. My stomach has also been crying out for food." He joked, making me giggle.

"There'll be no need for that. My mom must be worried sick about me by now. Also, I have never had dinner without her." I said.

" Well, there's always a first time for everything. You should call her to let her know you are fine. I could even speak to her if you want." He said, shocking me to my marrows.

"Talk to her?! No. I'll.. I'll just call her." I said a bit nervously. I didn't want to tell him that mom was in the hospital and I needed to go home to freshen up, and rush to the hospital to have dinner with her. I wasn't about to tell him that I had to eat with my mom, because she always refused to have her dinner if I wasn't there having it with her. Not because I was ashamed of my mother's poor health, but I hate being pitied. My mom wasn't a sorry sickler, and I hate people making it seem so.

Just when I was about to make a fake call, pretending I was talking to her, my phone rang, and it was my mom's favorite nurse. In as much as I hated this situation, I couldn't ignore that call as it concerned the person I loved the most in the world.

"Hello." I answered.

"Hey Kira! Where are you? Your mom has been worried sick about you. Trust her not to eat anything without you." The nurse said rather frantically.

"Umm.. can I talk to her?" I said trying not to be so audible.

"What?"

"I said please give her the phone."

"Oh okay." She said and soon I heard my mom's voice. She sounded a bit low, and this made me worried.

"Mom what are you doing? You really need to stop this. Go have your dinner now and take your medications." I said with a shaky voice. I noticed, my boss look at me at intervals looking worried but I couldn't care less. My mom was all that mattered to me at this point.

"Kira, why are you taking so long to get here? Are you still at work?" She asked.

"Mom I am fine. I'll be with you shortly. Just go have something to eat."

"I can't eat anything without you. So get yourself here, and when I see you eating, then I'll eat."

I knew how stubborn my mom could be, but she was really getting on my last nerve.

"Can you stop this already! Do you know how worried I am about you, knowing you haven't had your medications by this time? It's already past 10pm and you are yet to take them." I said angrily, I didn't even know when a tear dropped.

"Scream all you want young lady, but I'll eat when I see you." She said and hung up.

"This woman is driving me nuts" I mumbled.

She annoyed me so much, making me totally forgot where I was.

"Here" My boss said startling me, as he handed me his handkerchief

"Shit! He saw me cry." I thought in dismay.

"It's okay. We all have something or someone that weakens us at some point." He said like he read my thoughts. I slowly took it from his hand, with my hand brushing against his. I could feel goosebumps on my skin.

"So.. if you don't mind me asking, where is your mom at the moment?" He asked. I could tell that he wasn't so sure I was comfortable answering that question, and this made me smile. He looked so cute.

"It's fine. She is at the hospital." I said cleaning my face with his sweet smelling hanky. There was no need hiding it anymore. He was just too smart for my liking.

"I see. Okay, I'll take you to her. What hospital is she in?" He said suddenly stopping the vehicle.
